Sentinels and Guides Shipping Meme
A Sentinel!AU Meme
A Sentinel!AU Meme
There are special people in the world: Sentinels--whose five senses are incredibly enhanced, sometimes to the point of overwhelming and who can easily lose themselves in fugue states--and Guides, the empaths with the ability to ground a Sentinel and focus them. Meant to be the protectors of the Guides, for every Sentinel there exists a guide that is their perfect match. In some universes, when matches are made, a Sentinel and Guide form a soulbond to fill the feeling of emptiness.
How easy was it for you to find yours? How are Sentinels and Guides treated in your universe? Or maybe you're one of the normal, unremarkable people. Do you fear Sentinels and Guides? Despise them?

Prompts
oo1. The Meeting:
How did you meet? Was it at an event organized specifically for finding your other half? By accident? Did you follow a mystical calling to them? Some other way?
oo2. The Bonding:
Do Sentinels and Guides in your universe soulbond? How does it go down? Is there a ceremony or do you just retreat to the bedroom?
oo3. Rejection:
Sometimes Sentinels or Guides propose a match but it's just not perfect. You don't feel the pull or maybe you think there is someone better or maybe you're already claimed. Maybe you were claimed and someone better came along?
oo4. Protection:
Sentinels are meant to protect Guides, any Guides, but it's even worse when they feel their Guide is in danger. They go feral; blind to anything but stopping and killing whoever threatened their Guide or the bond. Maybe someone attacked your Guide or you haven't bonded yet and you feel threatened or maybe you're the one doing the threatening. Whatever the reason, Sentinels in a feral state are dangerous and only their Guides can stop them.
oo5. Lost:
Sentinels often lose themselves in their senses. Either you're a Sentinel who has lost themselves or a Guide that has stumbled on one or a friend trying to draw them out. Unbonded Sentinels will find it hard to escape without a Guide. Or maybe you're bonded already which means you just need yours to come home.
006. Persecution:
Sometimes normal people or the government fear the power of Guides and Sentinels. Guides are empaths, feeling the emotions and sometimes passing thoughts of others and it can make people feel violated. Sentinels often have enhanced strength, which can make them dangerous. So they scorn them, hurt them or in the case of governments, regulate them.
oo7. Death:
Unbonded Sentinels and Guides eventually lose themselves to the empty cavern inside them. Torn apart from the inside by the feeling of something missing. Breaking the soulbond of a Sentinel and Guide is agonizing and horrifying, leading quickly to death for the remaining partner.
oo8. Old-School:
Guides used to be treated on the same level as slaves. Unable to work unless their Sentinel said. Not allowed out on their own. They used to wear collars and couldn't own land or inherit money. Maybe the old ways haven't completely fallen out of style.
oo9. Unbonded:
Nothing is worse than being an unbonded Guide or Sentinel. Always looking for your other half to fill that empty feeling but you probably have friends that aren't your match or who are trying to set you up with someone. Maybe you're skeptical about the whole love at first sight thing and haven't been looking.
o10. Wildcard: Some mish-mash of the above or anything else you can come up with!

HERE WE GO canon sentinels & guides so a happier prisontimes-- but first, meeting the lady
(Come to think of it, that's likely why Pellew had encouraged it in the first place, if the idea had come instead from him.)
Seeing Kitty Cobham among the elite, though is a little startling. He can't imagine Horatio doesn't catch the sparkle of surprise when the older woman steps into a view; the even brighter glimmer of it when she's introduced as a Duchess. He manages to stuff it down quickly after so that it doesn't throw his Sentinel off his game.
When he's introduced, he notes the surprise and hint of concern in Kitty's eyes.
"It seems, Mr. Kennedy, that we've met before," she says-- clever Kitty, putting him on the spot like this. Making it likely he'll seem like be a rambling naval officer rather than anyone with a semblance of truth to him, were he to say it now. For a moment, it hurts a little.
But then he notices the plea in Kitty's eyes, and then it feels like trust. There's an abrupt rush of fondness to his smile and in his psyche that Horatio likely will notice-- and hopefully not ask about-- as he bends to kiss her hand once more.
"You are quite correct, Your Grace. My father-- the Earl of Cassilis, Your Ladyship-- would on occasion let my siblings and I to Drury Lane. I do believe we-- became acquainted in the boxes."
And-- there. That far more familiar smile; the gratitude in her grin. That's his Kitty.
"So we must have," she says, all fondness and warmth, "Well, in that case, it's wonderfully good to see you again."
"The sentiment is most certainly reciprocated, Your Grace."
Here, Kitty would have patted his cheek. The Duchess, however, has to be far more austere, and instead she squeezes his hand slightly before letting go.
It doesn't at all change the odd sense of fond warmth in him, as he drifts back to Horatio's side.
horatio is dying but THAT IS SOME CUTE SHIT
Horatio can't imagine how he would have survived without Archie's mind to keep throwing his own against for the slightest bit of safety. Honestly, he doubts he would have been dragged through the door of his own accord without Archie having drilled him on the niceties of Society.
It isn't so bad even when they're briefly separated during introductions. It isn't so bad until the wave of affection he feels tumbling off his Guide is, abruptly, foreign. It's almost like the roiling devotion he sometimes picks up from Archie around Captain Pellew.
But-- it's not.
Horatio can't help the uncomfortable flush that runs up his throat as Archie beams at the Duchess. He can't help the way his own mind tenses in, tight and unpleasant as the ill-fitting stockings he'd been shoved into for the evening.
This, after all, is Archie's world. And it's all right, for a time, to pretend that they belong in the same one instead--that the sea makes them equal, that their bond makes them peers, that their lives might well run together for a long time yet. Pieces of it are true, Horatio allows, but there's no stopping the twist in his gut.
Archibald Kennedy is the son of an Earl when they stand on the shore. And Horatio Hornblower is the son of a surgeon from a tiny market town on the Romney Marsh.
It isn't polite to stare at his own feet, so his attention fixes stubbornly on Pellew's shoulder as Archie steps closer again. There's no use feeling sharp twinges of jealousy when Archie can feel it. There's no good from feeling the weight of his own inadequacy when Archie might notice. Best, surely, to simply shutter himself off and stare absently at the stitches in Pellew's coat.
shhh Horatio let Archie love
There's the lightest of nudges of his elbow against Horatio; concerned and affectionate.
"'ll right, 'ratio?"
he just wants Archie to love hiiiiim ; ;
It's far from convincing, even before the fact that their souls are all but knitted together. Horatio can feel it rushing through his teeth with the same petulant insistence a child might take on in insisting over something trivial.
"Just a bit-- overwhelming."
That sounds a little better. It isn't actually a lie, after all, just as it isn't at all false to find himself relaxing a hair with Archie properly beside him again. The colours are dulling into something less painful. The voices are dropping to something less deafening. It's just, well.
"She's-- quite pretty, isn't she."
That might have sounded conversational. It also might not have.

I just want to play with you again, friend.John's more the Guide type... and one who's probably reluctant to be bonded. You can help more people if you're not beholden to one Sentinel!]no subject
