[They were on Rigax III on a diplomatic mission... and it was fairly straight forward. They were playing ambassadors for Starfleet once again, and this friendly planet and the residents insisted that they stay the night to witness everything they had to offer.
While the festivities were underway, Spock had sequestered himself in the dark balcony, looking up at the stars.... from here he could see the light that was once planet Vulcan.]

[Jim was getting really good at playing Ambassador. The only thing that still bothered him were the damn dress uniforms, and he was convinced they'd been intentionally designed to be the most suffocating, uncomfortable uniforms ever, like some kind of constant reminder that having fun in them was strictly prohibited. Not that that stopped him, of course. He was enjoying himself. The Rigaxian's were extremely hospitable.

Excusing himself from a third dance with a very pretty Rigaxian, he scanned the area for Spock. When he didn't immediately see him, he wandered away from the main gathering, eventually finding himself on a balcony -- and lo and behold there was Spock, gazing up at the night sky. Stepping up beside the Vulcan, he eyed the sky himself for a moment before casting a tentative smile at his First Officer.] Everything okay?

[Spock knew his Captain was drawing near, so he did not bother to look at him when he asked the question.]

Indeed Captain. I desired a 'break' from the festivities. The Rigaxians are a rather tactile race...

[Spock also found the he illogically needed to cool himself down after witnessing his Captain flirting with yet another alien female.]

Though I found myself distracted... the stars are rather pleasing from this planet.

[A soft laugh.] Yeah, they are. Sorry you've had to deal with their customs. We'll be on our way tomorrow though.

[Leaning his forearms on the edge of the balcony, Jim looked back up at the sky. He knew precisely what the Vulcan had been looking at. The remains of his home planet were a distant glow.] Is that your way of saying the stars are pretty? [He was teasing, mouth curved into an amused smile.]

[Spock looks at Jim... his 'human' eyes are sad.] Do not worry yourself Captain.
[Spock looked back up at the stars... ]
You could interpret it as such...they are rather aesthetically pleasing. It is one of the reasons why I was always attracted to space. It was not entirely about science...[Spock realizes that the stars were not the only thing that was aesthetically pleasing out here... But his Captain was obviously only interested in over enthusiastic females....]

[The smile on his lips slipped at the sadness in Spock's eyes. He was so Vulcan, yet so human; his expression could be completely shuttered and yet everything he was feeling and thinking was right there in those liquid brown eyes. Jim subtly shifted closer.] Same. I used to stare up at the sky on the roof of our farmhouse. [But then Jim was wondering if he would ever live up to the legacy his father left behind and if he would ever be able to just get away from everything.]

[Spock's voice was quiet...]

I...used to sit out in my mother's garden and watch the stars. For many years it served me better than meditation. [He never got a chance to tell his mother how much he appreciated her garden...

Spock looked down and shuffled his feet a bit. Being this close to Jim in his vulnerable state was rather difficult. He was ashamed at how emotional he was being right now....]

[Jim's full attention shifted to fix on Spock. Seeing him so emotional was rare. It made him think about the way he'd looked when he materialized on the transporter pad the day Vulcan had been destroyed, hand outstretched in the empty place his mother should have occupied, eyes wide and absolutely devastated. It was even more rare for Spock to offer up such personal information, and as much as he didn't want to accidentally upset him further, he was curious.]

I didn't know your mother had a garden. [...make that he didn't know gardening was possible on a desert planet.]

Indeed... her garden was one of the only ones in Shir'kar. She made my father promise that if she was going to live on a desert planet, that she could have the option of being surrounded by 'greenery.'

My father could not say no.

[Spock steps closer to Jim.... ] You can see earth from here as well...

It must've been beautiful. [His gaze briefly swept over Spock, noting the step closer. He nodded.] Yeah. It's, um...

[Looking up, he quickly located the point of light that was Earth and pointed at it.] There. [Astronomy had always been his best subject.]

[Spock looks up to where Jim is pointing... and his eyebrows crease....]

It was... [Though now Spock sounds distracted...]

From my perspective it looks as though you are pointing at Aiden mark II...

[A grin broke Jim's solemn expression. Without thinking, he grabbed Spock's arm and dragged him closer, positioning the Vulcan right in front of himself. Pointing at the same place, he spoke over Spock's shoulder, breath brushing against his ear.] From my perspective it's Earth. See?

[Spock froze in the embrace that he found himself in...

The breath that ghosted across his ear caused him to shiver. Only in his thoughts was he ever this close to his Captain...]

I...I see Captain.

[It will never fail to surprise him just how much hotter the Vulcan is compared to himself, to humans, and for a moment he found himself distracted by that thought before he realized how close he was, that he'd grabbed Spock. The Vulcan easily could have broken away though, so Jim remained right where he was.] You know, I learn something new about you every day it seems.

[Spock does not move from the semi-embrace... mostly due to shock, however he is also disinclined to remove himself...]

Indeed Captain? What would that be? [He makes sure his eyes stay on the starry curtain above them.]

I dunno, just... things. Little facts I never knew before. [He shrugged slightly.] You know, I was going to see if I could talk you into a dance and I realized I don't even know if Vulcans dance. Is dancing illogical?

[Spock lowered his head and looked over his shoulder... he was slightly confused... why would the Captain ever want to dance with him?]

It is not illogical. Vulcans do dance... though it does not happen often. However, as the son of an ambassador it was required that I learn the different actions required at social events... dancing included. I have been trained in most formal styles of dance...

[Spock turns around so that he is fully facing Jim... his back to the railing.
He tilts his head...trying to figure out the situation.]

[Spock's confusion was obvious, and Jim couldn't help finding it adorable. Not that he would ever tell the Vulcan he thought he was adorable. When Spock turned to face him, it left them bare centimeters apart. Closer than they'd ever been save the times one of them had shoved the other out of harm's way, or the times Jim leaned over the science station to see what Spock was up to.]

So, since you do dance, what are the chances I could talk you into one with me?

[Spock looks over at the crowd back in the main gathering room...then back to Jim's face...]

Very well Captain, I am amenable to this suggestion... however, I would rather avoid the crowd...

[Victory! He grinned again.] That's fine. We can dance out here. The music's still audible and it's prettier out here anyway.

[Though how to dance became a problem Jim deliberated. They were already close, and the music was slower, so he steeled himself and slung his arms over Spock's shoulders.] Is this okay?

[Spock's eyes widen, and his face stains green....

....and he has no idea where to put his hands....]

I...uh....

[Speechless Vulcan is speechless....]

[Spock was... blushing? Obviously such close and personal dancing wasn't part of what he'd been taught. Jim dipped his head to try to hide the way his grin widened.] Hold on to my waist, Spock.

[Spock found speaking at that moment rather difficult.... so he decided to just place his hands where instructed.

When he had said dancing, he meant the formal ball-room dancing... not this. But he was disinclined to mention anything.]

[Spock's hands are tentative, just barely-there contact at Jim's sides. They start to sway to the music, Spock just barely managing to keep them in time... Tense Vulcan was tense....]

oh boy... should I leave you alone? XDD
