"To see your face," he flashes a quick smile. "But also... to ask– why would I ever wanna tell you to go away? Hmm?" he reaches up to brush his thumb gently across Steve's jaw.

"Me being around has never exactly brought peace and quiet to your life," he says softly even as he turns and leans into Bucky's hand. "I would understand if you wanted a farm somewhere in the middle of nowhere like Clint."

Where Steve would visit occasionally but it wouldn't be like before. It wouldn't stress Bucky's mind any. He wouldn't have to worry about accidentally hurting anyone.

"I bring trouble with me wherever I go." And sometimes Steve starts that trouble. It's just who he is.

A kaleidoscope of butterflies flutters in his stomach when Steve leans into him that way. God, he loves him. Loves him so much it aches.

"Wouldn't change it for a thing." If it meant giving up Steve, Bucky isn't sure he could do it.

He nods a little, "Yeah, who you tellin'?" he chuckles lightly. "But I'm kinda crazy like that... " his gaze drifts involuntarily down to Steve's lips, "Plus, I like the chaos," he whispers softly, tucking. his lower lip between his teeth.

"That's a lie," he says with a fond laugh, still leaning to Bucky's palm. "Don't do anything stupid, that's what you always told me every time you went anywhere. You sure you don't want me to settle down?"

And every time Bucky went away Steve somehow found something stupid to do. Like let himself be experimented on by the Army. Like crash a plane in the arctic. Like destroy the entire organization he worked for.

Steve's real bad at keeping away from stupid when he didn't have Bucky around to be his voice of reason.

He cups his hand around Steve's face, thumb sliding gently over his cheek. "'Cuz how the hell was I gonna stop ya when I wasn't around?"

"No... I wouldn't change you for the world," he shakes his head, letting his hand fall, resting flat above Steve's heart against his chest. "This is my favorite part of you. Nobody's got a heart like you," he murmurs softly, a smile spreading across his lips.

Steve rests his hand over Bucky's. Yeah, he definitely feels better. Steve can't be Captain America without being himself. That's why he was chosen for Project Rebirth. Of course it was the only person who really knew him who reminded him of that.

"Yeah, well, you're good at reminding me of that," Steve says as he laces his fingers through Bucky's because he can. "You're the one that knows it best."

No one else knew who Steve was before Captain America.

“Somebody’s gotta,” he murmurs, closing his fingers around Steve’s in return, “may as well be me,” he smirks. Bucky is probably the person that knows him best, and it’s nice to have that confirmed from the other side still, too.

He settles a his cheek against Steve’s heartbeat and listens to the sound of it. Silence passes comfortably between them as seconds tick by, but eventually a half-mumbled statement comes from him, “I could stay right here the rest of the night, just like this…”

"You're gonna have to. We've only got the one bed." Steve doesn't mind. He's not tiny anymore. They don't have to worry about his breathing or pressure against his heart. Those are the old days and they're long gone. Steve can handle being used as a pillow.

He closes his eyes for a minute and then chuckles. "But someone's gonna have to get up to turn off the lights."

Because those were still on from Steve reading and Bucky writing in his journal. They wouldn't get a great night of sleep with those going the whole night. Not that Steve wants to get up. It's really nice lying here like this. Probably should relax more than he does back in New York. Probably shouldn't put so much on his own shoulders. There's a lot of probably's in his life.

The bed's not that small, but Bucky doesn't bother pointing that out. If Steve is fine with it, he has absolutely no reason or motivation to move.

Except maybe that.

The doom of reality Steve just bestowed upon them earns a soft groan. "I'm closer, I'll get it," he grumbles playfully, but regretfully pulls himself up to switch out the light.

The disruption in the laze about gives them time to get more comfortably situated, too. Blankets pulled back to crawl under, pillows yanked down so they aren't against the headboard.

Since Bucky gets the lights Steve takes the time to turn the bed down and make it comfortable for them to crawl under. He tosses the extra pillows off the bed because hotels always give too many in Steve's opinion.

He stretches out on his back again so there's plenty of room for Bucky to rest on him. If that's what he wants and he wasn't just teasing about that whole stay there all night thing.

It's hard to say. They've always been physical with each other.

He definitely wasn’t kidding and that’s perfectly obvious as he climbs back into bed and immediately settles right back where he was. He drapes an arm loosely across Steve’s middle, curling against him and resting his head on his chest.

Of course, now that they’re actually settling down for sleep, his mind won’t calm down. It’s nothing in particular buzzing through his mind, just noise. Just static. It puts his chest in a vice grip and his fingers tap a nonsensical pattern lightly against Steve’s chest. Anxious energy seeking release.

It's pretty easy to tell something's going on with Bucky. He's tense against Steve's chest which is wildly different from just a few minutes ago. It's probably not the dark. He's never seen Bucky bothered by it before and they've slept in plenty of darkened hotel rooms while on the road.

There is one thing that always works. Steve gently drapes his arm over Bucky's shoulders, making sure to broadcast his intentions so he doesn't startle him. Sometimes, Bucky gets... skittish is the best way Steve can think to describe it. There's no source for the fear but it takes a hold and keeps Bucky on edge. Steve hates it.

He buries his fingers in his hair and starts massaging the back of his head, fingers slow with just a little pressure. It's worked in the past to get Bucky to relax and settle down.

He focuses on the steady thud under his ear, trying to time his breaths with the slow, even one’s Steve is taking.

Skittish is a good word for it. Bucky isn’t sure where it comes from sometimes, but as long as he can still breathe, he can deal with it. It’s when the breath is choked from him that really bothers him.

His eyes drift shut at the fingers in his hair. He lets out a slow breath and takes another one in. It takes a moment or two for it to ease, but it does. “Thanks,” he murmurs softly.

"Buck, I'd do anything for you, you know that right?" Steve asks into the dark and silence.

He has to know that, right? Steve is pretty sure he does but it's not like looking after Bucky is a hardship that he needs to be thanked for. This is how it's always been though Steve couldn't always return the favor when he was a skinny nothing.

Fingers in his hair. Being used as a pillow. It's second nature. It's comforting for Steve too. He can help just a little bit and make things easier for Bucky in a small way.

He shifts to prop his chin on folded arms against Steve, so he can face him more properly. Bucky is pretty much laying half on top of him at this point. "You're in the middle of a crazy cross-country road trip with me."

Beat.

"'Course I know that, ya goob."

"Okay, good." Steve is quiet for a beat, admiring Bucky's face in the sharp shadows of the low lights.

He probably should've been a movie star with looks like his. Somehow, he had ended up working the docks instead and then the Army. Bucky deserved a better life than what he got handed to him.

"You don't have to thank me for doing little things. I want to." His fingers are still carding through Bucky's hair, slow and gentle.

The smile that slips across his face is softer at the edges than the usual rakish grin he defaults to.

"What?" he shifts a little under that scrutiny, maybe a little nervous but not uncomfortable. He knows Steve draws him sometimes. He isn't sure if Steve realizes he knows that.

He shrugs a little at that. "How else am I supposed to let you know I appreciate it?" Because he does. More than he knows how to explain with words. But he'd like to at least try.

Of course Steve draws him. He can draw Bucky's face from memory. He could draw him deaf, dumb, and blind. Sometimes he draws Bucky when he doesn't know what else to draw but he wants to draw something.

"I know you do because you do the same for me," Steve says gently because he realizes he's made Bucky nervous. "And you let me even when you're feeling rattled. That's all the thanks I need."

As long as he gets to stick around even when Bucky's struggling, that's all that matters.

It's not really a bad thing, it's an almost giddy kind of nerves. Butterflies in stomachs and all that.

"Counterpoint," he lifts a finger to point toward Steve. "Maybe I just want to say so. Is that such a bad thing?" Sometimes, Steve is the only person he can talk to at all.

"As long as you don't feel obligated." Steve almost rolls his eyes at Bucky's counterpoint. It's great to see his sarcastic side back but was it really necessary right now.

He tugs a little on Bucky's hair because he's being a smart ass.

"You jerk." Which he says with no real heat and mostly fond amusement. Mostly.

"Learn to take a compliment, Rogers," he chuckles lightly, scrunching his nose a little.

Bucky's lower lip finds its way between his teeth when Steve tugs on his hair like that. He grins around it at that next comment. "But for some reason, you insist on keeping me around," his tone is light and playful in a way he doesn't get to be very often. Or perhaps it's more apt to say he doesn't allow himself to be very often.

"No one else would put up with me," he says dryly.

Does he believe that? Only sometimes in his darker moments. Mostly, though, Steve knows he has incredible friends who would stand by him through thick and thin. They put up with his dangerous antics and steadfast beliefs.

"It's a full time job keeping my ass out of trouble. Who wants to do that much work?" He's teasing, of course. Sam's stuck by him. Nat too. He's got great friends.

None are Bucky, though.

That earns an amused snort of a laugh. "I've known you this long, I guess I'll keep you, too." he's absolutely beaming as he says it, but he isn't sure how much of it Steve can really see in the darkness of the room.

"Is it really work when I want to do it...?" he squints up at him. "But you're right," he purses his lips and nods a little. "It is a full-time job." Steve was always getting his hands into something or other.

His hands. His fists. Himself. One of these days Nat's going to tell him all the stupid, reckless things Steve did during their missions together while working for SHIELD.

"For a guy set on going to bed you sure do talk a lot of shit," he says with a playful shove at Bucky's shoulder like he's going push him off his chest. He pushes right against Bucky's metal arm, not the least bit shy about touching it.

He doesn't think Bucky will mind that Steve treats him like normal. Except for their arguments about Hydra, he really tries to treat him the same as before or close to it.

For the most part, Bucky isn't as self-conscious as he used to be about the metal arm. It's easier if he just thinks of it as a prosthetic. Yes, that's technically what it is and always has been, but there's a distinct sense of 'you are a weapon' attached to it, too. He's working on separating that feeling from his left arm.

"Well, maybe I'm not going to bed now," he challenges, eyebrows arched in kind. "maybe I'd rather bug you. It's more fun than sleep," a statement that is not actually so far from the truth. Sleep has no less than a 50 percent chance of ending in a nightmare, which is pretty much the furthest opposite of 'fun' you could get.
