Mod Post: Discussion Time

discussion post banner

We have a Problems post but it's not an ideal place for discussion. So here's a post to voice your opinions of anything regarding Bakerstreet.

A couple of anons were asking after moderated posting or stricter rules about how often a meme can be posted.

That's one topic that can be discussed here.

Remember to play nice!

i get your hesitance for moderated posting, but i dont think it should be like a crazy hassle sort of thing. just approve posts if there isnt an identical one that was posted in the last week, and maybe try to have a more even balance between shipping and gen. the only problem is if you don't think you can stay on top of it, which is a fair concern. i'm sure plenty of people would volunteer to help out with that. i'd be happy to, as well as others i'm sure you probably know better.

i love the idea of an 'ideas' meme every month or so though. it's a good pulse check.

just throwing it out there:

If a meme gets less than ~10 top level tag-ins, it can't be reposted again for a specified period of time. Maybe 2 weeks? Feels like we get a lot of reposting of a half dozen memes that never get any hits, and they clutter up the first page with nobody playing on them.

Edit: Just read the linked comment to the problems post and yeah, exactly that.

i like this idea too! my only problem is it'd be hell to keep track of from a moderation standpoint. less than 10 tag-ins in what amount of time? tracking every post like that is hard, especially bc there are so many similar but juuuust different enough to slip by memes under the current rules.

it'd be a snap with moderated posting, though.

completely down with pushing some meme repeats to 2 weeks or once a month. just glancing at the front page I realize that the covered in blood meme has been going up weekly instead of rarely, taboo goes up every week, pregnancy is always once a week...the fuck. if the only way to slow someone's roll is to only post every two weeks then sign me up, I'm all for it.

A/B/O Memes

[personal profile] unknown20troper 2019-02-09 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there any A/B/O memes?

I love A/B/O a lot, and I haven’t really found much of anything for A/B/O RPing on DW. So yeah, if anyone knows of any A/B/O memes (or wants to make any if there aren’t any in existence already), I would be really thrilled if they posted them here (or anywhere else on DW, for that matter).

Have to agree with this comment: could we maybe integrate the shipping, AU and general picture prompt memes?

Right now, the schedule alternates the shipping picture prompt meme one week, then the gen/AU picture prompt meme the next — but the gen meme is pretty multi-purpose and non-restrictive for those who want to play or prompt AU or shipping scenarios, while the AU/shipping-exclusive memes are much more targeted.

Having an integrated picture prompt meme that asks players who top level to state if they're OTA or only interested in gen/AU/shipping prompts would mean everyone gets a chance to play their particular flavor every week.

The shipping pic prompt meme is redundant when you can just specify if you're up for shipping in your top level, imo, and in the end it means less people top level and tag in. I've personally done AUs and shipping myself in regular pic prompt memes, so I don't think it's considered out of the ordinary, either.

I had this vague idea, of maybe limiting smaller traffic memes to once a month.

But, there should be a sticky post at the top of BS dedicated to putting active memes in comments. So you post a meme, and make a comment there with a link to the meme. That way people can easily keep track of the memes that are only posted once a month and they can still get some traffic through there even when they fall off the front page.

Then it would be the meme poster's job to edit the comment with new link whenever the meme is posted again. If they fail to do this or someone else posted the meme, it's still easy for mods to delete the comment. (There would have to be a rule to not comment to comments, because then you can't edit and also prevents clutter.)

Basically make it easier to find memes for people who're in the mood to rp. Having them in comments in one top post like this will give them the feeling of still being active and worth tagging to, I think. You'd simply have to keep the post clean.

(Obviously you'd still have to decide what is a lower traffic meme, but perhaps a case-by-case basis for this can be decided.)

I dig this- Having one stickied post people can reply to and link things to themselves, this would actually be super awesome. It'd be a good opportunity for people to find journals they've thought about tagging but haven't seen around recently, or would feel to awkward to tag on a meme older than the first page.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but is it possible for players who have banned to receive some sort of chance for a repeal of their ban? Not everyone is the same person they were five or ten years ago, and a lifetime ban for being a dummy when they were a teenager feels a bit harsh.

Especially if they were banned here for being banned previously at a different open post/meme or game comm!

A meme category I'd like to see

[personal profile] spectrumseed 2019-02-14 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
So we have "reverse XYZ prompt" memes, where top level makes a blank comment and people tag them with XYZ prompts, then top level picks a prompt and makes a starter.

I haven't seen non-reverse "XYZ prompt" memes, where, I'm assuming, top level provides XYZ prompts and people pick a prompt and make a starter.

I'd love to see those, just because I'm canonblind to a lot of stuff and it would be nice to have something else to go on when tagging strangers.

(I generally like memes where top level at least provides some kind of idea to go off of for this reason, and I think it would help prevent "musedumping", where someone just dumps all their characters in as top levels then never tags out.)
