Her eyebrows lifted when he pulled the Jeep over and parked. She stopped walking and took a bite of her cake. She chewed and swallowed before she responded.

"I didn't think you were doing it out of spite, Stiles. I think you just don't know when to shut up."

"It's a possibility. But... I don't know. Would you rather I just didn't care?" Because it was too late for that. Even before the whole naked touchy thing, that that hadn't helped.

She took another bite of her cake, purposely not responding until she had finished chewing and swallowing again.

"That's not it, Stiles. There's a difference between caring and showing concern and being a dick about it. Derek is my Alpha. I ran once before and I got strung up by an Argent. Maybe you don't agree with his methods, but do you think that if I wasn't comfortable with it that I would let it continue?"

He shoved his hands in his pockets, looking over at her and shrugging. "I don't know. I don't think you have a lot of options, but I also think Derek needs to learn to deal with humans. He sucks at it. Even former humans."

"That's your issue with Derek. I don't have a problem with it."

Her fork took another piece of her cake, but she didn't eat it yet. "It's nice that you care. It is, but I don't want to hear how what I'm doing is the wrong way. That's your opinion."

She'll eat that cake now.

She was probably right, but it was unfairly distracting to have this discussion when she was eating cake. He could smell it from where he was standing and he could see the smears of icing left on her lips.

Nope, not thinking of that. "So you're okay with him treating you like crap?"

"Have you seen our training sessions? Do you know what we do? Do you have first hand account of what goes on or are you just judging it by some dried blood I cleaned off my chin?"

Stop using logic, Erica. He was going on feelings here. "No, but I'm pretty sure I'd be just as not okay with it after seeing it as I am now." Not to mention he'd be refraining from kicking Derek in the nuts if he saw him hit her.

His feelings are going to get him left alone with his Jeep.

"Are you upset with me or with him?"

Think, Stiles. Don't just answer. "Him." And maybe a little at her for not seeing that she was getting treated like a pinata.

She wasn't being treated like a pinata, though. That would make it as though she was just standing there getting beat on. Most of her injuries were related to offensive wounds, to throwing a punch and Derek defending himself.

"Then stop being like this."

"Being like what?" But he knew. Okay, so he might have a problem with being overly protective towards the females in his life. He had a very good reason. This had nothing to do with the whole naked thing and everything to do with his own personal issues. Issues he wasn't going into right here and now. Possibly not ever.

She frowned, "I can walk around you."

He pulled his hands out of his pockets and held them up. "Don't. Look, I just... Dammit! You're not making this easy."

Neither was his brain. All the words he'd been planning on saying got thrown into a blender and had come out looking like dog vomit. This was not going according to plan.

Her weight shifted on her feet, feeling a bit odd that she's in sneakers and doesn't hear the click of heels on the street. She had been working out though, so she doesn't have her clothing to add on top of her attitude.

Still, she stayed put and closed the clear lid that snapped shut on her half-eaten piece of cake.

"I'm not making this easy. What is 'this' that you want to be easy?"

"You. Me. Talking. Stuff." He was so very eloquent when he was trying to get his point across. He let out a frustrated groan, hands scrubbing his face before he splayed them out again. "I want you to want to hang out with me. Not just because you're being told to come get me or we're stuck somewhere."

"I thought we already had that and then you decided to pick another fight about my training - which weren't not talking about again."

He opened his mouth, then closed it. She might be right there, but his testosterone wanted to argue it. "Which is why I'm trying again." Because persistence was his middle name.

Or possibly his first.

She shrugged, "Do you want some cake?"

"Huh? Oh, no. No I'm fine, thanks. But I would like to give you a ride home, if you can stand being in a small enclosed space with me."

"I can stand being in an enclosed space with you."

She smirked at him, gesturing with her cake container in her hand, "Are you gonna open the door for me, too?"

"What? Oh, yeah." He smiled, going over to the jeep and holding open the passenger door for her. So he'd gotten her to agree to a ride home. It was a start.

Erica got into the car and set the rest of her cake on her lap. She could've walked home and the thought of him driving slowly alongside her to try and convince her into the car was amusing, but this was just easier. She didn't want to give him a stroke or something.

How kind of her. He'd be sure to send her a thank you card for not killing him. He ran around the front and got in on his side, starting the jeep back up and grinning over at her. "Okay, so, uh, where am I going?"

No, Erica, he hadn't gotten to the point where he'd stalked down your address yet.

She points ahead, "Just keep going here. Second light turn left." She'd guide him the rest of the way too, all the way to the modest split level that her parents owned. They didn't mind her being out late anymore, mostly because she had them convinced that she was still on her meds and that she was doing much better in school. They figured the risks were worth the rewards.
