[ she knows that she shouldn't let him provoke her, but there's something about tony stark's insolence and blatant disregard for authority and sacrifice and brotherhood, for things that she's fought so hard to be part of, to make her own. it stings the way all those rejections from the army did, worse perhaps because she's made it in and she's become who she is, she's seen people die and good men fight so that others could live a life of peace. she believes in following orders and doing right by every single soldier and leading them into battle. she believes that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and tony continually spits in the face of that.

she could handle it better. she knows she could, knows she should. she should be the better man in this, for all that she isn't male. it doesn't matter. perhaps she could, if she weren't so sleep-deprived, so tired and angry because she keeps losing bucky over and over in her dreams and tony, tony stark says he would cut the wire rather than make the sacrifice. does he understand that sometimes there's situations where there's no solutions? does he understand the cost that comes with sacrifice and how noble it can be? (steph has to believe that, because otherwise what is bucky's death worth?)

so she could probably handle it in a way that doesn't include pushing him against the wall, hard enough that it might leave bruises because she's checking her strength, but not to the extent that she could, and slanting her mouth over his because it's the only way she can think to just make him shut up. ]

A miss then, but it's planned, never intended to hit it's mark, because where's the fun to be had in a game that's over too soon? No, a swift kill isn't what he wants. It rarely ever is.

That much should be obvious from the way his smile curves wide across his face, lips slightly parted and the pearl-white flash of teeth like he's thinking something dirty and who knows, maybe he is. Because sex and death, fucking and bloodshed, they're all the same when you get down to the bare bones of it, when you strip away the layers of false civilisation and cut down to the animal underneath]
