Tell a story in one sentence

Inspired by our muse community musebysentence . We know that not everyone is interested in joining comms, so we thought we would host a meme based on our community concept and if it is successful, possibly make it a monthly thing. If anyone enjoys the meme, they are welcome to join us on a regular basis at musebysentence , where we offer weekly prompts for muses with open membership. Muses tell their stories in a single sentence about any facet of their life, with first person or third person stories welcome. Sentence stories can be a stand-alone post as merely a snapshot of your character's life, or also act as kick-offs for open RP in response to the sentence like other like RP comms out there, which is our premise for this meme today. Sometimes, a single sentence can paint a bigger picture. Select from one of the 100 prompts below from our prior prompt sets and write a single sentence story for your muse as your starting point. It can literally be about anything. It can be in first person to kick off a conversation, or third person to kick off a whole scene. The choice is up to you. Snapshot a tiny piece of your character's life and others are welcome to tag replies to it. Alternatively, much in the spirit of TFLN, you may prefer to "borrow" a sentence for a starting point from www.onesentence.org that suits your character. "Was it? How many of your fellow Gothamites were willing to cast off their masks to be their true selves? You can lie to me, but can you continue to lie to yourself," he asked, staying calm in the face of the other man's anger.

"Why would I do that? So you can sink back into lies? Should I allow you to accept that mask for yourself? Would you accept that?"

"I know the city's rotten," and finally, finally he allows himself to say what he's known for ages, "but," and this he believes with all his heart as well, "there's enough good that I'm not going to let you take it all out too!"

He's going to protect the orphanage and the boys if it kills him.

There was a look in his eyes that not many might see. It was pain, and pity. Bane made a sound, shaking his head slowly.

"Do you know where such ideologies take you? Where it will leave you when you lose it all? You will perhaps live on and yet there is nothing alive about you. You would give that all without knowing it is worth it?"

For Bane he knew. She had been worth it. Even if now he had nothing. It was something he was still working out for himself.

There's a moment of pained, uncomfortable silence before John speaks. "Is that what happened to you?"

He considered that answer for a long time, watching the other man. He thought of the moment when she had gained her freedom, the flashes of pain and misery until she returned. Sometimes it blurred together. Other times each moment came to him in stark clarity. None of it had left him without what he lived for. Until now.

"For the time being, yes. Your friend, the Bat, has taken away from me my ideologies. Yet I know they were worth it, and I will stand by them." His ideals, not her. He couldn't, wouldn't, give up that much. Not if he could avoid it.

"That sucks." And it isn't really the most eloquent, but he wasn't about to say that he's sorry. "So, what now? We'll both stand by what we believe in and it's a stalemate?" Except not really because Bane's about the size of two Johns.

"For many people life always sucks, as you put it. I was fortunate enough to have so much more for so long."

A brow arched. "What will happen is you will go on your way and I on mine. I suspected we shall both live a lonely, possibly futile existence as we both seek what no longer exists. I would reccomend not telling others of this talk. It would be a shame that you have come this far only to be locked away for talking with a dead man. No one wants to believe I have survived, so who would listen?"

"Maybe some people'll do something about it." John presses his lips together. "Maybe people'll listen if it's from Batman."

A brow jerked at that and then his eyes narrowed. "Planning to take up the cowl literally," he asked, not sounding as if he expected that. "You would drag yourself down with what he has done poorly for this city?"

"Hey! He tried his best and he saved us. All of us." John didn't actually plan to become Batman--he doesn't think he'd be able to do the legend justice--but he's got a cave of stuff for him to use and he'd be a moron if he didn't try to make a difference in Gotham in any way possible. "He's my hero."

[dissimulation]

"No. Not all of you. Not to mention those he killed. Shall we talk about the police forces that kept you here to die? Or the men he left to Crane's mercy," he asked, arching a brow. "He only came to save Gordon it seemed. That is making a judgment. Will you make such judgments?"

"He came when he could," John was stubborn, and this was a point he wouldn't budge on. "And it was your fault, anyway. You could have stopped Crane's ridiculous judgements!"

[dissimulation]

“I will not argue with you when you are seeking someone to blame. I will not make the argument that a people allowed to be their true selves is what you should have taken from that. All that supported him, all these good people of Gotham that cheered him on, why are you not blaming them,” he asked, arching a brow. “I will bear your blame and allow you to defend the Bat and his murder and weak deeds, but I will not let you ignore that it was not merely myself, nor Crane, that was involved in this. Your good people were as well.”

"I know," John's rising frustration has taken over his fear entirely, "I know, okay? I know some of the people here suck. But destroying the city only means that those of us less well-off are going to have an even harder time of it."

"And now they have a warning. Why don't they leave? Don't you ask yourself that? Shouldn't the good run now that Talia and I are dead," he asked, meaning it. "Have you seen a mass exodus from this city? I haven't."

"Mass panic," he bites out. "Obviously."

So you’re excusing them from staying? From accepting this life after all they’ve seen?” He snorted. “Or are you denying the truth because I’m asking this? If this was Gordon asking this, would you say the same thing?”

"Gordon wouldn't ask," John snaps, "Because he knows better to."

"He won't ask because it means accepting he is one of them and contributing to this. Will you accept that fate for yourself?"

It was pushing, further than perhaps he should, but it was a step in getting back where he needed to be in this city.

"Look," and John takes a step backwards, shifting his weight. "If we're just going to argue in circles, you can pretend I'm not here and talk to yourself. I won't tell anyone about you and you can just...not kill anyone. Yeah?"

"I will do what I must. Taking away all that I have lived for will not stop that."

"I think you need something new to live for," and with that, John turns and runs. He doesn't expect to get far, but he has to try.

Yet Bane let's him go. He has little doubt that if he sought the boy out again, that he could find him. The words struck deep in his heart yet they were true. He just suspected that what he chose to live for would not bode well for the Gotham he kept trying to save.

His steps slow, then stop at the door, John turning to look back when he didn't hear the sounds of Bane chasing him. The man stood alone in the dark, barely lit, and looked...lonely. "Hey," he yelled, despite that little voice in his head telling him how stupid this is. "Uh. ...Good luck. I guess." What the hell. "Just don't kill anyone or I'm coming after you!"

“You would do better with joining me than hunting me down,” he said softly, putting it out there plainly and openly. “I’m sure you’ll gasp and panic and be frightened by the very idea but if you wish to save Gotham, even you must realize the folly in allowing it to continue as it is now. You are intelligent enough to see it does have things, people, that must be purged.”
