Tell a story in one sentence

Inspired by our muse community musebysentence . We know that not everyone is interested in joining comms, so we thought we would host a meme based on our community concept and if it is successful, possibly make it a monthly thing. If anyone enjoys the meme, they are welcome to join us on a regular basis at musebysentence , where we offer weekly prompts for muses with open membership. Muses tell their stories in a single sentence about any facet of their life, with first person or third person stories welcome. Sentence stories can be a stand-alone post as merely a snapshot of your character's life, or also act as kick-offs for open RP in response to the sentence like other like RP comms out there, which is our premise for this meme today. Sometimes, a single sentence can paint a bigger picture. Select from one of the 100 prompts below from our prior prompt sets and write a single sentence story for your muse as your starting point. It can literally be about anything. It can be in first person to kick off a conversation, or third person to kick off a whole scene. The choice is up to you. Snapshot a tiny piece of your character's life and others are welcome to tag replies to it. Alternatively, much in the spirit of TFLN, you may prefer to "borrow" a sentence for a starting point from www.onesentence.org that suits your character. If you do, please just note at the bottom of the post a credit to this site so we are aware it's not your own original work just out of courtesy. "I think you need something new to live for," and with that, John turns and runs. He doesn't expect to get far, but he has to try.

Yet Bane let's him go. He has little doubt that if he sought the boy out again, that he could find him. The words struck deep in his heart yet they were true. He just suspected that what he chose to live for would not bode well for the Gotham he kept trying to save.

His steps slow, then stop at the door, John turning to look back when he didn't hear the sounds of Bane chasing him. The man stood alone in the dark, barely lit, and looked...lonely. "Hey," he yelled, despite that little voice in his head telling him how stupid this is. "Uh. ...Good luck. I guess." What the hell. "Just don't kill anyone or I'm coming after you!"

“You would do better with joining me than hunting me down,” he said softly, putting it out there plainly and openly. “I’m sure you’ll gasp and panic and be frightened by the very idea but if you wish to save Gotham, even you must realize the folly in allowing it to continue as it is now. You are intelligent enough to see it does have things, people, that must be purged.”

Bane's rumbling voice, quiet as it was, traveled well through the warehouse and John caught every word. He sighed. "I'm going to slowly get rid of the rotten parts," he admitted for the first time aloud, "But one at a time. Not all in one go." The distance between them, right now, made it easier to think, easier to stay calm.

“Alone? You will do this alone,” he asked. With that he moved forward, slowly as one would approach a skittish animal. No threatening signs. There was a time for fighting, there was a time for war. Bane knew such times. He always knew when there was time not for peace, but strategy.

“Alone against all of the evil that Gotham has to offer. They will have you killed within the first month if you do this alone,” he said, mind already formulating a plan. “Where would that leave Gotham then?”

"Hey," he scowled, "It's been two months and I'm not dead yet. Besides, I'm not taking up the cape and cowl." John shrugged, half-turned so he could see Bane more easily as the large man moved slowly through the light. "I'm not legend enough for that."

He scrubbed a hand through his hair, then went on. "I'm just doing what I can, okay? That's all I ever planned on doing."

“No, you’ll try and do it subversively. You’ll have nothing to fall back on when they decide you’re a threat to their sick and infected way of life,” he said, not moving closer, not presenting himself as a threat. “But a legend is built by image and not deed. If you were to do as he did, they would accept you though would it do anything more for Gotham than he did? Do you think he couldn’t have saved his reputation from Gordon’s lies?”

He made a sound that was much like a sigh. “Why would you not do more if you could?”

"He didn't want to," John said, quiet. "It was-- That's why. He did what he thought was necessary, what both he and the Commissioner thought were necessary for the good of Gotham." He swallowed, tried for a smile that came out more like a grimace. "Besides, I'm never going to be the Batman. I don't want to be him. People should remember him as the guy who saved us, and if I show up looking like that, they're going to forget."

"They're going to forget anyway," he said, voice almost softer than it was as if he was breaking a truth he almost regretted having to tell. "They never remember these things. The good is forgotten and the bad vilified until it is celebrated. Eventually they will forget him. They will forget them all, and all that was done, and I will be their hero in the memories they cling to because I promised hope," he said, meaning every word. "No matter how you see my actions, they will one day see it as a hope lost, and they will blame them all. Including you."

"You tried to blow us up," he snapped, "that is not heroic." He shudders once, a full-body shiver. "I'll take the blame, then. I don't care. But people are going to remember Batman and they'll remember him as a hero and I'm not going to let anyone fuck that up!"

"But I will be. You know the way mankind works," he said, taking a step closer. No threat, merely moving closer. "They will remember what they should. Freedom. A chance to change this city. And they'll remember those that have worked for change and those that worked to keep the status quo. Which of those do you want to be remembered as?"

"I don't need to be remembered," and it's mostly true. Mostly.

"You should be though. If you are putting your life out for this city, why would they remember me a hero and ignore you?"

"Because," and now John has gotten exasperated again, "you made yourself a public figure. You wanted to be remembered. I don't care that much, I just want to do something to help."

"What is it you want," he asked, eyes narrowing as a furrow curved his brow. It was obvious he was honestly curious. "And I had to be the public figure as she could not be."

"She?" And then he remembered, the quiet, heartbroken murmurs of Mr. Fox and Alfred, the helplessness that sometimes filled Gordon's eyes when he thought no one was looking. "You mean Miranda Tate."

His chin lifted, just slightly as he slid his hands to his hips. It was a posturing gesture, trying to hide the pain he felt at mention of Talia. "That is how you all knew her, yes."

John scowled, "She played the long con, didn't she."

"I see there are more secrets they never told you," he said, inhaling deeply. He exhaled in a sigh. "Does that not bother you," he asked, not revealing more than he'd already allowed himself in his grief to tell.

Of course it did. "Of course not," He smiled, flat and insincere. "Besides," and this, however, is true, "it doesn't really change anything."

"So you say. Just as you say Gordon's lies don't matter. Yet they must. How can a man of honor, as you seem to think you are, not be bothered by their lies. Or are you not that man?" Again with the needling, glad to turn things away from himself.

"I'm not sure where you got that impression from," John said flatly, "But I'm a hothead, not a moron. I just don't believe in killing for the sake of killing."

"So you wore that uniform and badge why? Because they got you anywhere but nearly killed," he asked, arching a brow.

John glanced down at himself, then back up at Bane, brow raised. "I stopped wearing the uniform not too long after you arrived. I got promoted." It wasn't really an answer, not at all, but it was true.
