[ Looking towards a future and finding what they can do together in some way made him feel a bit better, at least. ]

... I guess I should thank you for having me over.

I couldn't let the rival I've come to love so much leave without seeing him one last time. You'd probably try to leave on your own without anyone at the airport to make you get emotional. So we can get it all out now instead.

[ He kept up the tone, even smiling up at the stars as he spoke. This time he was spending with him now was all he got for a long time, and it was so different from how they usually connected. ]

... The way you put things is so embarrassing sometimes.

[the rival he's come to love so much? makishima's ears are burning. he looks over at him.]

If you're going to get emotional on me, you should do it.

Are you trying to rush me? [ He didn't look over at him, keeping his eyes toward the sky. ]

Or maybe you just want to know someone cares about you. This is an opportunity. Most of us would never get to go overseas to study anything. While your fashion is weird, I hope that you get what you're looking for there. As the person I've chosen to acknowledge, I know you can do great things.

No matter what, when you hit the world stage in whatever you choose to pursue, I'll be here with you in my thoughts. You're more than just my rival, and I'll never think or feel less than I do now for all of the time we spent together growing into what we are now.

[ He wanted to look at Makishima, to know what his words did, but he didn't need to. He's already come to understand Makishima's feeling without having to see them as they happen. ]

[instantly, makishima is silenced. toudou lets out what he has built up, and it does everything to makishima that he could possibly dream of it doing. his cheeks heat up, his heart starts pounding; he's absolutely in love and it's the worst possible timing.

[the quiet drags on for a while, before makishima can get himself to speak. even then, it's hushed, like he's worried about what's going to come out of his mouth being heard.]

... You know, I wouldn't do anything big without telling you. If I make it, you'll be flown out for events. [he's nervous, for superior saying such convicted words.]

[ Toudou smiled widely, finally turning toward him with his usual cocky look. He has no idea his words struck so deeply in Makishima. He was pretty sure that he's said worse, more feelsy and emotional things about the two of them before. Not that he's ever said them to Makishima himself, but he's said them to other people... ]

Are you going to let me show you up in your own job? Ahahahaha! I'll go anywhere to--

[ He actually paused, biting on how he was going to say it, and in exchange changing it to ]

--be at your side again, rivals or friends, no matter what.

[oh, no, he caught that. And as embarrassed as he is right now, he knows that toudou jinpachi does not falter. he fixes him with a very firm gaze despite the red on his cheeks.]

... What were you going to say? [and how could it be worse than what you said????]

[ Why do you tempt the fates so, Makishima? ]

It wasn't going to be too different from what I said. "To be with you again". Climbers are supposed to be solitary, but we always rode alone together. You aren't going to find a climber like me out there.

[ And if he did, Toudou would probably call him a traitor and whine to Arakita forever. ]

[honesty is in short supply with this one when it comes to baring feelings.]

Even if they were better, they wouldn't be you.

When you start dating, I expect to see pictures. Anyone good enough to catch your eye is someone I need to see.

[ He'd be supportive, even if romantic partner wouldn't understand their rivalry. They would just have to deal. ]

You own at least six mirrors...

I hate it when you mumble like that. I can't hear anything you just said.

[ Really Makishima, don't be so rude. ]

It's not important. [oh but his face is burning red.]

Maki-chan, it didn't sound like it was unimportant. Why are you being shy when it's just the two of us? Maybe you were saying that you won't find a westerner as beautiful and talented as I am to date over there. I don't blame you for being depressed over that since I'm so amazing, but being alone is no fun! You need to make friends, even if I know that's difficult for you.

[ Toudou had turned, so his back is against the railing and his elbows are propped up on them. His head was back, laughing quietly to the sky. ]

.... You know what, never mind. You're too embarrassing.

[he's gonna turn to go walk inside again. this is too much for him.]

..Maki-chan? No, I want to know what you said! Maki-chan!

[ Leaning up and watching him, reaching out dramatically. Don't leave him, Makishima. It was perfect! Why do you hurt him so? ]

I should go home. [he isn't serious. he walks into the bedroom and sis in the edge of the bed, laying back and digging the heels of his hands into his eyes.]

It's the middle of the night!

[ It's a long ride back to Chiba, Makishima. Don't put yourself in that pain.

He's not even following him back into the bedroom. Toudou is huffing and turning around again to look outward and not inside where Makishima was.]

And yet...

[and yet he doesn't leave the bed. after a minute, he'll get up to his elbows and look at toudou again, watching him from behind. the moonlight gives him a halo in a way, and honestly... well, he can't deny the beauty of it all. he's never been able to.

[and mean it, anyway.

[if toudou turns around, he'll catch makishima staring. if he doesn't, makishima will get up and slowly walk back out to him... and put his forehead against the back of toudou's shoulder.]

Maki-chan?

[ He hadn't looked back, so the sudden pressure was surprising. Looking back, he looked at the green tresses. He was acting strangely, and Toudou wasn't sure what to say about it. ]

What's wrong?

[makishima doesn't respond for long enough for the silence to be a little awkward. he's trying to figure out what's going on within himself enough to dredge up words. his pride is awkward, self-centered in a way that is entirely reliant on his own opinion. it's a strong pride, but not one that's easily hurt by others.

[but he can definitely feel the sting at the words that manage to come out.]

... Am I making the right choice?

Going after your dreams and big aspirations are always the right choice.

[ It may have been a painful thought to not have his rival close by anymore, but Makishima would be bettering himself and going after what he really wants. That's never the wrong choice. He gets to see the world and grow, and there's nothing more he'd ever wish for him than the best. ]

... It'll be a new field.

[what if he gets a new rival?]

You'll dominate it because you're my rival and the man I acknowledge.
