[ He'd come to in a dark basement room. Whatever spells and potions had kept him docile and kept had worn off. The evil man who'd stolen him away, kept him prisoner while he stole his face... was gone. Graves kicked his way out of the locked room and ran up the stairs, only to find the building above in ruins. He ran out to the street, but the rest of the block was torn asunder as well. Witless and wandless, the only thing Graves can think to do is to make his way to the Woolworth Building and try to get a handle on the situation.

Things are worse than he thought. Half of New York is gone in waves of rubble and torn steel. The Woolworth Building is the only thing standing, with a swirling cloud of inky black dust crowding its upper floors. Inside, dead witches and wizards litter the floor. Graves grabs the first wand he sees, and heads for the roof.

When he emerges into the storm, his worst fears are confirmed. This is the work of an obscurus, one that's grown so powerful it's taken out most of Manhattan. There, hovering in the air above him, is a young man, the center of it all. Graves arms himself and calls out, ] Stop this!

[There's any number of options for this - there's the canonical alternate timeline that Trunks came from (which went through multiple apocalypses between the Androids, Cell, and Zamasu), the inevitable "Goku didn't hit his head and became a minion of Freeza" timeline, Piccolo or Dende dying at an inconvenient time and leaving Earth with no Dragon Balls...

And that's not even getting into the Xenoverse games, which are full of bad timelines where a villain got a boost of power at an inconvenient time or a new villain showed up when the heroes are already in trouble!

[ Regulus doesn't want to be doing this.

But he deserves it, doesn't he? From a lap dog for the Dark Lord to a lap dog for the Order, it's hardly different. It's just one side isn't openly genocidal. Many of Regulus' ideals are just the same as always (you don't take away inherent superiority, after all), but he's never wanted to torture or kill. Which makes his current job all the more ironic. A cruel karmic punishment from a group that hates getting its own hands dirty. That's what Albus Dumbledore does, isn't it? Keeps his hands clean.

Regulus' are stained in mottled shades of red and rust and brown from old sins and new, but it's not going to stop any time soon. They'll never be clean, just compounded over and over and over.

The ends have to justify the means. So he remains steadfast, does what he's told without questioning or flinching or trembling. Other Order members avoid the cold-eyed ex-Death Eater, mostly out of hatred and revulsion but he doesn't care. He knew what he was getting into. Perhaps it's funny on some kind of cosmic level that the first thing he'd been sent to do once his magic behaved again (coaxed so slowly out of his fingers, convincing it that a drowned man wasn't dead anymore - even a brief shutdown before his lungs had been cleared and body jolted back to Earth had scrambled the inherent power in him) was to torture a Death Eater for information.

Confusion and dawning hate had almost made him smile. The job had gone well; he got what he needed and Obliviated the man before dumping him off. It's only at night, alone, that he sits on his balcony and smokes with trembling fingers that let the cigarette dangle until it burns him.

Business as usual today. Someone's been captured and detained and it's Regulus' job to get what they need. It's a small room they use - little more than a chair, no windows. It's impossible to Apparate out of. He usually has a chaperone until they're sure he's doing what he's meant to. Then they stand outside so they don't have to watch his methods. Regulus steps through the door with his escort and looks at his quarry



and stills utterly. He looks at the form lashed too tightly with magical ropes to the chair he's sat in and frowns. When he speaks it's flat and dead sounding, but his voice is instantly recognizable to anyone intimately familiar with it. ]

[ Albus doesn't generally leave his notes laying around. Or, well, he does: there's a set of notes that's all the spells he and Scorpius have created together, potions notes, things of that nature. That set gets left out at home all the time because they're shared. The other set are his private notes, kept hidden and charmed away when he's not using them or carrying them on his person. His personal spells, work at tweaking different sorts of potions from those they share, new potions entirely, certain parts of the notes that had been bequeathed to him. Private. He's not ashamed of them but he doesn't want to argue about them.

He just wants to get done what needs doing.

Today though, he'd been comparing some of both and grabbed the wrong book of the two - they're identical outwardly so that he can work on either set in peace. Because of course they are. He leaves for a little Ministry work in the morning, coiling between and around things that need doing and speaking to people, smiling faces being reminded of how bright and helpful and witty and sharp the Potter boy has become.

It's eleven in the morning when Albus realizes his mistake. He rushes home on an "early lunch", the sound of his Apparating little more than a whisper these days. No tell-tale crack or warble, just a flutter of movement and sound. He wonders if Scorpius is even home: it doesn't matter. He stands before the door and carefully traces intricate runes in the air just in front of it, stepping through so soon as the wards part to allow him. They settle back into place so soon as he's inside.

Breathe. He's settled and quiet as he walks toward the kitchen. There's something heavy in his gut but he's ignoring it. There's no indication of anything amiss. He'll just switch the books back on the table. ]
