hint: i'm a martian and also for some reason i'm still aw...ake...
her questions, those words, whatever they are after that, go right over his head. decades, no, centuries of one-sided conversations, and perhaps all he wished for was an answer from anyone, anything --
but now he's gotten it and jack finds, quite foolishly, even as the beginnings of a smile begin to curl at the corners of his lips, that he's not quite prepared. ]
I - you - you're serious, right? You can hear me, too?
....Mars has a weird timezone. And I'm betting NZ or australia...
Yeees?
[The vowel is drawn out and she sounds a bit unsure. And honestly, she's not quite sure what he was expecting her to say.]
Do you not get out very often or somethin'?
LMFAO oh close but no cigar :v
[ and as the massive grin he finds himself breaking into is beyond the limits of his control jack is fighting, fighting the urge to do a flip or ten, relief seeping into his features. ]
You're the first.
.....Well then you are either in Asia or Alaska. Or maybe some obscure island country
[She sounds pretty nonchalant about this....]
we...ll Jack never visits here, sooooo
[ the faint sense of ease bleeds sharply away into puzzlement. ]
But you're still talking to me. Hang on, hang on. I don't really understand.
....OBSCURE ISLAND COUNTRY OR ASIA... Philippines? ...Or Hawaii.... (TOTALLY OBSCURE AND A COUNTRY)
[Her eyes narrow in on his feet. He's still shoeless. and she's still wondering how he's not absolutely freezing up in this weather.]
And how can I know who you are if I've never even met you before?
[Alright, she's going to chance getting a little closer because maybe she's the one hallucinating right now....]
Are you okay? Maybe you've hit your head or something.
[Or maybe she had. That was starting to sound like a viable option]
lmfkdkjhg how is hawaii obscure if a martian knows about it
[ but here he catches himself, before he throws this entire thing into awkward valley past the point of no return. it's bewildering, because this isn't how it's supposed to work. first they believe in you, then they see you. wasn't it how that little thing went?
-- well, it sure did, as far as he knew. unless... ]
Okay, I get that this might sound a little strange, but indulge me, all right? [ a breath, and - ] Know of any winter spirits? Any at all?
Idk. YOU'RE THE MARTIAN HERE!
[...and excuse her while she stops mid sentence.]
You're a faery? [Okay, excuse her as she circles around you once more and waves her hands behind your back] I'd expect you t'be a bit smaller, and have wings. And be more... [insert face of confusion here] female.
[Tactful. Completely.]
YEAH IDK MAN martians know everything. because we're awesome and we have space science and stuff.
[ a gust of cold air comes whirling around them both, picking jack up as it leaves and setting him down on the bone-white branch of a nearby tree. ]
Put simply, I'm winter.
..... B| AND SHOULDN'T MARTIANS BE IN BED BY NOW?
But, aren't you a bit young t'be winter? Y'look t'be about my age.
o...h jesus i didn't even realise LMFAO YES I'M GOING
[ a small shrug, ] Guess I just got frozen in time.
/CHASES YOU OFF TO SLUMBER LAND
[That grin would be pretending to be unamused, right there.
She will never admit she is. that pun was just way too uncool. However that look disappears, and something a bit more thoughtful replaces it. She runs up to the base of the tree he's standing in and looks up at him on his branch.]So... no one can see you? Are you all by yourself?
no subject
That's pretty much it, yeah - I mean, it's hard to look for someone you don't even know exists, isn't it? The others don't really like being out here 'cept on their big days, and even then we've got nothing to talk about, really, so it's just me, most of the time.
no subject
...Don't y'get lonely?
(⌐■_■)
no subject
If you're not a faery, what's your name then?
no subject
Glad you asked. I'm Jack Frost.
no subject
[She extends her hand out and gestures you closer]
Why don't y'come down here, then. It'd be much easier t'talk t'you.
[Then there's a bit of a devilish grin.]
Or I could climb up there, if that'd be easier.
[SHE'LL DO IT, JACK.]
no subject
the offer comes as no surprise, and jack can only grin, turning back around to scale the branches, higher and higher. ] Come on up, then.
AND LOOK AT THAT. CLIMBING ICON B]
Aye, just 'cause y'got a head start, doesn't mean you should take advantage of it.
[But there she is, rubbing her hands together to ward of a bit of their numbness, standing in front of the tree. She takes a moment to evaluate the branches and her path up-- then she takes a hold. Her cloak is heavy, but there's no way she's leaving it behind, not with this cold.
One hand in front of the other, feet finding a solid foundation on larger branches. She's not as quick as Jack, but she's making good time]
YOU ARE WELL-PREPARED INDEED, GOOD MISS
[ are they, or aren't they? jack doesn't know, and neither does he particularly care; the thrill of having a mere conversation is enough to make him dizzy with excitement, and he can't stop smiling.
up here the moon is huge, a bright, round disk on the horizon, and for a moment jack thinks that if he squints just a little, maybe he could look past that silvery glow and see the man who's supposed to be there -
but he doesn't, because there is nothing to see, nothing to look for. he's long given up on the possibility he'll ever get his answer, and so jack no longer tries.
in time he reaches the topmost layer just before the flimsiest branches, and here jack stops, perches effortlessly as though a bird, staff in hand. ]
BUT I AM NOT A MARTIAN....
And honestly, she never got the chance to hang out with anyone her age, most everyone she knew was older or a lot younger. Many of them treated her with a bit of distance. Her family was her only respite. And as much as she hated the fact that the triplets could get away with anything-- she was grateful they were around.
Still, meeting Jack was a thrill in of itself.
She manages to steady herself on the branches just below him-- no way was she going to stay steady on the measly things he managed to stand on-- and plops down on some of the sturdier branches, propping her elbows up on another.
She catches her breath, watching it curl like smoke out in the cold winter chill. She tilts her head up to Jack.]
So... how come I've never seen you before? Y'said somethin' about not knowin' you?
THAT'S OKAY THO
I'm not really sure myself, honest. I'd always seen it imperative that people knew my name or at least knew of me before they could see me. [ a shrug, more rustling, and more snowfall. ] That's how I thought it went all these years.
IS IT OKAY IF WE'RE FRIENDS EVEN THO I'M NOT A MARTIAN TOO???
Maybe... it's because I believe in magic now? [She's not sure entirely how to phrase what she's thinking] I mean, I did and I didn't. Thought a lot of it was just stories my mother made up t'placate me as a child.
But then... [A long pause.] Well, I turned my mother into a bear.
[....WELP.]
THAT'S OKAY WE AREN'T RACISTS
[ okay, merida, that there is something even he has to marvel at. ]
How'd you even manage something like that?
....WOULDN'T THAT BE PLANETIST????
