it's all in the cards...
THE TAROT MEME

This meme is pretty basic. You post in, put any specifics you'd like (or not like) in your header and entry, ???, and RP. For the prompts, however, you've got two methods for ideas.
1. LUCK OF THE DRAW! Click here to get a randomly chosen card and use it to prompt your scenario. Utilize the picture, the person in it, the colors: anything you like.
OR
2. CHOOSE YOUR PROMPT! from the list of Major Arcana:
00. The Fool - the beginning of a relationship; one character helping another to avoid a mistake they didn't notice; a character starting a new journey

04. The Emperor - one character is playing dad-friend to another; a character is taking charge, one character is being overbearing, a character is trying to get a handle on their life
05. The Hierophant - one character is questioning the status quo; one character is questioning their values; one character is coming to another as someone who knows their business
06. The Lovers - two characters decide to get together, two characters make a choice together, two characters make choices to keep their relationship
07. The Chariot - a character is going on a trip; a character is triumphant; a character wants to GET GOING on something; a character is impatient or headstrong;
08. Strength - a character has to reach into a well of inner strength; a character has to find a work smarter instead of harder; a character has to find a way to deal with their inner conflicts
09. The Hermit - a character has been going off on their own a lot lately; a character has been feeling lonely; a character is doing something on their own and it may be a good idea but it may not
10. The Wheel of Fortune - fate has just thrown the character(s) for a loop; what goes around comes around
11. Justice - a character is facing legal trouble; a character has broken the law and has to deal with the consequences; a character is seeking justice for someone else

I figure most of the Pride shit's gonna be on the computer, so I needed to juice it.
Any idea on her password?
[ Nico doesn't want to risk locking herself out of the computer, so while she waits, she commits to a deeper search of other parts of the room. Of course, she doesn't have anywhere near the amount of knowledge that Evie does, but she manages to uncover a couple of stacks of cash all by herself, along with a few other small valuables that she figures they can probably pawn off to get even more.
And what about the bookshelf? On the run, there are a lot of evenings spent in complete boredom... perhaps Nico can find them something half decent to read. ]
no subject
Gotcha. Shit, password.
[What would her mom likely use as a password? Something literary, most likely. Mom loved books and plays. Wait. Wait, wait....]
Try 12AngryMen
It's one of her favorite plays
[She turns back to her dresser, hitting up the hiding spots she knows her mom has put there for her own stash. Then, she heads back to the bathroom to grab a couple of unopened toothbrushes and some toothpaste, along with other toiletry items she can fit in the backpack. She's grabbed an extra empty backpack as well, and as she passes the office on her way to the living room, she tosses it inside.]
Fill it with whatever you think we might need. I'm going to check the front rooms.
no subject
She stops browsing the bookshelf and goes back to the computer to key it in, breathing a sigh of relief when it actually works - the last thing she wanted to have to do was spend another spell on it if they locked themselves out, so first attempt is lucky and a blessing. ]
You're a genius.
[ That's the last thing she says for a few moments, focusing instead on the computer. There's a few folders that look promising, and so she swipes a thumb drive from the desk and copies them over. They'll have time to look at it later.
She's intent enough on the computer that she actually jumps when the backpack flies in through the door. She shoots Evie a Look, but the other girl is already moving, and Nico can't help but laugh. ]
Way to give me a freakin' heart attack... [ It's not yelled, but definitely said loud enough that the other will hear. Still, she's smiling as she grabs the bag and puts the cash and valuables in, the thumb drive following shortly after once the files have copied. Then she goes back to the bookshelf, frowning over the various volumes. ]
Is there anything good to read in here?
no subject
Depends what you consider good.
[Then, she turns back to the task at hand. And freezes. There's a car in the driveway, and it's not her mom's. Black, unmarked, no license plate. She backs away slowly, her eyes darting from window to window, before she turns and dashes back to the office. Don't panic, don't panic.]
Car. Outside. What do we do?
no subject
There's no time to think of a proper spell. Nico grabs Evie and tugs her into the office, pointing the Staff at the doors. ] Locked in.
[ And now they are, the doors swinging shut and staying that way, even when Nico tries to tug them back open.
Maybe it wasn't exactly the smartest move, but it will give her time to think of something better to get them out of here. And in the meantime... ]
Can you get eyes on them, Evie?
[ If they're lucky, whoever it is won't even try to get into the office.
(Privately, Nico thinks they may have already exhausted their luck for today.) ]
no subject
On it.
[She has to dig under the cash to find her mirror, but she pulls it out at last and looks down.]
Magic mirror in my hand, show me the new intruders on my mother's land.
[The image starts with the car, its black-tinted windows and lack of license plate, then pans to a pair of men in suits standing at the front door. The doorbell rings at the same time, and she startles, almost dropping the mirror in the process.
Then, the image moves again, to another pair of suits at the side door at the kitchen, peering through the window. And another, pair, checking each of the windows, and getting closer to the office.
She pulls Nico toward the closet, yanks the door, and pulls them both inside. Yes, the blinds are down, but they're only partially shuttered. She's fairly certain the suits will try to peer through and see as much as they can.]
I have no idea who these guys are. I don't like it.
[In the dark, cramped space of the closet, it's a lot easier to let the fear slide into her voice. The panic at the unknown. She wants to run, but can't, and she can feel her heart pounding, urging her to move.]
Maybe they'll just go away if they see there's nothing wrong with the house.
no subject
Yeah. They're probably just here because the power went out. [ She tries to keep her voice steady. She's not really convinced that she does a good job of it, but she tries. ]
They won't be able to get into the office. ...But we should be ready, just in case. [ There has to be something... ]
Does your mom have any hidden rooms that they wouldn't know about? You know, like in Alex's house?
[ It's a long shot, really. But it's better than nothing. She thinks. She prays. ]
no subject
Probably. Cameras all cutting out like that all at once? It's likely the guys that monitor all of that, looking for the cause before they call my mom.
[Stupid, stupid Evie. This was why her mom hadn't let her get a dog as a "fail safe" - anything strange with the cameras, and suddenly the Men in Black show up. Think. Think.]
Will they be able to turn the cameras back on even with your magic? Or is there something else that could help us get out of here without being seen?
[She shakes her head at the mention of a hidden room. Of all the precautions her mother had taken, a safe room hadn't been one of them. Something about being trapped in a box with no windows had freaked her out, and Evie couldn't blame her. Being stuck in the closet like this was bad enough.]
If there's anything, I don't know about it, so it doesn't matter either way.
no subject
Really, the only thing she can do now is try to think of another way to get them out. And with the amount of disguise and camouflage spells she's already burned on them...
An idea sparks at the back of her mind, and she turns to face Evie, a frown on her features. ]
I've got an idea. It's a long shot, though. Even if it works, we're gonna need to get out of here fast.
[ And if it doesn't? They may need to fight. But she doesn't say that, instead just gripping her Staff in one white-knuckled hand. Unless Evie has an objection, or an idea... well, this is the best one she's got. ]
no subject
Even if they do just leave, though, the camera situation will be an issue. They won't be able to get out of the house without being seen if the cameras get turned back on, and even with the illusion spells.... Her mom's not stupid. She'll realize who broke in, and have photos of their current disguises to plaster all over the media. Doubly exposed.
She looks up to see Nico frowning, and her heart starts pounding. She's pretty sure whatever Nico's going to say, she won't like it.]
What are you thinking? Tell me before you use the Staff. We have enough time for that.
[She has no clue if that last statement is the truth or not. She could look at the mirror, but if they're going to have to make a run, she can't afford to lose it. So, she tucks it into her purse, which is still cross-body around her, pinned by one of the backpacks.]
no subject
She's not good in groups. Never has been.
Knowing all of this doesn't make it easy to stop, though. When Evie asks, she might catch just a hint of irritation in the way Nico looks at her in response. Just for a moment before the other breathes out, forcing herself to stay calm. Evie has every right to know what she's planning. ]
I can send them away. [ No time to explain why them, not us. She can only hope Evie understands. ] I don't know how far they'll go, but it should [ --she hopes-- ] give us time to get out of here before they can get the cameras on.
no subject
We grab our bags, head out the kitchen door. If you think we'll have any time for it, we can raid the pantry. If not, we've got enough cash to keep us fed for a while. I need to lock the door once we're out, leave the exterior the way we found it. That will buy us more time in terms of my mom.
[She nods, shifting to get ready to move at Nico's word.]
Do it.
no subject
[ That's the last thing she says before she focuses her intent on the suits surrounding them. Hope this works. Where the spell goes is more important than ever before. Adrenaline has her hands trembling as they hold the Staff up. ]
Get lost.
[ She feels the wave of magic emerge from the Staff, but just like before she has no idea if it actually worked. Tucking it back into her bag, she looks across to Evie, hoping that she can use the mirror to confirm. ]
Coast clear?
[ In the meantime, she lifts as many of the bags as she can, ready to run as soon as they have the confirmation that they need. ]
no subject
She tucks the mirror safely away before she pushes open the closet door and hauls herself free.]
Clear. Time to go.
[She's got a backpack on her back already, from before, and her purse slung cross-body, pinned by the strap. She picks up another bag, threading her arms through it at the front. She looks ridiculous, but she doesn't care. They need to move.
When she gets back to the kitchen, Evie pulls open the pantry door and grabs a few things that might fit in her second backpack. A box of cereal, some cans of fruit. Granola bars. She's tempted by the crackers, but she doesn't see a way to fit them in anything she's got. When the bags are full to bursting, she steps aside so Nico can grab anything else she wants, while she moves to the fridge. No power means she's risking having a few things spoil, but the little bottles of ginger ale she can slide into the side pockets of one backpack won't go bad. Something besides water will help them both. Then, she heads over to the kitchen door, pulling out her key.]
After you.
no subject
(Or if the spell is attached to them and they'll keep running forever and ever, permanently damaged. That's the thought that makes her feel truly sick to her stomach.)
Still, she can only push it aside, nodding back at Evie as the other girl pushes the closet door open, and just like that they're making a break for the kitchen, both laden down with too many bags. It's Nico who grabs the crackers when Evie passes them over, along with a package of dry pasta and a couple cans of soup. She's not much of a cook, and they don't have appliances, but they could cook these over a fire, maybe. And pasta goes a long way.
She follows Evie to the door, and through it, her eyes scanning the area outside of the house. She doesn't see or hear the car returning. That's good.
Or bad. She feels her stomach start to twist with anxiety. There have been a few too many unknowns today, with the Staff, and it's finally starting to take its toll. ]
Let's get out of here. [ Her voice is quiet, strained, almost pleading. Probably unlike anything Evie has ever heard from her before. ]
no subject
New problem. It's still daylight, and they're laden with bags, walking through a neighborhood with well-manicured lawns. Most people are still at work, sure, but Evie knows which of her neighbors stay at home during the day, and like to peek out their windows, especially when it's getting close to the time the school buses come through.
Keep walking, keep moving, head high, long strides. She can hear her mother's words echo in her mind. Doesn't matter how ridiculous you look if you project confidence. And she knows she and Nico both look ridiculous. Almost more so, once she remembers the disguise spell Nico used earlier that day. Still, it's the mantra that's keeping her walking.]
Head high, long strides. Don't look around, just walk with purpose.
[She says it out loud for herself as much as for Nico, and repeats it twice more. Instead of heading back toward the bus stop, she pulls Nico down side streets at random, moving diagonal to where she wants to end up. There's a park not too far away, one that's been crafted with little batches of trees and a manmade creek and a couple of play areas. It's the trees she wants now. Relative safety, so they can consolidate their bags, maybe shift things around, and carefully redistribute the the cash into a bunch of little places, so they won't be shit out of luck if someone grabs a bag. As she's walking, another idea hits her.]
Do you still have a burner phone?
no subject
Head high, long strides. Don't look around, just walk with purpose.
[ She's not great at following, but given their circumstance she has little choice right now; Evie knows this part of the neighborhood in a way Nico could never dream to, and so she trails obediently, letting the other guide her down different side streets. She can't help but feel a spark of
pride(nope, she hates that word) satisfaction at the way the other moves, careful to never move in a single direction for too long. If there's anything positive to be said about their having to run, it's that after so many years dismissing Evie and Karolina both as the pretty airheads of the group, she's finally started to see the strengths her friends bring to the table. She's deep in thought, focused on their steps and Evie's mantra, when the question comes, and it takes her a moment before she nods her head. ]
Uh, yeah.
[ It's a little awkward, fishing around in her purse while carrying as much as she is, but she manages, resurfacing a few minutes later with the burner phone Alex helped them all get. She holds it out to Evie. ]
no subject
She can see the park when Nico pulls out the phone and offers it to her.]
Hang on to it for just a second.
No obvious police cars. Point number one. No sign of the suits. Point number two. And a picnic table free by some of the trees she'd wanted to go near makes point number three. She resists the urge to grin as she angles for the picnic table.]
We're going to sit down, rearrange our things just a little, ditch any bags we can, spread out where we're keeping certain things. Then, I'm going to find a hotel for us to stay at tonight, and we'll call a Lyft to drop us a couple of blocks away from it. Once we're inside for the night, we can go through things more thoroughly, and maybe see if Alex will let us use his laptop. Sound like a plan?
no subject
Besides, the idea of spending the night in a hotel, instead of their usual fare of late, is probably the best thing she's heard all day. ]
Sounds good.
[ She sits at the picnic table once they reach it, putting down the bags she's carrying so that she can start shifting things between them. She's barely started when an even better thought occurs to her: she can take a shower. Thank the Goddess.
It's that thought that makes her try to rephrase her too-simple statement, trying to offer more gratitude to her friend: ]
Sounds great, actually. It'll be nice to sleep in a real bed for once. And have a shower.
[ She smiles. ]
Especially after today. We did good, Evie.
no subject
She takes a seat on the bench opposite Nico, and starts offloading bags. Her eyes dart around as she works, taking the nicest of the bags and shifting things to fit more into it. She looks over at Nico when she rephrases her earlier statement, and smiles back.]
We did. We make a pretty good team.
no subject
Sometimes she wishes she'd had more practice time with her mom to work it out. But that's dumb, right? With everything their parents did, why would she ever want to spend more time with her mother?
She sighs to herself, putting her focus back on the bags and working to reorganize them. Evie's right, too - they do make a good team. That's something much nicer to focus on than her mother. ]
We can probably use some of this cash to get ourselves some clothes a little more like this. [ Nico can't believe she's saying that, but... ] It's a pretty good costume.
no subject
That's a good idea. I can find us some consignment shops. We'll want to spread out the spending, so we don't get caught. I also think I need to find a wig, or something else to hide my hair in public.
[As she speaks, she tucks bits of cash - no more than a hundred in a chunk - into every available pocket on the bags they're keeping, as well as in the different compartments of her purse, and down her bra. The disguises have left her without pockets, sadly, so she'll have to make do with what she can.]
We might want to turn some of this into Visa gift cards, too. Girls who look like we do now don't carry a whole lot of cash on hand.
no subject
Honestly, it's kind of impressive how much Evie knows about this. And maybe a little worrisome, actually. She can't help but raise her eyebrows at the other girl as she thinks about it. ]
Have you been on the run before? Or do you just watch way too many true crime shows?
no subject
The stashing is from mom. You saw all the little hiding spots she has. The rest? Leverage, Grifters, Skins, and a bunch of other random shows.
[It feels logical, is what she wants to say. But, that could be the television shows that have seeped into her unconsciousness. It's not like her mom ever paid attention to what she watched, as long as she was quiet.
She's managed to render one bag completely superfluous by her quick repacking. The question of where to ditch it is solved by a garbage can nearby. Let someone dumpster diving later find it. Once she's done that, she sits back down and, with a glance around, she pulls out her mirror.]
Okay, what part of town do we want to stay in tonight?
no subject
Her own actions are a little slower; in the end Nico is able to find a way to reduce the number of bags she has too, one of the smaller bags following Evie's into the same garbage can - probably not the best place for it, but they'll be long gone from here soon.
She purses her lips at the question, thinking through it for a moment or two. Somewhere nice, she thinks, but not too expensive. Although in the end the most important thing is... ]
Somewhere not too far away. Traveling like this... we'll be noticeable. But we don't wanna stay too close, either.
[ Not after breaking into Evie's old house in the way they did. Getting clear is their best bet. ]
