The "Be Careful What You Wish For" Meme

Everyone has something they wish for. If we didn't have desires, we wouldn't have hearts. Sometimes we want mundane things: a turkey sandwich sounds pretty good right about now. And sometimes we want impossible things: if only I could make her love me.
Just for today, your heart's desires are granted. Maybe it has something to do with that monkey paw you found at a flea market. Perhaps you've gone on an expedition and returned with some rusty old lamp. It could be a wish on a shooting star, an extinguished birthday candle, or even the work of a good old-fashioned Faery Godparent. Whatever's caused this sudden change in your luck, one thread holds true. It turned out wrong.
Now, your crush loves you so much she's stalking you. You can turn objects into gold with a touch, but all the food turns inedible on your tongue. Everyone's left you alone to read, but you've just broken your glasses. The sandwich is a little dry.
Can you handle getting what you want?
Thread around and find out.

Ok he can prod all he wants.
Like Monroe would have the guts to actually ask him.
Monroe mock glares at him. "No, you're never funny."
Hopefully he just the sarcasm. Now he's uncertain of how normal he should be acting, but Nick seems to be handling it alright. Maybe?
The kind of boy friend that doesn't exist. Or on that is concerned about touching someone that doesn't remember him. Monroe would probably do that if they were actually dating. Maybe.
Monroe sighs, he is going to have to explain so much. And Nick really isn't going to believe him. Hopefully his Grimm instincts are telling Nick to trust a blutbad. "Going to a neurologist isn't going to help. Any way we can't go runny around telling people you have no memories. It's not safe."
He snorts and shakes his head. Why is Nick so damn amusing without any memories. At least he remembers some fairy tales. "They're real, well real-ish. You're a Grimm."
That wasn't very helpful, but he wants to break this to Nick gently.
no subject
Nick was hoping Monroe'd see it that way.
Damn it. Nick is going to have to do all the asking, isn't he?
Nick grins slightly. "Too late. You said I lost my sense of humor, which meant I must've had one before this. You think I'm funny." He's definitely handling the sarcasm all right, as long as it's pretty obvious.
Well, obviously the first isn't true, because they're completely dating. But yeah, Nick gets the second part. He can understand why Monroe would be hesitant to treat Nick the same as he usually does.
Nick would've had told Monroe the truth about his lack of memories if his instincts weren't telling him that he could trust Monroe. But he frowns at that. "What do you mean it's not safe? You think people are going to try to take advantage of me, or something? Don't worry, I'll check with you before I do anything."
Except then it starts getting weird. "Real." Nick raises an eyebrow. "Okay, now you're just messing with me. I thought I was a detective, not a fairy tale writer."
no subject
Yes he is. Nick start doing the asking.
"Fine, sometimes you're funny." Monroe smiles slightly. "Sometimes."
Sure lets go with both of those.
"Yes they'll try to take advantage of you. They'll try to kill you." Great Monroe now you've probably scared him. Don't get annoyed at him. Monroe needs to be gentle. Good luck with that.
"You're not a writer." Face palm. "You hunt the bad ones. The bad creatures from the stories. They're real, and some are really dangerous."
But not all. Like Monroe for example. He just has to hope he was able to tap into Nick's earnest voice for that explanation, because if Nick won't believe him things are going to turn out badly.
no subject
Fine, fine. As soon as he gets his memory back.
"I'll take sometimes. One more thing I know about myself," he says with another grin. And he's going to remember that, for when he gets his memory back.
Good, because that's exactly what Nick believes.
Nick just raises an eyebrow at that. "I'm a homicide detective. I could've figured there's probably a few people out there who'd try that. It wasn't like I was planning on telling everyone I see about it, anyway. I only told you because I knew I could trust you."
And Nick's trying hard to remember that his instincts had told him that he could trust Monroe, because really? What the hell. "I hunt the bad ones. Fairy tale creatures are real, like Rumpelstiltskin and the evil queen and witches and big bad wolves, and I'm some kind of... what? Fairy tale killer? Creature police?"
no subject
Oh right, that problem again.
And now Monroe feels a little bad for joking that Nick isn't funny. He needs to remember that Nick is trying to pick up on clues about himself for what Monroe says. Make a note Monroe, no down playing Nick's skills.
Phew.
He was going to point out that it wasn't a few people that wanted to kill him. There were a lot. Including some reapers who would love to get their hands on him while he didn't remember how to protect his own ass. He was going to point that out. Really. But then Nick says something really familiar, which is really surprising. "You knew you could trust me?"
"Not exactly. But close enough." This was really hard to explain. "You were a homicide cop first. Then you got your Grimm abilities."
That didn't sound any better. Crap.
"It's like the story of little red riding hood. You're the huntsman. You swoop in and save the girl." And kill the big bad wolf. But he's not going to add that part in. He should have used a different story, but it's the one he's most familiar with.
no subject
Monroe shouldn't feel too bad. Even with amnesia, Nick's still reasonably good at picking up on Monroe's sarcasm. But also, not playing down his skills would be pretty helpful.
Nick frowns at the question, considering. He's not surprised that Monroe'd asked it, because without any memories, it is a little bit weird for Nick to trust him so easily. "Yeah. You were looking after me, and... I don't know, I guess it just feels safe, here. Like I said, I've been going on instinct. Instinct said to trust you."
No, that really didn't sound any better.
"Grimm abilities? You do realize how crazy that sounds, right?"
There's another pause after that, as Nick notices the absence of what usually goes along with that story. Granted, in the original story there is no huntsman and the girl dies - and how the hell does he know that, but not anything about himself? damn it - but since Monroe'd said Nick was like the huntsman, Nick's figuring that's not the story he's going with.
He looks at Monroe for a long moment. "You said I didn't remember what you were. Not who." ...man, he can't believe he's even thinking of taking this seriously.
no subject
Oh good. He'll keep it up. He's better at sarcasm then sincerity.
Monroe has no idea how to respond to that. This isn't the first time Nick has said he trusted him, but he's never figured out why Nick did. Has Nick been going off that instinct the whole time? He was going to have to ask Nick about that once they get his memories back. Monroe smiles slightly. "Your instincts said to trust me?"
"Yeah I know it sounds crazy, but you said you trust me. I wouldn't make things up at a time like this." He tries to copy Nick's earnest face. He doesn't do the best job, the face is Nick's thing.
Nick stop thinking.
Monroe shifts awkwardly, "Yeah, I'm-" He tails off. How exactly should he explain this. "One of those creatures."
Not like that Monroe. That was just horrible.
no subject
Yeah, Nick's noticed that. But fortunately, he's pretty sure he likes it.
Pretty much, yeah. Well, at first it was just instinct, anyway. What, did Monroe think Nick would just trust anyone he met two days ago to guard over his dying aunt? But after he got to know Monroe, he had more reasons to trust him. Or at least he did, when he remembered it. Now it's back to instinct. But when Monroe smiles at him, Nick smiles back, shifting a bit closer into Monroe's personal space. "Yeah. I don't know, I just - knew I could. Maybe there's something about you that makes me remember some things, even if I don't know why."
Well, fortunately, Nick doesn't know he can do the earnest face thing, so it mostly works. Well, actually, it's what Monroe says that really works, but still. "I know. I do trust you, it's just - really?"
No he likes thinking.
Nick raises an eyebrow. "You're one of those creatures. One of the ones I'm supposed to hunt down. You do realize that makes no sense, right? I have no urge to hunt you down. Not to kill you or anything, anyway." Yeah, Monroe, that was pretty horrible. "And you look human."
no subject
Nick likes his sarcasm? Even with no memory?
Monroe loves Nick's instincts. Nick get those memories back! Monroe wants to know about those other reasons. Monroe doesn't take any notice of Nick moving closer. Nick is always in his personal space when they talk about trust. Monroe shakes his head, but when he answers a little affection sneaks it's way into his voice. "You're an idiot."
Great! Finally there is a benefit to Nick having amnesia, no earnest face. "I know, it's weird. Just try to keep an open mind?" Please. Head desk.
"I'm glad you don't want to hunt me down. We got over that a long time ago." Look Nick just trust him ok. And don't ask him to show you his other form. "I don't always. I control it."
no subject
Yeah, he does. It seems it doesn't take memories for Nick to figure out that he likes sarcasm.
Nick's trying! And the fact that Monroe takes Nick getting into his personal space in stride is just more proof that they're dating, as far as he's concerned. Also, he can hear that affection, and it makes him smile. Apparently they're the kind of couple that does snarky banter and affectionate insults. Nick likes that, too. "And you're a jerk. I'd say 'but apparently I like you anyway,' but that'd just be proving your point for you," Nick teases.
Oh, he'll probably catch on to his earnest face abilities soon enough. "I'm trying, man."
Nick snorts slightly, raising an eyebrow. "Considering I'm sleeping here, I'd hope we got over that a long time ago." He's quiet for a moment, looking closely at Monroe. "All right. So what do you look like when you're not controlling it?" Come on, Monroe, you had to see that coming.
no subject
Good to know. Monroe might end up amping up the sarcasm once Nick gets his memories back.
Monroe is happy to see Nick smiling more. He really does act just like he did with his memories. It's a little eerie at times but at least Nick is wallowing over his missing memories. "You always prove my point."
"I know you are." This is getting frustrating. He can't blame Nick for having trouble believing him.
Monroe snorts back, but doesn't see a reason to reply. They've got it. They trust each other. For some reason. And then Nick asks the question he's been dreading. Great. Just great. He shifts uncomfortably. "I'm a Blutbad. More commonly known of as the big bad wolf thanks to your ancestors." Please don't freak out.
no subject
The sarcasm can get even more amped up? What is Nick getting himself into?
It's easier when all he has to do is trade snarky banter with Monroe. That doesn't require knowing anything about himself to do. "I don't know, you could just be telling me that so I'll prove your point more."
Trust him, it's not really any less frustrating for Nick. He wants to believe him, because he does trust Monroe, but this sounds pretty crazy, and without proof, Nick's still doubting a little bit.
Instincts, man. Grimm instincts are awesome. Also, it helps that Monroe was obviously concerned about him this morning, and more than willing to take care of him. And then Monroe answers, and it's not really surprising. "Guessing that's why you left the part off about the huntsman killing the big bad wolf in Little Red Riding Hood. Or the original ending."
He feels a little bad for making Monroe uncomfortable here, but with something like this, he can't just let it go. "Can I see, then?"
no subject
That's enough to fake it. And Monroe is just going to let Nick have this one, sort of. He answers sarcastically, "You're on to me, detective."
Monroe will give him proof. He promises. Monroe just wants to make sure Nick doesn't run away afterward. He can't help Nick if he bolts.
"Great so you remember both of those." Ugh! Remember the useful stuff. And remember Nick, you don't want to kill Monroe. He's your friend. "But yeah, that's why I didn't mention those parts."
"You sure? I don't want to freak you out anymore. It's not pretty." But human standards at least. It's pretty normal for him.
no subject
Yeah, it is. It's why Nick'd been able to fake those parts easier when he was trying to pretend he knew who he was. Nick grins at him. "You can't fool me. Even when I have no memories."
Nick's not going to run. Or at least, he's pretty sure he's not going to run.
"Yeah. I have no idea why I remember stuff like that, but nothing personal." He'd really like to remember the useful stuff, too. Also, no, he's not his friend. They're boyfriends, remember? Nick's not going to kill his boyfriend.
Nick just raises an eyebrow. "Yeah, I'm sure. Consider me suitably warned, okay?" At this point, Nick's suspecting that either Monroe's just stalling and hoping he'll drop it because he actually isn't going to turn into anything, or because he's going to turn into some hulking, slobbering monster.
no subject
Monroe snorts and smiles slightly. "Those Grimm instincts always get me in trouble."
The 'pretty sure' is what he's worried about.
"Sorry, look we'll get you're memories back." Right they will. Once he figures out how to do that. He still has to figure out what happened. Or find someone that can do it for him. "I don't want to have to explain the wesen world to you again."
Monroe sighs. Apparently Nick really is going to make him show him. Great. He takes a step back, giving Nick more space. Maybe if Monroe isn't so close Nick won't freak out. "Ok, here goes nothing."
He shifts his face but tries to look at nonthreatening as possible.
no subject
Nick grins at him, slightly hesitant, but also a bit sly. "You like it. Why else would you keep me around?"
Yeah, yeah, Nick's sure they'll get his memories back, too, but right now he's more concerned about this whole 'Grimm' and 'creature' thing, and his boyfriend apparently being the big bad wolf.
Right, now Nick's really worried. Is Monroe suddenly going to grow an extra foot or something? Hulk out like -
Oh.
Nick's eyes widen a little. "Okay. You, uh. You weren't kidding. Or being crazy."
Awesome. What the hell is this life he can't remember.
He takes a step forward without really realizing it, reaching out to touch Monroe's face, confirm what he's seeing. His hand rests on Monroe's cheek, fingers tracing up over his ear, across his forehead.
no subject
He should be more concerned about the memory thing. It's important.
He really wants to say 'I told you so' but Monroe is just going to give him a minute here. He really wishes he'd asked Nick about how all of this was explained to him. Monroe never had to deal with that before.
It's fucked up. Don't worry, Nick'll get used to it.
Monroe was about to change back when Nick's eyes go wide. Before he can, Nick reaches out to touch his face. He tries not to think about how weird this is, or about how much it doesn't bother him.
At least he didn't scream. Or throw him on the stairs like last time.
no subject
It's very important. But equally important is that he's apparently supposed to be some kind of creature killer, and his boyfriend is a creature.
How this was explained to him before was 'Nick saw people's faces change into strange things, thought he was going crazy, then his aunt showed up to get attacked and be cryptic at him.' So, really, Nick's had a lot more warning this time around.
Hopefully soon.
Really, this is weird for Monroe? Cause Nick has no memories and just found out the guy he thinks is his boyfriend isn't human. The touching part doesn't strike him as weird, because Nick just assumes they've done this before and he can't remember it.
Also, man, if Nick didn't scream when he started seeing people's faces change the first time around, he's not going to scream after getting a nice, long warning.
Speaking of which. Nick smiles a bit, hand still on Monroe's face. "This is what you didn't want me to freak out over? Man, the way you were talking, I was expecting a swamp monster or something."
no subject
He'll help Nick out here. Nick doesn't try to kill this creature.
Oh good to know. At least he isn't screwing this up too bad.
He will. He's got instincts. And Monroe.
Right, it's weirder for Nick. Sorry about that. Nick just usually isn't this close. He gets close, but not touching his face close.
Monroe didn't know him when he first saw someone's face change. All he knows is it breaks a normal person's mind. Screaming sounded like a reasonable response.
What Nick says is surprising, and it shows on his face. His still wolfed out face. He's a scary blutbad. "You're not freaked out."
Is Nick ever going to take his hand away? Not that Monroe will complain.
no subject
Thanks, Monroe. Nick appreciates the help there. Nice to know he doesn't usually try to kill his boyfriend.
Monroe isn't screwing this up at all. As long as he's got instincts and Monroe, then, Nick'll be good. And that wasn't sarcasm.
No, just touching his shoulder close. He hadn't worked his way up to touching his face close yet. Fortunately, Nick doesn't remember that, so face touching close it is.
Good point. Fortunately for them both, Nick's not a normal person. ...wait, when did that become fortunate.
Monroe's surprised. Why is Monroe surprised he's not freaked out? Obviously he must normally be not freaked out, considering they - oh. "Did I freak out the first time I saw this before? It's just - all that build up, the way you were saying it wasn't pretty and you didn't want me to freak out and backing away, I was expecting something really bad."
Or nothing at all, but he won't mention that part.
Not any time soon, he's not. Actually, he's just going to brush his thumb across Monroe's jawline, through his fur.
no subject
That's Monroe, helpful in all situations.
Is amnesic Nick being all earnest?
Monroe is starting to wonder why this Nick is so touchy. Nick didn't stroke the first wesen he met right? Monroe is just going to chalk it up to Nick figuring out he sees things no one else can see.
It's always been fortunate. Otherwise they never would have met.
"Yeah you can say that." Nick was freaked out. Don't ask. And why isn't Nick freaked out. Red eyes and fangs are pretty creepy. "Look I just didn't want you running out of here screaming."
Monroe really would like to change back, but if he does Nick will probably stop touching him. So he's just going to stay this way for a little while longer. That probably makes him a horrible person, but Nick's never had a problem being in his personal space before.
no subject
Good boy.
He is being the most earnest.
It's because Nick thinks they're dating. He wasn't dating the first Wesen he saw, so he wasn't going to go touch a complete stranger to try and confirm it. But as far as he's concerned, it's more than okay to touch his boyfriend.
...that's true. Nick'd rather not be normal than not have met Monroe.
"...do I even want to ask what I did?" He pauses, tracking back through the conversation. "Did I have my cop friends ransack your house when I first saw you like this?"
They are not creepy. Not when they're on Monroe. Nick's instincts say he can trust Monroe, he likes Monroe from what he's seen, and he thinks they're dating. All of that means they're not creepy. "Well, it worked. I'm not screaming. It's actually kind of cool."
Nick wouldn't stop touching him if he changed back. But since Monroe hasn't, Nick's going to take this opportunity to completely explore the changes to Monroe's face, fingers trailing over every part. "Is this it, or can you, um. Do the full wolf thing?"
no subject
No good boy. Ever version of Nick has no self preservation!
Damn it.
Monroe wishes he knew about this whole boyfriend thing. It would make things so much easier.
See. They can be freaks together. None of their kind would accept him anyway.
Well apparently Nick's detective skills are stills in full swing. Monroe shifts awkwardly. Honestly is important right? "Yeah, that's pretty much it."
"Cool?" Monroe looks at him like Nick just grew another head. Cool? Really? He has fangs!
Still more confused face, but at least it's lessened Instead of a 'Nick grew another head' confused and more of a 'did you you just say that' look. "Full wolf? You've never asked me about that before." Monroe is pretty surprised about this. Nick never asked about it before. So either he knew already or he wasn't interested.
no subject
Triumph.
Nick'll probably let it spill soon. Call himself Monroe's boyfriend or something equally condemning.
They don't need the rest of their kind to accept them. They accept each other.
They are, because Nick easily picks up on that awkwardness. "Oh. I, uh. Yeah, no wonder you said I was a prejudiced bastard. But I'm not that way anymore, right? I mean, obviously I'm not, or we wouldn't have any kind of relationship?"
Nick makes a face at him, running his fingers over the point of Monroe's ear again. "Yes, cool. It's fangs and red eyes, man, this is the kind of stuff people design for comic book characters and stuff. Besides, you said you weren't bad, and I don't think I'd be with you if that wasn't true."
That's a much better confused face, though Nick is starting to wonder about how often he's apparently confusing Monroe. "I haven't? But I thought you said you were the one who told me about the, uh." He frowns, trying to remember the word Monroe had used. "'Wesen' world?" He pauses, realizing Monroe didn't answer his question. "Can you?"
no subject
Monroe hates him.
Well that will make things less confusing. And a lot more awkward.
That's all freaks need. That and cuddles.
"Uh, I was just joking about that." No really Nick is good at his job. He's too busy trying to reassure Nick that he's good at his job, and not species-est. "You don't jump to conclusions anymore. You just arrest the bad ones."
When he can. But that's not the important part.
Monroe tries his hardest not to lean into Nick's touch. Why does Nick have to rub around his ears?
No now it's confirmed. Nick is an idiot. "I'm no comic book hero. That's your department."
"No. I mean, I do. And yes it's wesen. It's just you never-" Monroe cuts off. This isn't working. "Yes I can. Turn into a wolf."
