THE ALPHA/BETA/OMEGA MEME

In our world, sexual roles are commonly defined by genders -- male or female or other, by sexualities -- gay or straight, bi or asexual or in-between. But what if they were defined by something else entirely?

Alpha/Beta/Omegaverse is a fusion of fanfiction tropes and animalistic behavior. In this world, sexual roles are divided into three categories: the Alphas (the dominant, the protective and the aggressive), the Betas (ordinary humans) and the Omegas (submissive, fertile and able to carry children).

ROLES:
1 - The Alpha.
* Stereotypically type A personalities.
* Anatomically: Males have a penis; females may have a penis in addition to a vagina.
* Alphas knot their mates, meaning that the base of the penis swells and locks them inside their mate while they produce copious amounts of semen in an effort to breed.
* Strong sense of smell.
* Near an Omega in heat, they experience a compulsion to mate that is almost impossible to overcome.
* Alphas may go into rut, which is their equivalent of Omega heat, and drives them to mate.

2 - The Beta.
* Ordinary human being.
* Males have penises; females have vaginas.
* Can mate to anyone.
* Might be able to smell hormones of Omegas and Alphas, but will not be overwhelmingly affected by them.

3 - The Omega.
* Stereotypically submissive, quiet, intelligent and less physically able.
* Female anatomy is similar to Betas; males are self-lubricating and may have either an external or internal vaginal setup.
* Regularly go into heat, which involves being overcome by the urge to mate. They are unable to consent while in heat.
* May be made compliant by a bite to the neck. However, that may also induce a mating bond.
* Often regarded as second-class citizens or prizes to be won.

SITUATIONS:
1 - Bonding - Love at first sight. You've spotted your soulmate. You can smell them, you can feel them, you know that they'll be with you until the end of your days. Unless there's something between the two of you. It could be age - maybe one of you has to wait until the other has reached maturity. It could be that the bond is one-sided, and the other has yet to fall in love. It could be an unwanted bond, or society could have divided you into different places. Is your love strong enough to conquer?

2 - Heat/Rut - The need is coming on you strong. Everyone for a half-mile around can smell it. Better find someone to ride it out with, or hole yourself up in a room with a few bottles of water and a durable sex toy. And you'd better hope that there isn't someone out there who will take advantage of your pliable state. Best case scenario, there might be a Beta who can take care of you, or fend off anyone too predatory.

3 - Pregnancy - Whether through a heat or not, you're pregnant. Congratulations - or condolences. Is it time to start a family, or time to start panicking?

4 - Suppressants - You're using suppressants to keep yourself on an even hormone cycle, skipping heats, or maybe pretending to pass as a different class of society. After all, Omegas might want to be in the military, where they're not usually allowed - or an Alpha might want to take a job in a university or as a nurse. Shouldn't they be allowed to, if their hormones are suppressed? Just hope that you don't miss a dose.

5 - Mistaken Identity - That friend that you always thought was an Alpha, or an Omega, or a neutral Beta, turns out to be something entirely different, and your world is turned absolutely upside down. Does it challenge your preconceptions? Or does it just ruin the balance between you two?

6 - Unlikely Pairs - After all, there's no actual reason that Alphas have to mate with Omegas. Maybe two Omegas can satisfy each other. Or two Alphas. Or your intended mate could easily be a Beta. Maybe this is just about breaking out of your pre-established role and becoming something new.

7 - Manifestation - In some cases, an individual may not know they are Omega, Beta or Alpha until their first heat/rut/manifestation, usually happening in early teen years. It may take you by surprise; it may be a blessing, or may be a deep disappointment.

8 - Other - Adventures in getting jobs, making families, fighting bad guys, and anything else you can come up with!.

What most people didn't know about the Valkyries was that, despite their status as fierce warriors, many of them were, in fact, omegas. It was something they kept to themselves because it wasn't something anyone else needed to know, as they were fully capable of taking care of their own, and the stories of how new members joined their ranks weren't outright lies, but they were most definitely embellished.

But she'd been the only one left for a very long time.

While under the Grandmaster's employ she'd had ready access to suppressants -as well as any other drug she could possibly want- and no one questioned it, because scrappers didn't really want to go around making little scrapper babies after all.

But now? Things were different now. They'd made it out, they'd settled in what seemed to be some vast Midgardian snowfield, but it suited them, and they were doing well enough as a whole that she'd settled into a routine, enough so that it didn't occur to her she was no longer halting her cycles, and when she felt the familiar warmth building at the base of her spine and the hollow of her throat, felt that familiar looseness in her joints, she tracked him down, not quite cornering him, but something close, "Thor. I need your assistance with something." She had no doubt that he could tell just what it was, had probably smelled it on her even before she'd strode right into his personal space, "And if you decide this changes anything between us, I can still end you."

[ it's been a hot minute since steve had anything approaching a rut. he's been popping industrial grade suppressants since he stepped out of the rebirth chamber, and even before then, well ... with his health, it was hit or miss. (who has time for that stuff, anyway?) but he remembers - vividly - what the uncomfortable spark thrumming like low-level electric current beneath his skin, and the insidious little twitches near the base of his abs portend.

he's known this was coming for days, since his dosage lapsed and he caught a hint of buck's oncoming heat. (and damn, he's never in his life experienced anything as intoxicating as the scent of bucky barnes.) but he's kept quiet about the tension that's slowly begun magnetizing the air inside the little safehouse - as if by mentioning it, he'd speak it fully into existence.

steve's not one to ignore the practical, but he doesn't know how bucky feels about any of this. and frankly, it's not a topic he intends to be the one to broach.

all those years ago, he was a scrawny little shrimp with circulation so bad he couldn't even get it up. now, ... his fingers are curled tightly around the back of the antique chair near the fireplace, deeply denting the fabric, threatening to splinter the wood beneath. his posture is ramrod straight. his broad shoulders are stiff enough, parallel enough to the ground to build brick walls on - and still enough that those walls would hold. he keeps his back to bucky. decidedly continues to ignore the way buck's breath has started to go shallow, and the way the scent of him's filling the room, strong enough, now, to ping steve's hind-brain and awaken something feral, predatory.

the last thing in the world he wants to do is make a move that could make buck feel uncomfortable, pressured. and he would do literally anything to prevent anyone - including himself - from taking advantage of buck, in this state. ]

Think I better go for a walk. [ his voice is dark, and so are his eyes, trained on the crackling fire. the evening's steady downpour continues hissing against the windows outside, as if mocking him. he clears his throat, and doesn't look back at bucky. he's certain if he did, if he caught another glimpse of that glaze in his eyes, or the sheen at his brow, or the way his lips already look kiss-swollen, then he might do something he'd regret. there's a moment's hesitation, as he breathes those thoughts away, composes himself anew. ] You be all right here, for a while?

The headaches were getting worse. His right hand had begun to tremble just the slightest. But these were minor irritations to the fire beginning to smolder through his blood. The Soldier - Bucky? - closed his eyes, gave his head a brief shake, then opened them again, unerringly drawn back to the other occupant of this small, out of the way room: the man who'd called himself Steve, a friend. Who was still unconscious on the room's only feasible piece of furniture, a small cot bereft of blanket or sheet.

Why he'd drug the dead weight away from the river, he still didn't know. There'd been no parameters revolving around the decision; it was one he'd simply made right there on the spot. Chilled, soaked, dripping, and hurting, he'd hauled the "Captain" out of the water and up onto the bank, staring at his (un)familiar countenance until necessity demanded he get out of sight. They'd be looking. Even though their grip on SHIELD had been broken.

Nostrils flared.

He felt his thoughts disjointed, scattered, aimlessly wandering over the white landscape of his mind, seeking a foothold, an anchor to grip. Steve. Friend. Bucky. He scowled, staring at the bare floor. The end of the line. This was it, wasn't it? Nowhere else to go; stuck here until the other woke up or died, whichever came first. But he was getting...twitchy. Paranoia was familiar; his ears missed very little outside of this barely-secure place.

Scent of...cinnamon, fresh leaves in autumn - familiar. He jerked to his feet, needing to pace, needing to stalk, needing to...prowl. His blood heated, his entire body a-tingle with unfamiliarity. Not again. Unbearable, this pain. Not again, please, not again. But the scent, God, it was thick in his nose, making him want to sink his teeth into...meat. Flesh, give it to me.

He needed the other to wake up. To tell him more. What was happening, what had happened...what was going to happen now? A purred growl escaped before he could stifle it, and the Soldier veered off course in his pacing, only to deliver a smart kick to the edge of the cot; wake up, Captain. Wake the hell up.

One of these days Alanna would stop getting herself in trouble with rival gangs. But that day was not today. Nor was it five days previous when she'd actually gotten in trouble.

She'd even gone so far as to get herself out of trouble again this time, she hadn't needed the rescue, something that she'd already told her passenger-slash-copilot whose own fighter was stashed in the barge's cargo hold. In fact, she'd already said it twice, and counting, "I had it under control, I didn't even message you this time! Don't know why you decided to come charging in like the damn cavalry, and don't try to tell me you were just in the neighborhood."

It hadn't yet occurred to her that probably the reason she was getting as testy as she was, was because five days without her regular dose meant that she was anywhere between twenty four and thirty six hours from being dumped into an entirely inconvenient heat cycle, and judging by the way she kept wiping clammy palms off on her pants every few minutes between switching controls, it was probably dangerously close to that twenty four hour span.

Dystopian military au with a side of designation hiding and pending heat

[ There are a few things that bear consideration about poverty in a place like Haven.

The first is that Rey doesn't read or watch the news because between her three jobs she doesn't have time or energy and her data plan is small and precious. And the news is mostly propaganda bullshit anyway, telling them how great the First Order government is and how lucky the people are to be saved from the chaos. Still. It's occasionally useful. If she were the kind of person who read the news, she might have known her trip to the pharmacy was unwarranted.

The second thing to understand is that she can only afford suppressants through her lackluster insurance, or from the pharmacy across town. So she goes across town because it's (1) cheap WITHOUT notifying her insurance, and (2) hard to find.

No one at work knows she requires suppressants, and as long as she can get them, no one at her work will need to. She likes it that way. No messy heat leave, no judgment, no criticism. It's hard to keep a job as an omega, and harder to keep a prestigious internship that isn't paid without those jobs. If her insurance goes up because they need to cover an omega, she'll get fired. If she gets fired, she can't afford to intern with Leia Organa, failed rebellion hero turned philanthropist.

So imagine her surprise when she gets to the counter to discover that the pharmacist is saying they can't fill prescriptions without insurance anymore. That the cost is going up. Rey is already a week overdue because her paycheck hadnt processed from Plutt's garage--now this? Dread wells up as the pharmacist tells "Kira" she's sorry, but "Kira" keeps thinking that if Plutt had just paid her on time...

The pharmacist directs her to an omega specific clinic. Rey declines but takes the card anyway. She's in a rush anyway. She needs to get to a meeting at the Army of the First Order (AFO) offices to arrange a color guard for Leia's next benefit dinner. It makes the First Order look good to allow her to operate, and she insists it puts pressure on them to remind them she's still got support. Rey believes her.

So she makes her way into the offices with a heavy coat trying to mask her scent, which is quickly pushing through the last of the suppressants in her system (Leia never would have scent an omega to an organization so packed with alphas if she had known, dammit), and the attendant directs her to the only Captain free to organize the dispatch of a unit-- Kylo Ren.

She sits in his office to wait. ]

[ Theirs has always been a messy pairing.

June wasn't too keen on letting Minjun in on the fact that he was an Omega to begin with. It just fed into a lot of complexes he already had, and the last thing he probably wanted would be for Minjun to suddenly act differently toward him. Not that he did once he found out, but the possibility was always there. Of course, finding out June's actual designation came as something of an accident, mostly involving the suppressants the other man had been on running out without him realizing. They sure did have a night that night, Minjun coming home to June trying desperately to get himself off in a satisfactory way in bed.

Of course, smelling that much Omega in the air had turn a switch in Minjun as well. There was a lot of talking the next day as the bruise at the back of June's neck healed.

Minjun honestly didn't mind the accidental bonding, even if it had taken a lot of effort on his part to reassure June that it was all okay, that it was something he was perfectly happy with even. Even now he isn't entirely sure June's completely convinced, but at least he isn't trying to run away anymore.

He stretches as he climbs out of bed and slides on his slippers to pad into the kitchen, pausing in the entryway when he discovers the scene in front of him. There's June, already up and around and... furiously cleaning every visible inch of the kitchen.

Oh, boy. Maybe he should go put on a shirt. ]
