[ And he can't argue with that, not after all he just said about taking care of her. Jefferson bites his lip, nodding to the bartender for another drink, one hand going to the side of his head to rub briefly. ]
Right.

If it was just the two of us, it'd be different.
[It's not a question of whether or not Jefferson is worth it. Regina can't hurt Henry, so Emma doesn't have the same thing at stake. It's whether or not she's worth it. He'd have never chosen to be in this situation just to be with her. It's too much.]
no subject
[ He's quick to deflect, even now. Maybe that's just who he is regardless, burying this stuff away where no one can see. It had been all he'd ever done, up until her, but he doesn't know that. Can't know that.
All he knows is that she's trying to be strong about this, so he should try too, right? ]
Except...if the problem's this Regina woman, can't we do something about her? Or is she just too powerful to tangle with?
no subject
[He doesn't quite frame it like that, but Emma gets it. There would be something more upsetting about it if there wasn't any love between a child and the mother who had raised him for ten years of his life.]
Her magic is dark magic, it's stronger than mine. We can't kill her, because we're supposed to be the good guys. And Henry asking her to change hasn't gotten us very far. Or anywhere.
no subject
It's not going to stop him from trying. ]
But why is she doing this? Some sort of self-validating power trip? 'I am the Evil Queen, so I must do evil things'?
no subject
['True love'. It's a stupid way to explain anything, and the words don't come without a little disbelief. Jefferson told her all about how wide-eyed and innocent Regina was back then, but she see it.]
More recently, Mary Margaret was...partially responsible for the death of Regina's mother, Cora.
[She sighs, looking over at the alcohol on the bar. If they're going to get into that conversation, she's not going to be able to walk home.]
Cora was worse than Regina. Way worse. Queen of Hearts, worse. You told me she was the one who -
[And Emma shouldn't, but she reaches over anyway, brushing her fingertips along the scar on his neck for only a second.]
And as for me, I broke the curse. I took my son back. I have my family now, and seeing any of us happy is more than she can stand.
no subject
[ He doesn't know if that makes him feel better or worse, that her yanking the floor out from under him has absolutely nothing to do with him. ]
no subject
[Everything Regina has done, with the one exception being the time she helped them get through the portal. It shouldn't even count, she only did it to win Henry over, but the reason didn't matter if it made it possible for them to get through alive.]
She also left you in Wonderland with no way back to the Enchanted Forest, when Grace was counting on you to come home. And leaving you with your memories before, you said that was worse than forgetting.
[It had to be, given what he had to remember.]
The two of you had some sort of...relationship, when you were younger. I don't have the details, I didn't want them.
no subject
[ And his relationship to this Queen sounds every bit as complicated as the rest. He nods his thanks when the bartender comes around with that third shot. ]
Well if the answer doesn't lie with her, then there has to be someone else in town that's magically inclined.
no subject
[And a pain in the ass to deal with even when he's not as irritable as he's been lately. She would have taken just about anyone else as Henry's grandfather. Literally, anyone.]
The last time you were in trouble, Gold walked me through getting your heart beating again, but it didn't happen the way we were expecting. I don't know enough about magic to just start pushing my luck.
no subject
[ The shot goes back. He's doing it, he's actually taking the concept of magic seriously. Well, if he turns out a fool for it in the end, lesson learned. ]
no subject
[Can anyone blame her for wanting to rush? She wants him back, and she doesn't want Grace to have to spend a long time without him.]
Gold's been insisting that what happened to Belle can't be undone.

But I'll keep trying.

[ He eyes the shot glass, turning it over in his hand. ]
About whether our memories are what make us who we are. If I'm really so different from who I was when I remembered. I almost hope so, given that from the way you tell it, I was kind of shitty person.
[ He squints, glancing sideways at her. Can't say she painted a very flattering portrait, can she? ]
no subject
[She just isn't good at explaining his better traits.]
I don't know what you want me to say.

[ He rubs the back of his neck, fingers playing over that scar. It's become like a fixation, like he's trying to recall through touch. ]
It's not such a weird question, is it? Do the things that happen to us make us, or were we always who we are?
no subject
[He wasn't as bad as he thinks he was. And what he is now is missing way too much.]
no subject
[ The shot glass tips, circling around the scrubbed wood counter under his finger. He's toying with it now, tipping it to rest on one finger before swiveling it about, precise despite his inebriation. Tipsy, but not drunk. Not yet. ]
...I guess it doesn't matter. Since we're going to fix it eventually.

They'd been through so many of the same things that she thought he understood her because of it. Now that connection is gone. He doesn't have any of the memories that hurt him, but everything else went with it. Ten years of his daughter's life.
She crosses her arms against the counter, resting her head for a moment. Just to think. She shouldn't start throwing around accusations. It's been a crappy day.
...Screw it, better to ruin a bad day than a good one.
You don't want to remember, do you?
no subject
[ An eyebrow lifts as he watches her slump against the counter, his fiddling with the shot glass paused. ]
no subject
[She watches a few strands of her hair fly back as she sighs, tilting her head to face him.]
no subject
I'm not fine. At all. None of this is fine. I want to remember the things that are important to me...God knows what I'm missing out on right now.
