can't hurt your soulmate, lies appear on skin, soulmates share a heartbeat READY GO
Which is startling enough before the Russian script starts to appear on the boy's skin.
They don't hide it from Howard so much as continuously forget to mention it as they are equally erratic in nature and entirely beyond his ability to translate. Jarvis and Tony simply become deft hands at applying foundation and powder, at wearing long sleeves. At least they seem clustered, absurdly enough, along Anthony's left arm, starting at his shoulder blade in a repetitive, near hypnotic crawl down to his wrist.
Then comes school and Anthony is Tony, and his moments of activity are heightened by socializing with Tiberius and Whitney who beg and wheedle and just want to know- but they don't know Russian and Tony never, ever takes his shirt off around anyone. It's secret. And until he can find a way to hide them properly? It's foundation and powder and waterproof sealant. The day Howard figures out Tony's working on cosmetic chemistry is a day for yelling, more than one bottle of scotch thrown, and the single instance of Howard leaving a bruise. Not from a fist thrown, no, but gripping Tony's arm so tight as he demands, over and over, why he's connected to commie trash.
No translation is forthcoming, and Tony makes his studies of Russian secret. By the time he's in collage, he's fluent, and the lies remain the same enigmatic pattern.

Over and over, with no discernible cause or reason, and even when he knows what it means? He...doesn't know what it means.
Meeting Rhodey is a revelation and a heartbreak all on it's own- one of the rare moments when he can feel his heart and he hopes, he prays for all that he's long since decided God is dead and Howard Stark killed him, that Rhodey knows Russian. That Rhodey has a reason for the random, enigmatic scrawl on his skin- but then Rhodey lies about not needing help dealing with a teacher and two weeks after that the same awareness Tony gets, now and then, drops to nothing. Muffled.
If there was a pattern, if there was some correlation- maybe he could figure out what was going on. After three years of knowing Rhodey? Tony finally shows someone else the lies. Talks about the weird moments when his heart races, when it settles, the long stretches of not quite apathy but dulled awareness in between...and they work on it together.
On December 16th, 1991, everything changes. He's awake and ware in a visceral sort of way that lends itself to a long binge in the garage after his parents drive out, things seem almost like they're getting along, almost like he could forgive Howard his suspicion, the bruising and then-
They're gone, the world's shattered, and it's the longest stretch he's had an awareness of everything in awhile. Calling up Ty, Sunset, and Whitney for a bad idea of a good time makes sense. Even if Rhodey has to help him dry out afterward. He's fine, he's fine, he'll be fine, it doesn't matter what he wanted to build or do with his life, Stark Industries needs him, so he has to step up.
And he does.
The rest of the 90s are a blur, the early aughties less so but only marginally then-
Afghanistan, and he should've died.
Didn't.
He's been alone in his skin for so long, no new lies, no new moments of awareness he figured whoever they were, whatever they were doing? They're long since dead, and he'll be dead with them shortly.
Except he doesn't die.
Except Yensin swears he saw Tony's heart still beating, slow and sluggish, when he put in the car battery when everyone in the room knew he should be a dead man. When even after the dunk drowning and the hot coals and everything else of that fucking cave- he doesn't die.
Then Obie. The reactor's killing him, it's not killing him, the world's ending and the wormhole- a million little moments that should've killed him but his heart just keeps on beating. Nevermind the new and exciting attention being Iron Man has gotten him. Nevermind that a few days ago his heart kicked off another round of awareness that keeps him up at night, just like always, and he has to wonder-
He could try to find them. Thought maybe Natasha was it but- no. The marks on his arm go nearly down to his wrist by now, under the coverall foundation he invented as a teenager. He could've gotten rid of them but- maybe it's a bizarre comfort, knowing there is someone out in the world he can't fuck up and hurt- that can't hurt him. Someone he's bound to even if he's pretty far over the average age of meeting your soulmate. Doesn't matter. He's got the tower, he
hashad Pep, and they're back to friends, he's got a whole new project by way of preparing the Tower for the latest renovation and...he'll live.Figure out the puzzle of his own skin and pulse later.

sad fings!
To the point that they had begun to effect Gareth's every day life. He would get snippy sometimes and even developed a nasty case of what Eddie liked to call 'Resting Bitch Face'. It took a while for him to really figure out who it was making him feel that way and when he finally did...he had no idea what to do.
Billy fucking Hargrove? Really? Of all the people in Hawkins it had to be one of the most unattainable people? Even if he didn't have Tommy H hanging off of him all the time, he was Billy Hargrove. He hated Hawkins and everything in it, and he wasn't as good at hiding it as he thought he was.
Then the fear set in, sometime in the summer, before the big fire at the mall, there was a fear that had Gareth on edge. He had no idea what it was for and it was so much more intense than any fear he'd felt from Hargrove in the past. It seemed to pass after a bit and was followed by this weird relief? Like a victory or something. It was something Gareth could never place but he felt like there was more that fire than everyone would tell him. Something wasn't right.
Spring break only confirmed that. He was a mess on his own with Eddie, his best friend in the entire world, being accused of murder. The rest of Hell Fire being called some Satan worshipping cult, Jason coming and hasseling them, threatening to break his hand and at least spraining it pretty badly, it was all hell. Add to that the frantic sort of panic that seemed to be through him all the time because of Hargrove. What was the guy up to? Why did everything he feel from the guy feel so urgent, like a life or death situation?!
And then it happened. He heard that Billy was in the hospital and he was in a very bad way. Making his way to the hospital he managed to get in to see Billy but when he got there he just....stood at the door. Leaning on the door frame as he looked in at the guy, casts around his arms and legs and suspended, he definitely didn't look so good but at least he was alive so said the machines beeping away in the corner. Still it was hard for Gareth to bring himself to actually walk in. Relief and also a sense of apprehension fell over him, something he was sure Billy would feel if he was awake. Still, he didn't know what else to do. What was he supposed to do? Go in there demanding to know what the fuck was going on? Spill completely that he knew they were soulmates?

Summer of '85 - aka: The Summer of Starcourt, let's give her a chance at survival
The problem was that it came and went infrequently, and never lasted long enough for her to focus on and figure out what it could be, at least not until that fall when the church got a new choir director who stressed tempo above all else, and she realized that what she'd been hearing -what she'd been feeling- was music, or at least the supposed backbone of any given song. It was also when she suddenly felt very apologetic for the number of times that Time After Time had been stuck in her head because it had definitely gotten to the point where it was annoying her and she could only imagine what it was doing to someone else.
Of course, by the time she'd made that realization it was too late in the year and with Christmas Break coming -since she was reasonably sure her soulmate had to be a fellow student, because why would they be someone from far away?- she wouldn't have the chance to actually look for them, especially when all of her free time went to preparing for the Christmas Pageant, which she knew was tradition, but she'd hoped that she'd finally be able to get out of it this year.
She still hadn't found them, whoever they were, by her 17th birthday, but that too was reasonably normal, lots of people needed two or even three signifiers to figure it out, some people needed even more. The only thing she knew for sure was that despite her mother's insistence, it definitely wasn't Jason.
Getting ready for errands the morning of her birthday she'd caught her own reflection in the mirror on her closet door, except that it wasn't just her reflection, there was a clear reflection of someone else superimposed over it, like the after-images left by a camera flash. It had still been enough to startle a short, sharp scream out of her, slamming the door automatically, and in the two weeks since, it had happened again a handful of times, just as irregularly as the tempo-thrum in the back of her head. It had happened again that morning, as a matter of fact, just as she'd finished pulling her hair up, but this time she was determined not to think about it because today she had plans. She was going to the mall with Amber, with the intention of getting a new dress for the 4th of July carnival, and she wasn't going to let anything get in the way of being away from her mother for at least a few hours.

post-season 4, here have a novel
So seeing how his parents drifted apart, he had ignored the phantom touches at first when they started happening. Until it had been impossible to ignore. Whoever it was that was his supposed soulmate was getting bullied. Which just made Steve want to ignore it even further, because so long as he ignored it then he didn't have to face the possibility that his own friends were the ones hurting this poor person.
It wasn't until the winter of '84 that he started to really pay closer attention. And if this person was feeling the touches bestowed upon him?
Well, not only had they unfortunately been privy to each and every attempt Steve had at ignoring the existence of his soulmate, but they must have felt each fight he had been in. First Jonathan Byers, then Billy?
Nothing ever came of it, though. He went on with his life and served ice cream at Scoops Ahoy, wondering if maybe this would be the time when he would finally figure out who his damn soulmate was. For a moment he thought maybe it really could be Robin. She was bullied, after all. And then the Russians happened, and the conversation on the bathroom, and Steve's eyes were opened. Opened to the possibility that maybe his soulmate wasn't a girl, and maybe he would be okay with that if he was a boy.
Somehow, he pulled himself back together, but he carried himself differently after that. For one, every little unexpected noise caused him to jolt, making his work days at Family Video somewhat of a personal hell. But also, he ceased the attempts at dating, deciding to take this whole soulmate thing seriously. He swore off dates until he could finally figure out who it was, and apologize for putting them through hell the past few years.
But he or she never came forward, and then Spring Break happened, and Eddie Munson, and --
and his hand started hurting out of nowhere, excruciating pain like he was sure it was about to snap in half. It reminded him far too much of the Russians, and he knew, he knew this wasn't Vecna, but his soulmate. Someone was physically prying information out of his soulmate, and Steve's blood started boiling. It wouldn't do him any good to track this person down now, though, especially if it was someone trying to track down Eddie, so he reluctantly pressed forward. Once Eddie was cleared, he told himself, he would find his soulmate. He would find his soulmate and find whoever hurt them and make them pay.
Only he was pulled into Lover's Lake first, nearly torn to shreds, dragged across the ground and made to think that he was about to die without even meeting his soulmate.
When all was said and done, when Vecna was laid to waste and the portals were finally closed and Steve was forced to rest on a hospital gurney, waiting for his own wounds to get tended to, all he hoped for was that whoever his soulmate was, they managed to make it through the earthquakes, that they weren't counted among the dead.
Amazing, I love it
