More than just a job
![]() It's only business, nothing personal...at least, that's how it started. You were pegged as the right one for a job that involves this person; your task could be positive, such as protecting them with their consent or without it, guiding them from point a to point b, and the like - or, as seedier transactions tend to go, it could be negative. You have to take them back to a place they really don't want to return to, you have to be a jailor, or you even have to be their assassin. At the very least, helping or hurting, you'll be compensated generously (by money or, you know, by not being killed off). And that was all that mattered. Until they mattered. They could have shown you something you never knew existed in the world or in yourself. They could have done any number of things, yet they've won you and your feelings over. Your priorities just may shift because of this, but will their view of you do the same as soon as they learn why you were around them in the first place? For your own gain? Will they be able to forgive you? Even if they can, will they be able to see you the way you see them?

I'm just sorry that my good fortune ended so badly for you.
I just-- hope my folks don't make a big deal of me being gone. I'm not sure how to circumvent that. I mean... I don't know a whole bunch about technology but I did overhear that some phones can be... traced?
[He makes a face, uncertain. The last thing he wants is for a reason for the police to be involved out of their favor.]
It would be fine if I just called them on a payphone to let them know that I'm not coming back?
Or would that be too risky to you?
I don't want them to, well, get the police involved and make it harder to move around.
no subject
[ he glances back at Ren, offering a wry smile in return. ]
I'm not gonna tell you no. Do what you want—right? You're free to.
[ at this point, what's a little extra risk? and it's not like his boss would know what Ren looks like. ]
I think we can leave now. It's gotten pretty late.
no subject
[It's his choice. Being able - and encouraged - to think for himself is... daunting, as well as exciting. He thinks he saw a pay phone nearby, so he picks up what he grabbed from the boxes and heads for the door.]
I'm gonna call them before we go. Won't take long since I plan on being the only one talking. And I don't have much that I gotta say.
[Holding the stuff also helps hide the fact that his hands are shaking at the thought. He's going to tell them, not ask them.
[So he waits for Cain to unlock the door before heading out to do just that.]
no subject
[ he gives the room one last look and then shrugs his shoulders. ain't missing much here. and with that he unlocks the door, stepping out into the hallway and nodding his chin at Ren, ]
Let me take that. I'm gonna set up the truck while you do that.
[ a make-shift bed, at least. ]
no subject
[He can't help the sheepish look on his face when he gives the bundle of stuff to Cain, and then immediately shoves his shaking hands into his pockets.]
I-I'll see you in a few.
[He keeps his brave face on while he makes his way to the pay phone. This is just-- something he needs to get over with. It's been a long-time coming. There's a lot of anger, but now's not the time. Taking a breath, he stuffs some change into it and waits for his folks to pick up, only for him to have to pull the receiver away from his ear once the person on the other end hears his voice and starts shrieking at him in indignation. Ouch. Once he can, he pulls it back to his ear in order to speak rather loudly into it - he doesn't want to be talked over.]
Just be quiet for a second and let me talk!!--- I'm not coming back, ever, and--- no YOU let me finish!- you can shove that "betrothed" crap where the sun don't shine!
I'm. Not. Coming. Back. And there ain't jack shit you can do about it!! Bye!
[And hanging up with a slam for good measure. O-oh, his legs are wobbling. When did that happen? Well, everything's shaking and his heart is pounding and-- no no, now's not the time to be getting hard just because he can hear his own heartbeat in his ears. What kind of rush is this.]
...I just swore at my mom.
...Huh....
[He's not sure how he feels about that.]
no subject
frankly, he thinks he did a pretty good job, looking at the plush blanket and pillows thrown about. not too shabby. better than sleeping on a bench, anyway.
sure, he overhears bits of the conversation. how could he not? and he's leaning against the truck when Ren finishes, arms crossed. ]
That's a rite of passage, you know.
[ or so he guesses. he didn't know his, but it seems like... the right thing to say? maybe? ]
So how're you feeling?
no subject
[He's still shaking, too. He takes a slow breath, and then another.]
...I don't know why I was expecting anything different.
[Expression twisting in a grimace, he stretches his legs a bit in an effort to stop them from shaking.]
I do know that even though there's more I wish I could say, they wouldn't hear it. So I guess this is as good as it gets.
And... that's fine.
[Still unsettled, Ren gives Cain a small, but grateful smile.]
Shall we?
no subject
[ he swings open the driver's door, dropping into the seat and checking his mirrors. ]
If you want, you can always write them a letter or something. If you wanted to.
[ a n y w a y ]
Look! I made a bed.
[ he gestures to the back of the truck. so classy!!! ]
no subject
Looks great.
[He turns forward again, and leans back against the seat.]
Anyway, my folks are the type to only hear what they want to. So. Even a letter wouldn't help. And clue-by-fours bounce right off their heads.
Just... no one likes feeling like someone they love goes missing. So this way, I'm not "missing".
no subject
All right.
[ Cain supposes he'll believe Ren, if he says that's true. he's not calling anyone. doesn't need to. ]
You can forget about them, then. Where should we go now?
no subject
So anywhere's fine. It'll all be new to me, anyway.
[He manages a soft smile in an attempt to soften his words.]
Anywhere where your boss might not immediately think to look, too.
no subject
Never know with that guy. And what, you never even heard of anywhere? Shit.
[ making a face, he leans his head back against the headrest. ] First, I wanna get some damn food, once we're far away enough. Otherwise, I guess I'll just drive until I'm tired, and then we'll pull over and get some actual sleep.
[ as good a plan as any. ]
no subject
[Ren draws a breath, a little unsettled with his memories.]
I was never allowed to go far. What use is going out and meeting people or learning how to drive when you're just going to have the same place of death as the place you were born?
But... food actually sounds pretty nice. Oh, and, uh... I'm kind of... clingy, in my sleep.
[His cheeks turned the slightest bit pink.]
So, I'm apologizing ahead of time in case it bothers you.
no subject
[ he glances at Ren before turning his eyes back to the road. ]
Shit, I'm probably worse than you are. You'll have to kick me away.
[ with his tone he probably sounds like he's... kidding... but he's not. he likes close proximity when he sleeps; likes touching in general. physical is where it's at. ]
I don't sleep alone if I can help it.
no subject
Then again, I've only been able to sleep alone. But I'm willing to bet that cuddling you is more satisfying than a pillow.
[He lets out a quiet, mischievous chuckle.]
In hindsight, how easily you picked me up was pretty amazing.
[In the good way, of course. Then again, he's tiny, so he's not too surprised, either, that Cain was able to lift him so.]
no subject
[ he grins, laughing a little too. speeding up, he heads down an intersection that's pretty bare—no one's really traveling this way, this time of night. which is good. they'll probably come across one of those stop and pee lots soon. ]
I can do a lot more than that.
[ suggestive? definitely. ]
You're not heavy, either.
no subject
[Ren makes a face, but then loses his composure and snickers.]
I imagine you can.
[Suggestive, right back at him. Just because he said he doesn't fuck on the first date doesn't mean he can't reciprocate some teasing.]
I'd say more, but you're driving, so I doubt you'd appreciate getting... distracted, since we just headed out.
no subject
[ like... he could just masturbate while he drives if he had to, but that might make a first date just a little awkward. so he keeps that thought to himself, pressing on the gas and hitting a nice 65. ]
We've got all night. Or at least a few hours until I need to sleep.
no subject
Fair call.
[Discomfort over such a high speed aside, Ren honestly would only panic if Cain jerked off while driving. But, as it is, such a concept doesn't even occur to him.
[So, oblivious to that, he finds himself idly trying to undress Cain with his eyes. Well, from the hips up, and he ignores the warmth building up in his body.]
I like to at least try to fall asleep before 2am, myself.
no subject
Got some time before then. No traffic anyway, so we can get some distance before it's too late.
[ glancing at one of the billboards, he offers Ren another grin. ] And it looks like there's a stopover ahead. Fuck yeah! We can stock up on some food and shit.
no subject
Sounds good.
[He's trying not to blush too much as he peers back at Cain again.]
...D'ya mind, if... uh.
[He's utterly failing at keeping his blushing at bay.]
...we grab.. condoms, if they sell them?
no subject
[ his eyes flick to Ren and then back to the road quickly, following a curve that'll allow them to hit that 7-11 and gas station in the stopover. ]
... Oh? [ the grin turns into a smirk and he tilts his head, hair brushing his shoulder. what have you been thinking about, Ren? not that Cain's gonna complain. ] Yeah? Sure. Long as they're not gonna go to waste.
no subject
[Cain's hot so sue him. Not that he'd only bang him for that. There's more to it than that.]
Just-- if we're gonna be on the road a lot, it... makes sense to be able to contain a mess. Right?
[He's not sure how to broach the topic, though. About the fact that once the clothes come off, Cain will be able to see everything. His fingers fidget on his lap.]
no subject
[ he's got a point there—it's not like a hotel room where they can just leave the sheets for someone else to deal with. and they have to drive in the van. honestly, the idea doesn't really bother Cain, but he can see the logic. ]
We can pick up whatever you think we'll need.
[ easing the car to slow, he pulls into the lot, driving toward the 7-11 in the distance. ]
I've got some cash and a card, so money isn't really a problem for now.
no subject
...
[Once they've pulled up into a parking space, Ren reaches out to grab Cain's forearm, a rather uncomfortable, downright look on his face.]
B-before that, I-- feel like I should be forthright with you, but this isn't easy to say. However, depending on how long we'll be on the road in the long-term, it's... necessary.
And I don't... want you to find out at some point with no warning, and... I don't know, get disgusted with me. But I already like being around you and... god....
[His grip is shaking just the slightest bit.]
So, I'll... I'll just state it plainly.
[Taking a slow breath, Ren leveled Cain with an uneasy expression. One by one, his muscles tense up, as if preparing to fight or flee.]
I'm... physically female.
