[Do you remember how he agreed not to be any harder on himself than he had to be to get the job done, Kaidan? Do you remember how he promised to get a decent amount of sleep from now on so it wouldn't be quite so easy to mistake him for a very well-armed husk?

He may be stretching the definition of "a decent amount" tonight. He can function on three hours of sleep; surely that makes it close enough?

To his credit, he's at least being quiet about it to avoid waking the other man. He slipped out of bed about an hour earlier (for a tall guy with almost as much metal under his skin as the Normandy has in her hull, he can be remarkably stealthy when he needs to be) and is now seated at his desk, scrolling through mission reports and prioritizing tomorrow's workload. Finished with his current datapad, he reaches for the next - and knocks a stack of about a dozen more to the ground.

So much for being quiet.]

[Ashley hasn't forgotten that talk she had with the other Shepard under Soundwave's brainwashing. She just chose to disregard it once she was back to normal and the urge to talk about feelings had passed. There were bigger things to worry about, like homicidal AI overlords, and she and Shepard were over before she even got here.

Ignoring the elephant in the room doesn't often make it go away, though. A lot of nothing is happening on the station of late; she's bored and lonely and used to this place, and that last part scares the hell out of her if she thinks about it too much. The "so, about us" talk is starting to seem like a slightly less terrible idea, and that's what drives her to go find him in his room.]

Too long.

While the matter was of the utmost importance, Stephen Maturin could still feel justified in mourning the time he spent away from Surprise and her captain. His captain. The only man in the whole of the British Navy he would sail under.

Now, had his work been scientific in nature, concerning birds or insects or something of that sort, he might not have felt the absence so very keenly. But when it was intelligence work -- long days spent wandering the mountain villages he had once played in as a boy at his godfather's side -- the nights left him with a peculiar ache, a longing not for the sea but for the company it brought.

But another ship had conveyed him here, under sealed orders, and he had disembarked without anyone the wiser as to the real purpose. He had come aboard Surprise well after twilight, motioning the men he passed to be silent. In typical fashion, he opened the door to the captain's cabin without a knock or "by your leave" and showed himself in.

Edward Burr has tried all his life.

He tried to be a good son, to take care of his mother and find ways to put food on the table even as they struggled to keep a roof over their heads. He tried to be a good sailor, to learn the ropes and his captain. He tried to be a good officer, to know his signals and his men. He tried to be a good captain, to follow orders faithfully and with passion. He tried to be a good husband, to provide for and care for Faith. He tried to be a good father, to dote on his children without spoiling them.

He has tried all his life.

And now, it has fallen apart.

He sits in the cabin of Galatea-- now Nymphe among the crew. The British Navy, no doubt, is looking for them at every turn, ready to hang them all as deserters, at best, and pirates at worst. A stolen ship, a crew who abandoned their country, and a captain who can never return to his home or family.

Alone in his cabin, Edward nurses a single glass of wine. He trusts himself with no more than that. God help him, they are all doomed. And he and Joseph, who must share the blame equally, he fears, have condemned this crew to hang from the yardarm.

...And Remy...

If he is lucky, he will share the former fate, but Edward knows better than to think of such a mercy.

Which is well enough, and fine. He takes time to process these things, everything. He took too long for nearly any tastes, as Maggie'd so keenly noted. It had bent him to take the events of last night in the moment. Broken his mold not to hold her at arm's length, let the trembling air around them move them closer, not her overwhelming willpower, or his battered sense of want. She was a good thing, a darling thing, a baffling thing. He couldn't risk the ruination of that presence in his life.

Forrest finds himself pausing unnecessarily at his morning rituals, at buttoning, at the small mirror, at the top of the stairs. Though the last only so much as to listen for her, head down, breath quiet. Then, irritated by his boyish hesitance, starts down the stairs. ]

[ ... Stupid. That's what all of this is, really - just stupid, as far as she's concerned. Sure, they've been working together for a while now, and even living together, but still.. why does she have to feel like this? She's been trying to deny it to herself now, or rather, she's already been denying it to herself for a while now, but it's really at a point where further doing so would only be unrealistic, right? Because somehow, after relying on him so much and working together with him.. he's become such a natural part of her life. But not just a platonic part, and that's exactly the problem. To think she likes an annoying guy like that.. it's unthinkable, isn't it?

... Right?

At least the Sisters weren't here with or they would undoubtedly have given her bad suggestions about how to confess. Something about wearing nothing but an apron, Ange doesn't doubt Asmodeus would have said that much. But nope, she's unfortunately?! just wearing her regular clothes as she waits in their apartment for him to come home, trying so desperately to keep herself calm. Come on, Ange, it's just a stupid confession, you can do that! ]
