[How wonderful it was to return. He is the herald. Yes, he sees himself that way. He has been awakened in advance of the long-awaited return. He is the first sign of what is to come. He can sense it. It is fitting that he should be the first, since he was also the last—faithful to Melkor until the end. Now, there is a new beginning, and there will be a different ending. Sauron still believes in the possibility of victory. It is not the only thing that drives him, but it is one thing. Another is the thought that when Morgoth arrives, he will want to have a place ready for him, to welcome him.
That is why Sauron has begun to reshape this land. A darkness has already fallen upon it, thanks to his influence. Strange creatures live here which did not, before, and there is a heaviness in the air. Many of the native animals have fled. It's all very promising. His power has returned to him, along with his consciousness. He once more has the ability to take a form of his choosing. Every day his power is growing—in response to the approach of Morgoth's return, which he hopes will be soon.
As pleased as he is by his new power and purpose, he is aware that he must be cautious. It is not as if his old enemies have disappeared with time. His warping of the world might well draw their attention, but it is not as if he can abstain from corruption. Instead, he remains watchful of his expanding borders, alert to any flicker of a foreign power that might warrant his attention.]
Sorry I took so long to reply.
When Celegorm returns from a hunting trip fuming about twisted, evil creatures, Maedhros is the brother King Finarfin sent to verify the hotheaded prince’s claim. And verify it, he has. It’s not that he’s seen any creature here yet, outside of the occasional crow. It’s that something about this land feels wrong. Familiarly wrong.]
Not a problem at all!
The atmosphere surrounding him becomes more oppressive. There is a definite sense of unwelcome in the air. Sauron has noticed. He had deliberately chosen an isolated area, with no permanent inhabitants, because he wanted time to build and grow in secret. Nonetheless, he has always expected visitors. This is not Mordor. It is nowhere near so well protected, and his forces are too few to form a reliable guard. This is not the first trespass he has taken note of, but this one somehow seems deliberate. The birds have noted, for his benefit, how this person lingers and watches. It strikes him as significant enough that he has now put in a personal appearance, although he does not reveal himself yet, watching Maedhros from the shadows. There are deep shadows here, beneath the trees.
Sauron's own hroa is still new to him as well. At last he can take a form as fair as he wishes, one that does not instantly instill a sense of dread in all who see him. It is not the same as any form he has taken before. A new era demands a new face—or that is Sauron's preference. His new, fair face is creased by a frown. He doesn't like what he sees. A wind rustles through the branches, and the crow calls again.]
I haven’t played Maedhros in a long time so he takes some waking up.

[As Sauron watches, the more sure he is that he doesn't like what he sees in this stanger. Or—not a stranger, as there is a familiarity there, though it remains undefined at this distance. The important question is: is he going to reveal himself? He could withdraw. He's done that before, pulling back and biding his time, waiting to recover his strength. But why should he? He has no reason for reluctance now, not if he is meant to serve as a herald. Part of him even desires a confrontation of some kind.
With that in mind, he moves in, finally emerging from the dark trees within sight of Maedhros, but ahead of him. He lets himself be seen, then waits to see how this "traveler" will react.]
Eep! This got buried in my inbox!
Who are you?
No trouble! Thanks for getting back to me.
Such a greeting. You demand my name without offering your own?
[Not that he's actually troubled by any rudeness, real or invented.]
No thanks are needed for that!
I believe you are the stranger in this realm, not me. It is only reasonable that you introduce yourself first.

That may be as you see it. I contend I have a right to these lands. You represent no authority I recognize.
[The authority he recognizes is admittedly narrow and puts him in the minority, but he's not intending to amend his ways now. The time for that, though it did once come, has passed.]

[Sauron is still taking his time, enjoying himself. It has been a while since he was able to interact with the Eldar in this way.]
