[Ben had been living in Ogunquit, Maine for as long as he could remember. The foster system was better here, probably because the town was so small. The family he had been placed with was kind, gentle, but older, so he was their last foster child.

For as long as he could remember, there was the phrase 'sé genial, Cassian, puedes hacer esto' tattooed on his side. His foster mother had explained that those were the first words that your soul mate ever said to you. And they would have the first words he said to them on them somewhere.

But there were no Spanish speakers in this little town. There wasn't even a thousand people who lived here. Everyone knew everyone. No one locked their doors.

After high school, he went to a good University, but ended up moving back to the little town and working in the local hardware store. Not for lack of opportunities, but because he was worried he'd miss his soulmate. It was with the urging of one of his friends that he finally decided to do something.

So he took a vacation to Mexico City. Partially because of what was on him, but also too he had always wanted to visit. He had been in the city for three days when he walked into this little restaurant he had heard the locals raving out. Ben was a little surprised at the whispers when he walked in. Were foreigners not common in this area?]

[Nearly. He remembers how to hold a sword, and that he can make a potion that will heal his wounds if he has strong spirits, celandine, and drowner brains. He remembers that if he folds his hands into particular shapes, he can make fire or send a man flying into the air or protect himself from harm. He remembers a whole bestiary's worth of information on monsters and beasts, almost encyclopedic knowledge of where they live, how they hunt, and how to kill them.]

[He didn't know his own name until the mage told him. He still doesn't know where he came from or why he knows how to kill a striga or why he doesn't know a godsdamned personal thing about himself. Aiden had asked, once, about why he's missing an eye, and the mage-- Corinthus-- had told him that he'd lost it in a fight, and nothing more.]

[So the sum of his knowledge is thus: his name is Aiden, he is a man who knows how to kill almost anything that walks under the sun, and he uses those skills to kill for Corinthus because there is no other option for him.]

[Oh, and one more thing-- there is a mark on his skin just above the crest of his right hip. Corinthus told him that it meant nothing, that it's nothing more than a mark, but Aiden presses his fingers into the lines sometimes and feels like there's more to it than that. Something that itches at his brain that he can't quite manage to reach.]

[It doesn't matter for now, though. Right now, Aiden is in Novigrad under the mage's orders, compelled to follow them by more obedience spells than he cares to distinguish. There's a rival mage who has a workshop in the city and Corinthus' patience for him has finally run out; Aiden's task is to kill him quietly and retrieve his research materials. He wishes that he could say that this is the first person that Corinthus has commanded him to murder, but the mage has been industrious as of late and thus Aiden has also been kept busy. Three others in near as many months, from various locations across the Continent. They weren't all mages, at least. Mages can be tricky. One of them had been an idiot middling noble who had managed to insult the wrong sorcerer.]

[This mage, though? Not quite so tricky. Aiden has finished his reconnaissance, and this particular sorcerer is a little lax in his security. All that's left is to pick up a few supplies at the marketplace to finish a potion or two-- a task that's made easier because of the little spell that makes his one remaining eye look mundane brown rather than its unnatural slit-pupil gold. And he has to admit, the relishes the freedom that he gets while he's on these jobs, even if he only gets to have it briefly while running minor errands. Once he completes his task tonight, he'll contact the mage and get portaled back to his estate, back to the cage specially-made to keep him.]

[But the day is warm and, for now, Aiden has the semblance of freedom; he leaves the hood of his cloak down while he bargains with the herbalist for hellebore and white myrtle.]

[ Nile doesn't talk about the dreams any more. It's obvious that thinking about Quynh only hurts Andy, who was struggling enough without the constant reminder. As patient and comforting as Joe and Nicky have been, Nile knows that they loved her, too. That as helpless as she feels, they've been feeling that way for longer than she can imagine. That they're both more afraid of ending up like Andy than they are of ending up like Quynh.

So she keeps it to herself. And when Nile wakes up in the middle of the night, choking on air with the taste of salt on her tongue, she tries to take solace in the idea that even though Quynh's suffering was impossibly deep - profound in ways that are incomprehensible - maybe she wasn't suffering entirely alone.

After a while, much less time than Nile expected, the dreams lessened. Shifted, somehow. Gotten sunnier. She was sleeping more soundly, but she didn't have an explanation. Maybe she just stopped dreaming of Quynh altogether. The one person who might know, she wasn't allowed to ask.

Nile put it out of her mind. As of today she hadn't even thought about it for more than a week. That is, until she got back from her run and saw the woman standing outside of the safe house. Nile fumbled the water bottle in her hand until it slipped to the ground. ]

It's you. You're... you're her.
