[Eva has never pried into the details of her sister's job given it's nature and all. Who wanted to be pried for the details of a rough job? Now and then tidbits would spill forth over family dinners or the occasional coffee meetup but there's was a sort of silent pact between them both that what was volunteered was what was discussed and they were there to decompress.
So color Eva more than a little surprised when Traci came to her with a request that on the surface was simplistic enough.]
We've got this case going on right now ... it's rough, Eva. Real rough. I can't go into details but we have a client that can't go home quite yet. We're arranging things but until the case is finished here in a few weeks our hands are sort of tied. I think some of her family is making the trip here thought but it would be nice if she could stay with someone with some clinical knowledge.
[Ah. Eva had gotten what Traci meant near instantly. The client needed some peace and quiet to sort through their thoughts and emotions and any foster families they had might be too bustling for that. Putting them up in a hotel or something just seemed cruel too.
So with Eva's ready agreement she soon found herself playing host. She'd switched around the spare bedroom she called her office, culled just a few of the many potted plants that had called it home and gives a sheepish laugh the first time she brings Luisa home with her.]
Don't be afraid to move any of the plants around. I'm rearranging things a little since I've filled the balcony up a little too much.
[She isn't lying about that either. There's an ivy plant clinging around the window in the kitchen of her apartment and a hibiscus plant in full bloom that looks like it was recently transplanted into it's pot.]

[ The past few...Luisa doesn't even really know how long it's been anymore, everything has been a bit of blur for her. All she really knows is that it's been too long, and she just really wanted to go home.
And some part of her does feel bad, for being a bit ungrateful to the people who have been helping her so far since this all happened. But they were also the ones telling her that she couldn't go home yet, which was frustrating. There were reasons, they'd said, but it didn't seem like they were quite telling her everything. She didn't really know what was going on, but she missed her family and her home, and she wasn't sure how much longer it would be until she could see them again.
So when she was sent to stay with someone, she was more than a little morose. ]
...Thank you.
[ She still wanted to be polite, but this just...isn't where she wanted to be. ]

We'll just be together for a few weeks before your family gets here but just so you know, my door is always open. I'll listen to whatever you want to say but you don't have to say a thing if you don't want to.
[And with that it seems like Eva is going to set aside any sort of would-be counseling for sort of acting like Luisa has always been around. She can only imagine the teenager's been prodded enough during the course of the investigation so it's probably better to simply give her the option of talking without the pressing need to do so.
Eva rattles around the fridge a moment to draw out a jug of tea as she adds:]
It's usually pretty quiet here to be honest. Unless my nephew is here anyhow. Now he'll do all your talking, his talking and then some.
no subject
She is grateful that the woman isn't trying to pry, though, and it does help her warm up to Eva a little bit. As she talks about her nephew, Luisa can't help a faint smile. ]
...kind of sounds like my cousin.
[ The reminder is both comforting and a bit painful, as she thinks back to the family she's so desperately missing. But the image of her funny, talkative cousin does help a little bit too. ]
no subject
I guess every family has at least one. They have a favorite topic? Jamie's favorite thing at the moment is weird animals. That kid knows way more facts about the platypus than anyone has any right to.
[The way Eva says it is full of fondness. She's had six years of the kid after all and Traci claimed he was as much Eva's child as he was hers. Eva brings out glasses as she talks and then offers Luisa one just to see if she wants it before she pours her own. It doesn't seem to bother the older woman if the drink isn't accepted.]
no subject
[ Just a little, though, in that way that families teased each other. ]
My other cousin really loves animals, though. He can -
[ She pauses, wincing a bit before glancing down at her hands. She'd learned recently - unfortunately - that talking about their gifts could actually lead to trouble sometimes. ]

Ah the eternal struggle between family. I never made my sister's life very easy either.
[The cut off in her words, the ensuing silence -- yeah. It mulls Eva's expression just a touch, not in a pitying way but it never ceased to astound her how casually and deliberately cruel other people could be. Seeing it over and over again in the memories of patients was one thing but in real life to someone so young?
She takes in a breath momentarily, takes up her glass and gestures so the pair of them can plop down on her overstuffed and thoroughly beaten into comfy submission sofa.]
So you've got one who teases and one who likes animals, hm? Sounds like you've got a big family there.
no subject
Then again, she has had to relearn how much trust she can really give to others. ]
...yeah. There, uh...There are twelve of us living together.
no subject
[Eva laughs a little gently.]
I wanted a big family like that when I was younger.
[She sounds a little wistful there.]
You're the first person I've admitted that to, you know?
no subject
[ The admission has her glancing up at Eva again, and she tilts her head curiously. ]
Really?
no subject
[She does a remarkably good impersonation of her sister by the by.]
"This is why I keep trying to set you up with someone, Eva! Why are you so difficult about this!"
[As Eva winds down on her performance she huffs out a bigger laugh, sinking back into the sofa.]
She means well but the last thing I needed was her hounding me more.
no subject
…You don’t…want to get married?
[ She doesn’t mean anything by it, she’s just genuinely curious. ]
no subject
Oh. Well... yeah. To the right person anyhow.
[She wasn't one to blush often but yep, there she goes, she can feel it. The mild surprise is quickly replaced with a light grin even as the flush persists.]
Just I'm not sure my sister's idea of "the right person" is my idea, you know?
[It does peak her curiosity though that Luisa tripped right onto marriage. Maybe it was on her mind?]
How about you? You want to get married some day?
no subject
So when Eva asks her that, she sort of expects it, but she still hesitates for a moment before shrugging. ]
I mean, I’d like to get married someday. I think it’d be nice, but… [ She looks down at her hands, fingers curled in the fabric of her skirt. ] I’m not really…expecting it to happen.
no subject
Eva looked away for a moment, mulling over her words. Then she nodded gently.]
I get it. I think that way now too.
[But Eva was creeping into her thirties now. Not that marriage didn't happen after that age but it was a little more difficult in some ways. Luisa though... her tone lightens some.]
Someone just right for you and me both could be right around the corner. That probably sounds overly optimistic but you never know.
[She snorts just a little.]
The most loving couple I know are a pair of my coworkers -- Dr. Taima McMillan and her husband Dr. Willis McMillan. They're pushing seventy or so now and they're practically attached at the hip.
no subject
[ The smile fades again though as she shakes her head. ] But there aren’t many guys who’d be interested in…a girl like me.
no subject
Luisa's reply surprises her though. Two for two today, Neil would be envious!]
What, really? You sure the guys around you have good taste?
[It's a healthy portion of incredulous that colors Eva's tone.]
no subject
And guys don’t really want a girl who’s…stronger than they are.
[ Despite the people in town appreciating her gift, not many men would want to live with that all the time. ]
no subject
I think in the end the guy you really want will accept all those things about you that even you have a hard time accepting. That's just what real love is in the end, acceptance.
[Eva winces just a little, maybe in just a hint of embarrassment.]
That's sounds pretty cheesy though, I know.
no subject
But the other woman’s words still brought a small smile to her face. ]
…like a fairy tale.
[ It is a nice thought. To find someone who could love and accept her, no matter what. It’s hard to believe that it could really happen most of the time…but there maybe there is still a part of her that never really grows out of stories like that. ]
no subject
I guess you see what I'm still single now, hm?
no subject
N-No, it's...I mean, it's nice. I don't...think there's anything wrong with waiting for the right person.
no subject
Yeah, I understand. Sorry, I could just hear one of my coworkers in my head. You put it a lot nicer than he would, hahaha.
[She takes a bit of a chance, reaching over to gently pat the other woman's shoulder.]
There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. You've got to decide for yourself what it is you want like that in a lot of things. Don't be too shocked if what you want changes over time though.
no subject
Yeah, I guess that's true. I think it's...tough sometimes, though. Trying to figure out what you want or need. Sometimes you don't always really know.
no subject
[Eva's expression mulls into something extremely wistful.]
I don't think you ever find complete fulfillment in your life though. What you wanted, what you ended up with -- you always sort of end up yearning for whatever you didn't have in the end. So when you look back on it all, maybe the best you can hope for is to be content with the journey you had.
[... Okay, gosh, this poor woman. Eva blinks a time or two, realizes she sort of started philosophizing here.]
