Tell a story in one sentence

Inspired by our muse community musebysentence . We know that not everyone is interested in joining comms, so we thought we would host a meme based on our community concept and if it is successful, possibly make it a monthly thing. If anyone enjoys the meme, they are welcome to join us on a regular basis at musebysentence , where we offer weekly prompts for muses with open membership. Muses tell their stories in a single sentence about any facet of their life, with first person or third person stories welcome. Sentence stories can be a stand-alone post as merely a snapshot of your character's life, or also act as kick-offs for open RP in response to the sentence like other like RP comms out there, which is our premise for this meme today. Sometimes, a single sentence can paint a bigger picture. Select from one of the 100 prompts below from our prior prompt sets and write a single sentence story for your muse as your starting point. It can literally be about anything. It can be in first person to kick off a conversation, or third person to kick off a whole scene. The choice is up to you. Snapshot a tiny piece of your character's life and others are welcome to tag replies to it. Alternatively, much in the spirit of TFLN, you may prefer to "borrow" a sentence for a starting point from www.onesentence.org that suits your character. If you do, please just note at the bottom of the post a credit to this site so we are aware it's not your own original work just out of courtesy. "He demonized a man who might have saved the city," he agreed, twisting words because it was the easiest way to get a response from someone. "Perhaps because he too knew that Gotham was beyond saving.

He took a step closer. "Would hitting me make you feel better? Would punching the man pointing out the truth make it better to swallow the lies they've fed you?"

"Yes," and John knows beyond a shadow of doubt that he's being stupid, ridiculous, reckless. But, hell. It would make him feel better.

Bane's head cocked to one side, considering that before be spread his arms wide.

"Then surely do so. I will not step away this time."

He waited, offering him a shot without anger. Oh not, that would not serve him nearly as well.

He clenches his fists at his side. "Yeah, but you're gonna kill me if I do." And that's not going to do him any good.

“I did not snap your neck a moment ago,” he noted softly. “It would do me no good to kill you. If you wish to hit me, do so,” he said, tilting his chin just so, offering the shot. Killing him would not do nearly as much damage as the blow he wished to deliver mentally. Why else would someone stand still to be hit, even going so far as asking for it?

With that sort of invitation, how could he say no? John takes a moment to look at Bane, eyes narrow in irritation and thought, then lets a fist fly.

Bane did as he said. He didn't flinch away. He didn't react to hit him back. He took the blow, head snapping back. It was a powerful blow, he would give the man that.

And then he leveled his gaze onto Blake once more.

"Does it feel better now? You've taken out your rage at your Commissioner on an innocent man, just as he blamed the Bat for Dent's actions. Do you feel better for it?"

John reeled back, cradling his hand. It felt uncomfortably like punching anyone else, except for the scrape of the mask's metal across his knuckles. But that wasn't what's important. His rage had simply built instead of released.

"I don't like what he did, but I understand it. And it wasn't my rage at Gordon that made me hit you; you did that all on your own!"

Damn, Bane, for making him doubt everything, doubt himself.

Bane stared at him, feeling the pain of it though the medications quickly took care of even that.


“Do you? You understand why he would ruin a man’s life, all to further his own desires? Just as you may deny that your anger derived from anything but my words about a man who you respect, and who deserves none of it.”

He stays still, trembling in fury, despair, torn and confused and hating that. He'd had enough of it growing up, and John had long thought he had gotten over feeling betrayed. But Bane was digging out all his insecurities, all the doubts he had during the occupation, and laying them out in a way that John really didn't want to deal with.

"Stop."

He can't stop shaking.

"Stop it."

"I would think you would want honesty from me. Would you prefer lies? Shall I pretend I wrote that letter? Give you false peace to sleep through the night," he asked, knowing he was pushing the man, perhaps too far.

John shook his head, hard. "I've talked to Gordon about that; it has nothing to do with you. I gave up my position on the Force so that I wouldn't be shackled down by rules and I'm gonna stand by it."

"You quit. So that you could work outside the law. A slippery slope to working against the law, don't you think?" Another tactic, twisting things as he did so well.

"It's different!" John said shortly, folding his arms. He gripped himself tightly, as he bit out the words through grit teeth. "It's for the good of Gotham." It really was easier to convince oneself as one convinces another. John found himself believing in his words more now than he had ever before.

"I am certain the Commissioner told himself the same. He would be different. He would do the right thing. Even with all he has done, do you truly feel Gotham is safer," he asked, taking a step closer, arms held out with his hands raised in supplication.

"It was. Until you came around!"

He hadn't been called a hot-headed youth without reason: he was yelling at the man who had, essentially, single-highhandedly brought Gotham to its knees.

"God," and he sounded almost desperate now, "what do you want me to say? If I admit you're right, would you leave me alone?"

"Was it? How many of your fellow Gothamites were willing to cast off their masks to be their true selves? You can lie to me, but can you continue to lie to yourself," he asked, staying calm in the face of the other man's anger.

"Why would I do that? So you can sink back into lies? Should I allow you to accept that mask for yourself? Would you accept that?"

"I know the city's rotten," and finally, finally he allows himself to say what he's known for ages, "but," and this he believes with all his heart as well, "there's enough good that I'm not going to let you take it all out too!"

He's going to protect the orphanage and the boys if it kills him.

There was a look in his eyes that not many might see. It was pain, and pity. Bane made a sound, shaking his head slowly.

"Do you know where such ideologies take you? Where it will leave you when you lose it all? You will perhaps live on and yet there is nothing alive about you. You would give that all without knowing it is worth it?"

For Bane he knew. She had been worth it. Even if now he had nothing. It was something he was still working out for himself.

There's a moment of pained, uncomfortable silence before John speaks. "Is that what happened to you?"

He considered that answer for a long time, watching the other man. He thought of the moment when she had gained her freedom, the flashes of pain and misery until she returned. Sometimes it blurred together. Other times each moment came to him in stark clarity. None of it had left him without what he lived for. Until now.

"For the time being, yes. Your friend, the Bat, has taken away from me my ideologies. Yet I know they were worth it, and I will stand by them." His ideals, not her. He couldn't, wouldn't, give up that much. Not if he could avoid it.

"That sucks." And it isn't really the most eloquent, but he wasn't about to say that he's sorry. "So, what now? We'll both stand by what we believe in and it's a stalemate?" Except not really because Bane's about the size of two Johns.

"For many people life always sucks, as you put it. I was fortunate enough to have so much more for so long."

A brow arched. "What will happen is you will go on your way and I on mine. I suspected we shall both live a lonely, possibly futile existence as we both seek what no longer exists. I would reccomend not telling others of this talk. It would be a shame that you have come this far only to be locked away for talking with a dead man. No one wants to believe I have survived, so who would listen?"

"Maybe some people'll do something about it." John presses his lips together. "Maybe people'll listen if it's from Batman."

A brow jerked at that and then his eyes narrowed. "Planning to take up the cowl literally," he asked, not sounding as if he expected that. "You would drag yourself down with what he has done poorly for this city?"
