Stephanie grunted as she made her way to Harleen’s home. Study date with one of the more flightiest girls around. It wasn’t that bad, even if the term seemed silly. She hoped that the night would be quiet, but she had taken her duffel bag holding her Batgirl costume inside it just in case, the weight just a little too much with it and her books inside.
Making it to the door, she knocked on it, hoping she was home. “Harleen? It’s Steph!”
As the door opened there was an explosion of noise. Boys fighting in the background, an angry accented mother screaming for order and Harleen already red faced and humiliated looking as she greeted Steph.
"I promise it's quiter in my room!" She had to shout to be heard as it sounded like the eldest of the three boys in the living room was fighting with the youngest while the middle one was just shouting for them to be quiet. Harley ushered Stephanie upstairs and tried to keep her from seeing the messy state of her family home. It was clearly the kind of two story house that wasn't meant for a family of six but they were making due.
Harley's room was surprisingly girly given the girls reputation at school for being a loud mouthed weirdo. But there was lots of pink and plush toys, shelves stuffed with complicated books about criminals and psychology, and more then a few superhero posters on the walls including Wonder Woman and Batgirl. As she promised once the door was closed it was much quieter.
"Sorry...we shoulda done this at the library or something. I'm sorry." Harleen fumbled with her glasses cleaning them absent mindedly on her shirt. "I was hoping they wouldn't be here."
Stephanie couldn’t help but grin at how Harleen’s room looked. It was such a 180 with how she acted at school. However, seeing how her family was, it certainly made sense.
“Hey, don’t be. I’m just glad we could do this.” She admitted. Dropping the duffel bag, she approached Harleen and hugged her reassuringly.
Harleen accepted the hug but went stiff at first, slowly bringing her arms around Steph and then squeezing probably too hard. She didn't have a lot of friends to begin with so casual physical contact was completely unheard of.
If her face wasn't red before it was glowing now and as the hug lingered probably a little too long, she couldn't help but take in a breath through her nose.
"H-heh...you smell nice." she commented awkwardly.
That was enough to make Harleen squeak and jump back bailing out of the hug and laughing sheepishly.
"Y-yeah I mean my Ma and Dad of course but that doesn't count I mean like...you know I'm not the most popular girl...honestly I don't know why you like me but I'm super glad you do it's like...you're the coolest friend I have." Which was sad on a few levels but Harleen didn't seem to think faster then her mouth moved.
"I dunno why, you're smart, you're hot you're...looking at your bag like your vibrator is going off..." Harleen looked curious and then a little mischievous and sprang for the bag to see for herself if her joke was more truthful.
"I know it ain't your cellphone because that's in your back pocket...not that I was looking at your butt while you went up the stairs..."
That was enough to make Harleen stop from opening the back and grin sheepishly.
"W-well I was just...I mean yeah...it's really nice and like...it looks like you work out a lot...and it was right there in front of me and like...yes?"
"Right yeah you gotta bail." Harleen sighed and unzipped the bag reaching inside for whatever was vibrating."
"But can you come back? Or is this one of those "We'll talk about it tomorrow" sort of things? Because I'm a big girl I can take it!"
She in fact could not take the rejection well and would probably be very upset if she didn't find out what was going on. But Steph might not have sussed that out yet.
There was a moment of genuine confusion...then Harley's eyes widened and she looked to the poster on her wall of Batgirl standing on a gargoyle.
She held the belt up to the poster confirming it was the same one, then in a flash turned around, wrapped it around Steph's waist and pushed her in front of the poster comparing the two.
Ohmigod. Ohmigod. Secret’s out. Harleen knows who she is now. She’s screwed. She really doesn’t have much of a choice in lies here. It’s too good to be cosplay and the fact she was sized up like that.
Harleen was practically buzzing with excitement "How long have you been Batgirl?! Does Batman like you? Do you know the other Batgirls? What's Robin really like? Oh my god no wait answer your belt!!!"
Somewhere in the explosion of questions the belt buzzed again and the sensible part of Harleen's brain kicked into gear causing her to yelp and throw the belt at Stephanie jumping back as if it might explode.
Stephanie caught her belt and pulled out the device, noticing messages from others of a crime in progress. It’s nearby, something she can take care of quickly, which she responds to.
“Give me thirty minutes and I’ll answer your questions, I promise.” Stephanie said, nodding. “Meet me on the roof.”
Harleen hesitated in responding, not wanting such an opportunity to just slip away, but her heart won out over her curiosity and she nodded.
"OK. I'll be a good girl. You go save the day but don't make me wait all night OK?"
And then to seal the promise Harleen went up on her toes to plant a kiss right on Steph's lips. She tasted faintly of cotton candy lip gloss and sugary soda.
Steph was speechless as she was kissed, the taste almost intoxicating. She briefly returned the kiss before pulling away.
“I won’t keep you long.” She said, smiling. Grabbing her bag, she would slip into the bathroom to change, the bag and her clothes left behind.
It would be an hour and a half before Steph returned, landing on the roof of Harleen’s home. “Harleen?” She uttered, wondering if she had come up here.
"You know, most people don't have easy access to their own roof."
Harleen was there with a blanket spread out to sit on, in her PJs which were pink with unicorns on them. She also had a bag of oreo's she'd swiped from the kitchen and offered them to the superhero trying not to look like her face was about to split in half for how big she was grinning.
An honest to goodness superhero! And she had kissed her!
"Oh shut up." Harley rolled her eyes and produced a thermos full of milk which she poured into a cup for Steph to dip her cookies in before taking some more for herself.
"You're a superhero! The whole secret identity thing is part of the deal right? And it's not like we're girlfriends or anything...I mean...not yet..." She fumbled over the last part and stiffened realizing she'd probably been just a bit too honest just then.
"A-all I'm sayin' is, if anyone understands how important what you do is, it's the freak girl with an obsession for extreme personalities in psychology."
Harleen coughed and sputtered on her cookie at Steph's calling her out, making her face so red it almost seemed to glow in the moonlight.
"Y-yeah I mean...well I would like to yeah! I woulda wanted to do stuff with ya before I knew you were a superhero but now you're like...I mean look at you. I can't stop looking at you!" She squeaked and clapped her hands over her mouth to keep herself from gushing further about her surging hormones.
