On Your Doorstep

They ended up on your doorstep, quite literally. Bloody, possibly. Bruised, most definitely, though the wounds may be mental. You probably don't know them from Adam, yet you couldn't find it in you to turn them away - whether they wanted you to or not. So you opened up your home, just for a little while.

But it's getting to be more than a little while. Both of you are finding a comfort zone, because you didn't simply open up your home. Admit it or don't, but you've opened up your heart all the same.

Their's is slowly following, if its reluctant at all.

[It's far past closing time at the Lucky Cat Cafe, the restaurant part of the building is nearly abandoned, with the Hamada family going about their business before they turn in for the night.

Baymax is always curious, he had followed Mochi the cat down the stairs and into the cafe section, watching the round cat meander about.

He's brought out of his cat-watching by a sudden knock on the door. He stands up straight, tilting his head to look over to the glass door.

It doesn't take his scanners to see that the late-night visitor is injured. He quickly waddles over to the door and attempts to open it. At first, he fails, then he remembers the lock. It takes a simple flick for him to unlock and open the door. Once the door is open, the robot gives Chihiro a gentle, circular wave in greeting.]

Hello, I am Baymax, your personal healthcare companion. You are injured, are you able to walk inside?

[Well. Whatever he was expecting to see when he opened the door, it was not that. For a moment he just stares, transfixed, before nodding slightly. He steps across the threshold, glancing nervously over his shoulder before turning his attention back to the robot. He doesn't say anything though, not yet.

He's sporting a black eye, as well as a few other bruises along the side of his face. Everything else seems to be in order, but that much alone is enough to bring Chihiro close to tears.]

[Baymax watches Chihiro enter the building, once he's satisfied that he seems to be stable, he toddles over to one of the tables and pulls down one of the chairs, setting it on the ground right-side up.

He turns his attention back to Chihiro, shuffling around to face him again. He gestures towards the chair.]

Please sit down. It will allow you to rest while I attend to your injuries.

[It's easy to pick up on his patient's nervousness, combined with him looking over his shoulder, Baymax tries to put him at ease.]

Please do not be alarmed. If someone or something is pursuing you, you will be safe here.

[Not only did both him and Hiro have their suits nearby, Baymax is certain that Aunt Cass wouldn't put up with unwelcome intruders.]

Um...o-okay.

[He sits down slowly, keeping an eye on Baymax as his curiosity about this strange figure outweighs his fear for the moment. He wants to ask what Baymax...is actually, beyond his 'personal healthcare companion', but he can't quite seem to find his voice entirely yet. So, instead, he remains seated with his hands folded in his lap.]

[While Chihiro seats himself, Baymax closes the door, and after pausing for a moment, locks it.

He then walks over to his patient, scanning him to see if there's any more injuries besides the bruises and black eye.]

You are suffering from a periorbital hematoma and several contusions on your face.

[He brings up a screen with 10 different faces, all color-coded and going from happy to horribly upset.]

On a scale of one to ten, how would you rate your pain?

[He hesitates for a moment, scanning the screen briefly before pointing at the 9th face, reaching up a hand to wipe at his uninjured eye.]

[That's a worrisome answer, Baymax hasn't treated a patient in that much pain before, he knows he has to work quickly in order to reduce Chihiro's pain.]

Do not worry, it will take a short amount of time before your pain level is reduced, but I will do everything I can for you.

[He picks up a washcloth from one of the tables and goes over to a sink, running it under hot water in order to clean and sterilize it the best he can. Once he's satisfied with that, he runs cold water over the washcloth to cool it down. Then he waddles over to the drink machine and uses the ice dispenser to fill up the cloth with ice. When he's got the desired amount of ice in the washcloth, he folds the edges around it and walks back over to Chihiro.]

Putting something cold on your periorbital hematoma for ten minutes at a time is the best way to treat a periorbital hematoma.

[He holds out the bundle of ice to Chihiro.]

Please hold this against your injured eye while I go get some pain reliever for you, I will not be gone long.

[He takes the ice from Baymax carefully, lifting it up to his face. It obscures one eye, but he can still see to look up at him through the other as he continues.]

Okay. ...thank you.

[Baymax gives him a polite nod.]

I will return once I have gotten the needed items.

[He then waddles his way up the stairs and to the bathroom, where the medicine is kept. He grabs two bottles of pain reliever and a box of tissues.

When he returns around 4 minutes later, he finds that Mochi's done his best to cheer up their visitor, winding around Chihiro's legs and purring loudly.

Baymax walks over and puts the box of tissues and the two bottles of medicine down on the table next to Chihiro.]

You can take up to two Tylenol and four ibuprofen at one time for pain. Consistently taking the maximum dosage is not recommended, but in cases of extreme pain the maximum dosage can be administered.

I will get you some water to take the pain medicine with.

[He goes over to the drink machine, picks out the medium-sized cup, and uses the water option to fill it up.

When the cup is full, he slowly walks back over to Chihiro and holds it out to him.]

Would you like me to hold the ice against your periorbital hematoma while you take the pain reliever? You have a few minutes left before the recommended time is up.

Ice is also used for the treatment of contusions, the rule of using ice ten minutes at a time is also applied here.

[Mochi's presence does wonders to help calm Chihiro down, and most of his nervousness now seems to be stemming from the fact that he's in an unfamiliar place, as opposed to whatever caused him to get the injuries he has. When Baymax returns with the water he takes it in one hand while nodding a little, taking the ice off of his face and putting it in the robot's hand.

The way he's dispensing information in such a detailed manner confirms his suspicions that he has to be an AI of some sort...but he has to ask, just to be sure.]

You...are a robot, aren't you?

[Mochi is a big, warm, and fat cat, the namesake of the Lucky Cat Cafe. He's grown up around the cafe and the Hamada family, so he's very friendly. He has half a mind to jump up in Chihiro's lap, but he's learned better than to bother people sitting at the cafe tables. There's been a few too many incidents that ended with food and drink accidentally spilled on him.

Baymax gently takes the ice from Chihiro and carefully presses it to his eye. There's only a short while left until it needs to be moved, but he wants it to have been on there as long as possible.

He nods in response to the question.]

Yes, I am a robotic nurse programmed with over 10,000 different medical procedures.

....can you tell me who programmed you?

[It's strange to see such a vastly advanced AI in a small cafe like this. What is it doing here, and not in a hospital where it could actually be used?]

[Baymax nods.]

Yes. I was programmed by Tadashi Hamada for his robotics project at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology.

I see. I am surprised I have not heard of you before. You seem very highly advanced.

[Baymax tilts his head.]

Hiro told me that I have been in the newspaper several times.

[Mostly for hero things, however. Seems like, for now, they're keeping his medical capabilities quiet. Though, he's heard talk of them duplicating him for hospitals and households that need a nurse readily available. It's been taking some time to work out the manufacturing.]

Mm...I see.

[Ah. So that's probably why he hasn't really heard of him.

For a little while Chihiro stays quiet, letting the coolness of the ice soothe the bruises on his face.]

My...my name is Chihiro. Chihiro Fujisaki.

[Baymax doesn't mind the quiet, quiet can help relax people who are recovering.

He's not programmed for small talk, so he just nods politely in return before asking a question.]

Do you live near here, Chihiro?

[He shakes his head slightly.]

My father is on a business trip to this part of the city, and had me come with him this time. We've been staying in a hotel not far away.

[Baymax nods.]

Once I have tended to your injuries, I will take you back to your hotel.

[He didn't want Chihiro's father worrying about him being gone for so long. If whoever or whatever was still after Chihiro, then he might change into his armor before they go, just to be safe.

Baymax checks his internal timer.]

It is time for the ice pack to be removed from your eye. It needs to remain off of your eye for at least ten minutes.

[He blinks once as he checks his internal database.]

Which contusion is causing you the most pain?

[He points to his eye, slowly.]

It...doesn't hurt as much as it did, though.

I am glad that the pain of your periorbital hematoma has gone down. The treatment is working.

Is there another spot that you would like the ice pack to be placed on? It will be several more minutes before you can place the ice pack on your periorbital hematoma again.

Mmm...here.

[He points to the smaller bruises dotting the other side of his face.]

[Baymax nods, then gently places the ice pack on the indicated area.]

Ice can be applied to your contusions three or more times a day for ten to twenty minutes at a time. Contusions heal on their own, but placing ice on your contusions will keep your pain level down. You can take Tylenol every four to six hours and ibuprofen every six hours. Do not take more than five dosages of Tylenol and four dosages of ibuprofen in a 24-hour period.

[There's not much more he can do for Chihiro, so he's telling him how to take care of his injuries once he's returned to his hotel.]

[He really does appreciate it, though. He just isn't sure what he's going to do when he gets back to the hotel and has to explain what happened to his father...]

How did you get these contusions? You do not have to answer if you are not comfortable doing so.

[If there's someone or something causing trouble, then somebody needed to know about it. Baymax and his friends could likely take care of the problem, but they had to be aware of the situation first.]
