[ He rubs the back of his neck, fingers playing over that scar. It's become like a fixation, like he's trying to recall through touch. ]
It's not such a weird question, is it? Do the things that happen to us make us, or were we always who we are?
no subject
[He wasn't as bad as he thinks he was. And what he is now is missing way too much.]

[ The shot glass tips, circling around the scrubbed wood counter under his finger. He's toying with it now, tipping it to rest on one finger before swiveling it about, precise despite his inebriation. Tipsy, but not drunk. Not yet. ]
...I guess it doesn't matter. Since we're going to fix it eventually.

They'd been through so many of the same things that she thought he understood her because of it. Now that connection is gone. He doesn't have any of the memories that hurt him, but everything else went with it. Ten years of his daughter's life.
She crosses her arms against the counter, resting her head for a moment. Just to think. She shouldn't start throwing around accusations. It's been a crappy day.
...Screw it, better to ruin a bad day than a good one.
You don't want to remember, do you?

[ An eyebrow lifts as he watches her slump against the counter, his fiddling with the shot glass paused. ]

[She watches a few strands of her hair fly back as she sighs, tilting her head to face him.]

I'm not fine. At all. None of this is fine. I want to remember the things that are important to me...God knows what I'm missing out on right now.

[Complicated. He was complicated. Haven't they used that word a million times today? Shouldn't it mean something by now?]

And you thought that when Regina found that out, she might not use the apple on me.

[ He reaches over, into her space, a hand coming to rest on her arm. ]
I want this back. I want who I was back.

[Her eyes fall on his hand, and she's tempted to reach for it. That's just too much, probably too soon. She doesn't actually know how weird this is for him, so she's going to continue to be cautious.]
Henry has this idea of what the good guys are supposed to be like. I'm pretty sure it goes along with the fairies idea of selfless, brave, and true. And that's an impossible life to live. You've made mistakes, but you've learned from them. Since the curse ended, you've been there for me every time I've needed you. And you should hear Grace talk, because that says it all.

[ His lower lip gets bitten as he tries for a wry smile, brow furrowing. ]
You wouldn't look so miserable if that person wasn't someone worth missing.

[Maybe this version of Jefferson won't pick up on her bullshit as easily? Who the hell knows anymore.]
And I'm not your girlfriend, so don't start getting ideas.

[Which let's face it, he never did before. He knew better then, and now he just sees her missing him.]

[ He shrugs mildly, gesturing behind him to the door. ]
You, the doctor, and that little girl are all I have to go on, if I want any sort of answers. And the doctor kind of freaks me out, to be honest.
no subject
[Maybe that was why Jefferson was usually the one defending him.
And if he's wondering if Emma really is drunk, the fact that she looks back at the door like there's something to see might remind him that yes, she has put away more than her share of drinks tonight.]
Grace - you need to get used to calling her by her name.
no subject
[ He smiles a little at that, turning his attention back to the shot glass. ]
Wonder if she was born on a Tuesday. You know the rhyme I'm talking about, right?
no subject
[And so does he, but not the day his daughter was born on. She drags her teeth against her lower lip before finally deciding to straighten up.]
I shouldn't have had that last beer.
no subject
[ Fitting, as he's going to go visit one. ]
You going to be alright?
no subject
[She's already planning on sending David down to the station before her. That's what parents are for, right?]
