Well I do know where you live...

[ Giving her a wink to let her know he was teasing and getting back to his feet. ]

So to what do I owe the pleasure of the Sleeping Beauty wake up call?

[She doesn't have time to laugh at the (probably) joke, because he asked a question and her answer required her to pull the large box from behind her back and present it to him. Just like that. No further explanation other than:]

Happy Birthday, Princess.

[ Jack stood blinking at the gift, hands coming up to the side of the box more out of automatic gesture than anything. ]

Happy... birthday?

[ a beat ]

Princess?!

[She laughs]

Hey, you're the one who made the Sleeping Beauty comparison.

Hmph.

[ Then, completely unironically, he raises the box to the side of his head and shakes it. Yes, he's that much of a kid. ]

[Good thing she didn't think to get him anything breakable. Whatever he hears in there is going to be light and practically noiseless.]

You're welcome to guess if you want, but I'm not giving any hints.

Awww no fun. Should we go somewhere and sit down rather than you standing in the snow though?

[ He didn't mind, but it would be hard to unwrap the gift properly just standing around anyway. ]

[A nod in agreement, and she deliberately leads him down one of the less-traveled pathways. Evident by the significantly fewer number of footprints in the snow. One of the few downsides to being together was that she had to be careful in public. Anyone who couldn't see Jack would think she was talking to herself. And that the box in his hands was floating of its own volition.]

[All the benches were covered still, but there was a partial wall along the sidewalk a few minutes down that had been uncovered due to the mix of wind and sun. It wasn't very wide, but it was only a few feet in height. Perfect for sitting.]

[ Jack hops up and sits on the wall, crossing his legs and setting the present in his lap. He began unwrapping the box, being almost absurdly careful with the paper. ]

[Considering he had been shaking the box only moments before, it was comical how careful he was suddenly being.]

[When he eventually does make it past the tissue paper, he'll find a lovely Sky and Navy Blue thermal scarf inside. It would match his usual outfit perfectly, and be more resistant to frosting over.]

[ Jack pulls it out, an excited look spreading over his face. He rubs his fingers on the material, testing it out. ]

This is nice! It feels different, but soft.

[ He started wrapping it around himself. ]

Of course it feels different.

You've worn the exact same thing ever since I've met you. [Most likely long before then.]

Because it's comfortable, that's all.

[ He's experimenting with different ways of wrapping it, trying to find which one looks best, then he glances back up at Zatanna. ]

But why is it a birthday present...?

[She'll give him a few moments before stepping in. After all the bowties she'd straightened as a child, it had almost become a second nature for her to analyze men and boy's neckware. And, right now, Jack's was...in need of straightening.]

Because it's the First Day of Winter. Duh.

[ Jack wisely lets her fix him up without attempting any "help". ]

Oh... right.

[Her fingers are warm against his skin, of course, even though she's been walking around without gloves. Despite the snow, the temperature was in the upper 30s by that time of day. She insisted she didn't need them.]

Anything special planned for today?

[She asks, already knowing he most likely didn't. Because she was the one who had decided it would be his birthday. Without telling him. Surprise?]

[ As expected, he shakes his head. Honestly he was probably just going to nap for a while, but this was way more interesting. ]

What about you?

Dad's out of town for a three-day tour.

[For some teens, this could've been interpreted as strongly suggesting towards something. For Zatanna, it mostly meant she was without a curfew for three days, and was free to do whatever she liked, with whoever she liked.]

[ A bright grin broke out and he bounced in his seat on the wall. ]

Can I come over?

[Jack, are you seriously bouncing in excitement?]

Now, or did you want to do something else first?

No, I want to enjoy this new scarf first. Let's go for a walk!

[ Even though he doesn't actually need it whether he's inside or outside. ]

[She smiles. They had all the time in the world right then, so she lightly kicks her feet in the air for a moment, winding up, before pushing herself off the wall and down to the ground. The landing was less than a foot below, but she still nailed it gracefully.]

[Hold your applause]

[ Jack hops back to his feet but strolls along the edge of the wall instead. ]

Hmmm, so many choices! There's a Winter Carnival over in Lake George.

You realize Lake George is over four hours away, don't you?
