→ Not that you need a commercialized excuse to butter up your sweetheart, but if the heart-decorated chocolate truffle fits...

→ You didn't forget ~~this year~~! But seeing as how it only comes once a year, you'd better make it fantastic ~~or you'll be sleeping on the couch... again :(~~

Of course it feels different.

You've worn the exact same thing ever since I've met you. [Most likely long before then.]

Because it's comfortable, that's all.

[ He's experimenting with different ways of wrapping it, trying to find which one looks best, then he glances back up at Zatanna. ]

But why is it a birthday present...?

[She'll give him a few moments before stepping in. After all the bowties she'd straightened as a child, it had almost become a second nature for her to analyze men and boy's neckware. And, right now, Jack's was...in need of straightening.]

Because it's the First Day of Winter. Duh.

[ Jack wisely lets her fix him up without attempting any "help". ]

Oh... right.

[Her fingers are warm against his skin, of course, even though she's been walking around without gloves. Despite the snow, the temperature was in the upper 30s by that time of day. She insisted she didn't need them.]

Anything special planned for today?

[She asks, already knowing he most likely didn't. Because she was the one who had decided it would be his birthday. Without telling him. Surprise?]

[ As expected, he shakes his head. Honestly he was probably just going to nap for a while, but this was way more interesting. ]

What about you?

Dad's out of town for a three-day tour.

[For some teens, this could've been interpreted as strongly suggesting towards something. For Zatanna, it mostly meant she was without a curfew for three days, and was free to do whatever she liked, with whoever she liked.]

[ A bright grin broke out and he bounced in his seat on the wall. ]

Can I come over?

[Jack, are you seriously bouncing in excitement?]

Now, or did you want to do something else first?

No, I want to enjoy this new scarf first. Let's go for a walk!

[ Even though he doesn't actually need it whether he's inside or outside. ]

[She smiles. They had all the time in the world right then, so she lightly kicks her feet in the air for a moment, winding up, before pushing herself off the wall and down to the ground. The landing was less than a foot below, but she still nailed it gracefully.]

[Hold your applause]

[ Jack hops back to his feet but strolls along the edge of the wall instead. ]

Hmmm, so many choices! There's a Winter Carnival over in Lake George.

You realize Lake George is over four hours away, don't you?

[By car, that was. Like either of them needed a car.]

[ smirking ]

Are you saying you're slow?

Absolutely not.

I was just worried you might get tired having to travel that far. You know, you basically being an old man and all.

[You knew she was getting more comfortable with the (significant) age gap when she could casually joke about it.]

So does that mean you want to go?

[Laughing, she leans forward just enough to place a feathery-light kiss on the corner of his lips. Whispering:]

What do you think, birthday boy?

[ He responds by giving her a quick nuzzle with the tip of his nose. ]

Best birthday ever.

[Laughter as the coldness of his nose tickled hers; when she pulled back, she had to rub her face a little to warm it back up. Her cheeks were slightly flushed, and she thought--not for the first time--what a strange relationships they actually had. It was so different from any she'd ever had before.]

[She wouldn't trade it for anything.]

Whose driving this time? You or me?

Who said anything about driving? North gave me a new type of snowglobe to test out.

[Her eyes lit up. She loved the snowglobe means of traveling. It was rare she ever had the chance to, making this moment so much more special.]

Okay, Jack, be honest. Did he give it to you, or did you "borrow" one from his shop.

[Though the "test" part made her suspect that, for once, it was the former.]

[ He pretends to be insulted at the question, but he's grinning too widely to really pull the look off. He pulls out a snow globe that's much smaller than the ones normally used, about the size of a large marble and offers it to her. ]

He's been trying to make them smaller so we can't use the excuse of not carrying any.

Would you like to do the honours?

[Yeah, don't even try that look on her, Jack.]

[She nods eagerly, accepting the tiny globe in her hands. Taking a moment to run her finger over the smooth, glassy surface. Once she was satisfied, she knelt down and rolled it across the sidewalk. It made it all of five feet before the magic took hold, enlarging into a portal easily large enough for the two of them.]
