THAT'S OKAY WE AREN'T RACISTS
[ okay, merida, that there is something even he has to marvel at. ]
How'd you even manage something like that?
....WOULDN'T THAT BE PLANETIST????
It ended up turnin' my mother into a bear.
[....did you follow that Jack? She said it kind of quickly.]
SAME DIFFERENCE
Whoa, whoa, slow down. All I caught from that was something about getting married and a cake and a bear.

And that is how you summarize Brave. She takes a deep breath and starts over.]My mother tried t'get me to choose from one of three suitors, to marry them. I tried t'tell her I wasn't ready t'get married, but she wouldn't listen t'me. [She rolls her eyes] She was caught up in traditions and "it's what I've been preparing you for". So... I ran off and found the will-o'-the-wisps in the wood and followed 'em. They led me t'a witch's cottage and she gave me an enchanted cake for my mother to eat. One t'change my mother, t'change my fate.
It turned my mother into a bear. And I had t'change her back.

[ okay, so he's seen his fair share of kids rebelling against their parents, and it's not always pretty, but jack's pretty sure he's never come across anything this bad before. he's not too excited about the air of seriousness that's fallen, though, and so - ]
D'you think the cake might've been for your would-be husband instead? Maybe the old witch'd got her spells muddled up. Whatever the case, though, 'm glad to hear that's cleared up for you.

[Then she smiles up at Jack.] We both've learned to try and listen t'one another more. She's still wants me t'get married, but at least she's willin' t'wait for me t'be ready.
[That cheeky grin returns.] But yeah, after that, I definitely believed in magic. Maybe that's why I can see you now.

-- For what it's worth, you're not the only one who's got trouble seeing eye-to-eye with their parents. Fights happen all the time, though I can tell you for a fact that most of these kids I've seen haven't ever wound up getting their mothers turned into bears. [ a wink, then he continues. ] Still, these things happen. Sure sounds to me like you'd gotten a good ending to that story.
no subject
Yes, I was fortunate. [That moment when she didn't think her mother wasn't coming back still haunts her.] I'm glad that it all worked out the way it did.
[And that's the end of that. She's not sure she's ready to discuss that small portion of her life so readily yet.
Instead she just pulls some hair from her face an manages a smile]
So, I guess this makes me your first friend in a while, doesn't it?

Well, who knows. Maybe more and more people'll be able t'see you, like I can.
[In the back of her mind she's trying to think of people who she could tell-- rather, people who she could tell and would believe her. Even after the bear incident, many of the people within her kingdom were happier not thinking that there had been such direct magic involved. Or that the bear who had tormented their kingdom had once been a prince.
Maybe it was just easier for them to think of it like a fairy tale.]

It'd have the greatest effect on kids, I think. The grown-ups usually have too much on their minds.
no subject
Though...] Maybe my mum too. She's th'one who believes in magic. And-- [A bit of laughter] Well I did turn her into a bear.
[Suddenly she's still, chewing on her bottom lip]
Though, maybe that wouldn't be a good idea. If she hears I'm hanging around with a boy....
[Not to say her mother was just waiting for her to find some nice boy to settle down with...
But yes, her mother was waiting for her to find some nice boy to settle down with.]

[ - and here the sudden change in attitude has him curious. ]
What, are you not supposed to?
no subject
[Just a groan because her mother is ridiculous.]
SNEAKS BACK IN HERE
after a bit he catches his breath, and then: ] But it's nothing like that!
/KICKS OUT.
You haven't met m'mum properly yet, have you?
L E A V E S
[ a brief pause. ]
Meeting her isn't that trying an experience, is it?
/TAPES RIGHT HERE.
[She's teasing.
Kind of.
SHE REALLY HOPES.]no subject
So what exactly qualifies a guy as one, then?
no subject
[Though that was questionable at first. But now her mother seemed much happier just letting Merida decide who she would get along with.]
I'm tellin' you, Jack. She'd get th'wrong idea.

Well, it's not like I have many friends my age in the first place. I guess bein' a princess intimidates them.
no subject
Ah. Well - m'not a princess, obviously - [ a chuckle ] - but I think I can relate.
no subject
I don't know, you'd probably manage th'look better than me.
