it's all in the cards...
THE TAROT MEME

This meme is pretty basic. You post in, put any specifics you'd like (or not like) in your header and entry, ???, and RP. For the prompts, however, you've got two methods for ideas.
1. LUCK OF THE DRAW! Click here to get a randomly chosen card and use it to prompt your scenario. Utilize the picture, the person in it, the colors: anything you like.
OR
2. CHOOSE YOUR PROMPT! from the list of Major Arcana:
00. The Fool - the beginning of a relationship; one character helping another to avoid a mistake they didn't notice; a character starting a new journey
01. The Magician - a character takes action; a character is putting on a performance for another
02. The High Priestess - characters met in a dream; a character is trusting their intuition and how does the other one feel about that? one character goes to another for guidance
03. The Empress - one character playing mom-friend to another; a character is pregnant
04. The Emperor - one character is playing dad-friend to another; a character is taking charge, one character is being overbearing, a character is trying to get a handle on their life
05. The Hierophant - one character is questioning the status quo; one character is questioning their values; one character is coming to another as someone who knows their business
06. The Lovers - two characters decide to get together, two characters make a choice together, two characters make choices to keep their relationship
07. The Chariot - a character is going on a trip; a character is triumphant; a character wants to GET GOING on something; a character is impatient or headstrong;
08. Strength - a character has to reach into a well of inner strength; a character has to find a work smarter instead of harder; a character has to find a way to deal with their inner conflicts
09. The Hermit - a character has been going off on their own a lot lately; a character has been feeling lonely; a character is doing something on their own and it may be a good idea but it may not
10. The Wheel of Fortune - fate has just thrown the character(s) for a loop; what goes around comes around
11. Justice - a character is facing legal trouble; a character has broken the law and has to deal with the consequences; a character is seeking justice for someone else
12. The Hanged Man - a character is going through a period of self-chosen change; a character is going through a period of reflection; a character knowingly sacrifices themselves for another character willingly
13. Death - character death; a character goes through a painful transition
14. Temperance - characters have to work together to get what they need to be done; character needs to learn moderation; a character needs to chill the hell out
15. The Devil - one character has a hold over the other; one character is bad for the other but they just can't let go; one character is hoarding something/someone even though they know they shouldn't
16. The Tower - a character has a catastrophic change in their life; a character makes a world-shattering decision; a character's whole world came tumbling down so what now?
17. The Star - a character gets their wish; a character gives another hope; a character leads another through the darkness
18. The Moon - a character is deceiving another character; a character is deceiving themselves; a character's mind is clouded; a character is going slowly mad

20. Judgment - a reckoning is at hand for a character; a reckoning is at hand between characters; a character is transitioning from one thing into another
21. The World - a character finds that they've found their place; a character gets some peace and now wonders what's coming next

[ Nico wants to scream. The only thing that stops her from doing so is the thought that if she starts, she might never stop. She does, however, point her Staff at the TV in the shop window, muttering an incantation under her breath -- ] Electrical fault. [ -- and smiling in a strange mix of triumph and relief when the image flickers and disappears. No more "wanted" pictures of her and her friends, at least for now.
They ran away about a week ago now, but what started as a team of sorts has already fragmented and split off in several directions. With how much they've all been through, it's no surprise to her, really. And honestly, Nico would probably rather be by herself... but they all agreed to at least stick with one of the others.
Things are awkward right now with Alex and Karolina both, and so without even really thinking about it, Nico reached for Evie. And now the pair are on the move, trying to keep themselves alive and safe while also trying to investigate the depth of their parents' crimes. The more they know, the more they'll be able to help, after all.
With an irritated sigh, Nico tucks the Staff back into its harness on her back, and turns to her companion. ] We're not getting anywhere.
no subject
I am still not used to that.
[Out of all of them, Evie feels most comfortable around Nico. She gets the Wicca and goth, even if it isn't exactly her style. It's far closer to her own worldview than Gert or Chase or Alex. The only other person she might have felt safe with is Molly, but there was no way Gert would split up with her sister.
No, they aren't. But, it's hard to get anywhere when you don't know what to look for. Evie pulls out her mother's mirror, stolen from her purse between leaving the crazy murder cathedral and pretending to chill in one of the outbuildings at the Wilders'. She has to be specific when asking it questions, she's learned. But if she can phrase things in just the right way, the mirror will show her anything she wants. It's helped them find safe places to crash for the night, as well as food. And it found them one of those donation bins for clothes that happened to have things they could wear without feeling like they were trading their clothing for costumes.]
Show me where my mother is right now.
[An image of the tall, regal woman on the city council whom everyone calls "the evil queen" behind her back appears in the mirror. She's in her office at city hall, looking up at a pair of people whose shoulders Evie can just see in the corners of the image, as if the 'camera' were between them to focus on her mom.]
We could always try looking through things at my mom's place. We found the Staff at yours. Maybe there's more there we can find. We know she wouldn't leave anything incriminating at work.
no subject
The same can be said of the mirror Evie took from her mom, though. It's saved their butts countless times already, helping them to find exactly what they needed, when they needed it. In the same way that the Staff is amazing for its ability to do almost anything Nico tells it to do, the mirror amazes Nico in how it can call up any image that Evie asks to see.
There's no doubt that they're a formidable team.
In response to Evie's suggestion, Nico nods. Unlike her parents, who own Wizard and can use the servers to store as much incriminating stuff Pride needs them to, Evie's mom's council position means that at work she has to keep her nose clean. So if they're gonna find anything from her, it'll almost definitely be at Evie's old house. ]
Is there a bus or something that goes near your place from here? [ Seriously, they have to find a way to steal a car or something. Nico starts filtering through her mind for concealment spells she hasn't already used on the two of them. Right now, nothing new comes to mind, and she sighs. ] We're gonna have to hide our faces. You know how weird the Staff is about repeat spells... unless you can think of something new. [ She offers her friend a wry smile. ] Maybe your mom's got a thesaurus I can lift, while we're there.
no subject
She frowns at the question. They aren't far from the bus depot, which will get them close enough to walk, but the chances of being recognized would be far higher there. And there's the issue of money. Another reason Evie wants to go home. She knows where her mom keeps her various 'emergency funds' - not that they've ever needed 'emergency funds' - and she can load up and make sure they have enough cash to get them some decent food access to opportunities.
She looks down at her mirror again.]
Show me a map of the bus routes.
[It's tiny, with so many, but once the image appears, Evie uses it like a touch screen. She zooms on the stop she sees that's closest to home, and then follows the route backward, closer to town. There! Just a few blocks away, in the opposite direction of depot.]
Down three blocks. We can check the time-table once we get there.
[The staff is very picky about words. Evie's just glad the mirror doesn't have a 'one and done' request issue. She tucks the mirror away while she thinks, and snickers at the idea of stealing a thesaurus.]
No one is going to believe we're carrying a thesaurus for fun.
Maybe we don't have to use an illusion spell. [She takes Nico's hand to drag her into the shadow of an alley a few stores down. Thankfully, it's empty of people.] Pull down your hair, and let's compare what little makeup we have. People who've seen our faces have seen how we usually do ourselves up. Change it for now, we change people's expectations.
no subject
[ Not that most students would even carry around a thesaurus... but hey. Maybe they're total nerds.
She follows Evie into the alley... and immediately pulls a face at the suggestion. It makes sense, of course it does, but sense isn't magic, and it doesn't have the ability to make her like something of which she immediately hates the idea. Still, she pulls down her hair at Evie's suggestion, and starts rummaging in her bag for makeup.
Of course, everything Nico has is in shades of black, red, or the occasional purple. She considers it for a moment, thinking about how Evie tends to wear her makeup before offering her black lipstick, liquid eyeliner, and red eye-shadow. ]
You're right, but for the record, I hate this idea.
[ Speaking of hair, though, maybe they should see if they can find some kind of wig for Evie, too. Her dark blue hair may not be quite as glaringly obvious as Gert's purple, but it's still a unique trait. For now, just changing their hairstyles should be enough, but...
A sudden thought strikes her, and Nico's eyes widen slightly. ] Actually... I've got an idea. At least until we find something a little more permanent. [ A grin finds her lips as she reaches for the Staff again, holding it out in front of her. ] Trust me? [ Because if this works, they're about to look very, very different. No illusions, either. ]
( ooc; if Evie agrees to Nico's kinda-insane idea, feel free to link me a non-Evie Sofia Carson pic to reflect how you'd like her to look!! )
no subject
[Evie says nothing at the face, instead pulling her own makeup out of her bag. It isn't anywhere near her usual stash, but it's something that will help. Blue eyeliner, concealer, mascara, and two different lipsticks - one bright red and one a more neutral color - with matching lip liners. When she looks up, she smiles to see Nico's pulled her hair down.]
You can hate it all you want as long as it works.
[She looks at the makeup Nico's offered, and pulls out her mirror again. She can work with this. At her friend's words, she glances up, and her eyes narrow when she sees Nico's face framed by the ring atop the Staff.]
What are you thinking?
[OOC: something like this.]
no subject
When the other girl looks up and pauses what she's doing, Nico takes that as trust enough - besides, if Evie really hates it, she can undo it. (She thinks.) ] I'm thinking we need more than just a change in make-up. [ She raises the Staff, pricking her thumb with a wince to activate it. ] Costume change!
[ A light washes over both girls from head to toe. When it fades, Nico gapes at Evie, now looking far more the part of a brown haired young professional than a teenaged runaway. And while she can't see her own face, Evie will see a similar look on Nico, too.
Their parents, and the authorities, are expecting blue hair and a goth; they won't be so easy to find now. ]
What do you think?
no subject
No. Way.
[She whips her mirror out of her purse - which she notes has also changed appearance like Nico has. It's way more sophisticated than what she carries usually - way more her mom's style. She looks herself over in the mirror, lips parting as she takes in the new appearance.
No one would expect to see them walking around like this. They look almost grown up. They look responsible. A smile spreads across her lips.]
I think you are brilliant!
[She throws her arms around Nico briefly before tucking her things back into her bag. She straightens her posture and flips her new ponytail over her shoulder. They can do this. They can do this. No one will expect them to walk around in plain sight, and no one will expect to see them dressed like this.]
It's three blocks to the bus stop. If we move, we can catch the next one up to my mom's neighborhood without having to go through the central depot.
[She offers Nico her arm and grins like mad.]
no subject
She does take the offered arm, though, after slipping the Staff into her bag; and she might be privately beaming to herself about being called "brilliant", too. It's much more credit than she usually gives herself, that's for sure. ]
Three blocks. Cool. [ That's not far at all, and with their new appearances, Nico doubts anyone will be looking at them too closely. Even without the wanted signs all over the place, they're far less noticeable right now than a girl with blue hair and a goth with a staff strapped to her back. ] Let's get out of here.
[ And remember, Nico, she can almost hear her mom saying in her mind, don't slouch. Shoulders straight. ]
Hopefully we find something useful at your mom's place. [ A small, playful grin. ] I'll be pissed if I dressed up like this for nothing.
no subject
She nods, still grinning, as they step out into the main street again. Three blocks. Three blocks is nothing compared to the amount of running and walking they've been doing.]
There has to be something. We just have to dig a little.
[She lightly bumps her should against Nico's.]
It's not a bad look for you, even if it's not at all your usual style.
no subject
Yeah, yeah. [ It's said with a roll of her eyes, though it's good-natured at least. ] It feels a little too... mom for me. In our situation that's probably a good thing though, I guess?
[ Definitely a good thing. AS predicted, no one pays attention to them at all - it's the least under the microscope Nico has felt in weeks.
Belatedly, she offers: ] You look amazing, by the way.
no subject
It's a good thing. Your mom knows you'd never be caught dead wearing one of her power suits.
[Free from having to look over her shoulder all the time, Evie's walk becomes more natural and confident. Like Nico, she's enjoying the relative freedom of this disguise. Her grin only widens at the compliment.]
Thank you!
[When they reach the bus stop, Evie clutches her purse a bit more tightly. There's a small crowd waiting. Most of them look the way the girls currently do, young professionals on their way to work or home, depending on their shift. But she'd be a fool to not keep close tabs on the thing that holds her entire life right now in it. She joins the crowd at the back, near the posting for the route. Not that she doubts her mirror, but it never hurts to double check. Four more minutes, according to the time table.]
Not long. We made it just in time.
no subject
At the bus stop, Nico does the same check and secure of her purse. Sure, she could have the Staff back out and any would-be thieves on their backs before anyone could do much, but... She used a spell to take attention away from them, and the last thing she needs is to give it back. So the mundane way of protection is the best for now. ]
Your mirror's really something.
[ It's not the first time she's said it; nor will it be the last.
The four minutes pass quickly, and before long the bus is rumbling up. Nico nods at Evie, admittedly feeling a touch nervous about being in a small space with all these people. Even with the different clothes and style, what if someone recognizes them...? ]
no subject
She meets Nico's gaze as the bus pulls up, and offers her a small smile.]
We've got this. We can do this.
[She speaks softly, hoping only Nico hears as she falls in line with the other patrons, and pulls her fare from her pocket. Buses are a necessity, and so the money has to be spent. She mimics the people in front of her, dropping the coins into the machine without looking at the driver, then shuffles about halfway back, finding an empty seat big enough for the two of them to share, and waits for Nico to join her. So many people have their phones out that she feels a little self-conscious about leaving hers in her purse. But she can't afford the distraction. Instead, she turns her head toward the window, trying to look bored and keep an eye on Nico at the same time.]
Nico keeps ping-ponging back and forth between at-ease and stressed-af
[ A little later, Nico will consider how strange it is that Evie's presence helps her to feel more at ease than she would otherwise.
Now is not that time. She may be more at ease, but she's certainly not completely there, and admittedly she's rather distracted by scanning around them constantly, one hand remaining tucked in her purse and resting on the Staff. It feels safer, somehow, having a hold on it.
Dropping the coins in the machine with her other hand, she threads through the people to join Evie on the seat. Like her friend, she refrains for now from pulling her phone out. Doing so might help them blend in more, but she'd much rather have eyes on the situation. With any luck, they'll just look like two work friends deep in conversation. Or something. ]
How far is it? [ Her voice is low, and hopefully sounding much more casual than the all-kinds-of-uptight she's currently feeling. She doesn't like being around this many people on a normal day, much less a day when she's wanted. Disguise or not, it's beyond uncomfortable. ]
no subject
She hadn't realized just how tight a squeeze the double seat would be, even for girls as relatively small as they are. They sit shoulder to shoulder, hip to hip. A glance around shows the rest of the passengers just as packed, and she is so, so glad that she's sitting next to someone she knows and trusts.]
About a thirty minute ride, based on the schedule.
[She turns her head to look at Nico. While anyone that might overhear them would take Nico's tone for boredom or annoyance, Evie can hear the underlying tension. She reaches over and takes her friend's hand, giving it a squeeze. When she speaks, it's low enough that she hopes any potential eavesdroppers won't hear.]
We're doing okay. We've got this.
no subject
(Except thirty minutes is an eternity when they're trapped with this many people. Because trapped is definitely what they are. Nico's not claustrophobic, but... actually right now she's feeling kind of claustrophobic.)
The hand on hers is welcome, and Nico squeezes back, offering the other girl a small, weak smile. ]
Thirty minutes isn't too bad. [ She sincerely hopes that she sounds more convinced than she feels. Not so much for Evie -- of course for Evie; she hates appearing weak to anyone, much less one of the other Pride kids -- but less for Evie than the other passengers on the bus, anyway. ]
no subject
It's just til the car's fixed. Couple of days, max.
[Just in case anyone overhears them. That should give an excuse, in case anyone remembers their faces as not being regulars on the route, and makes them sound older than they are, she figures.
Despite her outward confidence, the nerves and pretending are exhausting, and Evie leans her head down onto Nico's shoulder, letting her eyes close for just a minute.]
Then we'll get back to a normal routine.
[Does that sound wistful? Evie would give just about anything to have things be normal. Hopefully, this trip to her mom's will get them closer to that. It will at least leave them a little more flush with cash. Maybe with their changed appearances, and enough of her mom's "emergency stash", they could even rent a motel room or something. Sleep on a bed for the night.]
no subject
Couple of days. That better be all. [ Her existing anxiety means the tone comes off just as irritated as she hoped. Who needs acting skills? ] You know I hate public transport.
[ Goddess, they sound like a couple. With a wry smile, she rests her head against Evie's in return, although her own eyes stay open, watchful. Running away's definitely not all it's cracked up to be, that's for sure. Zero out of ten; would not recommend. They're both anxious, exhausted, stressed beyond all belief... If Evie can get any rest right now, Nico certainly wouldn't blame her. ]
You can rest if you want; I'll wake you up when we get closer. [ Her tone is low, a hint of affection in the edges. ]
no subject
I know. But, it won't be that bad.
[She gives Nico's hand another squeeze, patting the top of it with her free hand. She feels the weight of Nico's head on her own, and her smile widens just a bit. She's always been one of the more openly affectionate members of their group.]
You sure?
[It would be nice to just rest, even for a few minutes. The hum of the engine and the slow rattling pace of the bus are surprisingly soothing. With Nico beside her, watching their backs, she feels safe enough to keep her eyes closed.]
Just a few minutes. Poke me if I snore.
[She shifts just a little in the seat, so she's a bit more comfortable and her purse is more securely in her lap.]
no subject
[ Nico, on the other hand, is definitely not the touchy-feely type. Holding hands is one thing, but... Honestly, under any other circumstance, she'd probably shrug Evie's head right off her shoulder rather than lean back into her. But right now, they need one another more than ever. And with the help Evie has given to her, it's the least she can do to offer her any small comfort in return. ]
Close your eyes, okay?
[ For now, Nico will sit back in the seat, her eyes careful and watchful, making sure to keep both Evie and herself safe until they arrive at their destination. She doesn't know the exact stop name, but she knows how much time is meant to pass, at least.
And so, about 20 minutes later, the bus now much emptier than it was before, Nico nudges Evie lightly with her arm. ]
Hey, sleepy. I think we're almost there.
no subject
Sorry. Didn't mean to actually pass out like that.
[She lifts a hand to smooth down her hair, then realizes that the Staff gave her a ponytail, so there's nothing to smooth. Instead, she stretches her arm above her head, trying to help herself wake up.]
I take it the world didn't end on the ride over here?
[Now that the bus is much less crowded, she slides her mirror carefully out of her purse, holding it like a phone. First, she checks the bus stops. Then, she asks about her mother, who is still thankfully out at city hall.]
Our stop is the one after this.
[Said quietly as she tucks her mirror away. Now that she's closer to her mom's house, she starts feeling the nerves return.]
Think you can make sure the cameras don't notice us when we get there?
no subject
[ Her tone sounds abrupt, perhaps, but the warmth is in the shake of her head, the small smile she offers to Evie to assure her that it's okay. (She even means it, which is more than she could offer some of their fellow runaways.) She gets it - with how much time they've been spending looking over their shoulders of late, the chance for a good rest is something they can't take lightly. ]
The world's still going strong.
[ Even though the bus is emptier, Nico's eyes are watchful, searching over those who do ride alongside them just to make sure no one spies what Evie is doing. They can't afford the questions. Not when they're so close to being where they need to get.
In response to her friend's question, the witch nods, grip tightening around the Staff, her free hand still never having left it. ]
Yeah, I can handle that.
[ She hopes she sounds more confident than she feels. Already she's racing through words in her mind, trying to make sure there's something she can say that she hasn't used already. (And maybe wishing just a little bit that she'd had more time to actually learn how to work the damned thing other than just going on instinct alone.
Maybe a power outage. That would take care of any electronic locks, too... ]
no subject
[The fact that their parents haven't destroyed the world, trapping them on public transportation for eternity is actually comforting. As is the fact that Nico keeps such a sharp lookout without acting like she's doing it.
She nods at Nico's words. She trusts Nico's abilities - she just doesn't like having to rely on magic for so much. Something's going to backfire eventually, or the Staff might have only so much juice in it before it's done. She has no idea.
The bus eventually pulls up to their stop, and as it slows, Evie stands, waiting for Nico to let her out of the seat before she strides up the aisle and hops off the bus. Their good luck seems to be holding; no one else got off at their stop, so they don't have to try and walk a different way, or double back, or anything that would definitely look suspicious in this part of town. The streets are familiar, well-kept, with large houses surrounded by manicured lawns. Her mother's isn't too far - she can see the apple trees that her mother loves so much just up the hill.]
Ready?
no subject
Ready.
[ No one else off the bus, the road itself quiet - safe enough. Nico pulls the Staff from her purse, keeping it held in such a way that its appearance is mostly shielded from the view of anyone who might drive by. She tilts her head up at the property as they begin their ascent of the hill.
Now just to work out how to get a power outage to stick... ]
I'm gonna need somewhere to cast the spell. Somewhere on your mom's land, but where the cameras can't see. Any ideas?
