the USERNAME meme

Journal names. They're something we all think about, and that we often try to make as fittingly torturous to our characters as possible. Isn't it nice that our characters never have to know they're wandering around with that horrible label attached to them?

...wouldn't it be fun if they did?

RULES

1 Your character is communicating with others through a journal community, just like how we're using them, and they are perfectly aware of that fact. Whether they think that's normal or not is totally up to you.

2 The also know that when they signed on to this community, they were automatically assigned a name that supposedly has something to do with their personality and/or history. They didn't have any say in what that name was going to be, they're just stuck with it.

3 Make a post with your character's reaction to seeing what their own username is. Do they think it fits? Do they hate it with a passion? Are they downright confused?

4 Comment to other people's posts with your character's reactions to everyone else's usernames. If they know the other character, they might have good reason to laugh at them or feel sorry for them. If they don't, this could lead to some pretty interesting first impressions, don't you think?

5 If you want to use a name that's different from your actual journal name, just mark that in your post. No need to create a whole new journal just to make your character's life worse for one meme. ;)

Or just, you know, the fact that that's how this thing is supposed to work.

And it's not like it exactly tried hard in my case, anyway.

A grand coincidence that happened to work out well, then? You can't really deny you'd actually pick something that...obvious.

[Excuse me for not being able to manage whimsy with you around.]

If you say so. Some people take this sort of thing very seriously. It's a reflection of yourself, in a way.

That's stupid. If people want to reflect themselves on something like this it should be with what they post, not the tag attached to them.

Oh, I thought you might say something like that. But there's a lot you can tell about a person by the way they present themselves. Fashion's very similar, but it's obvious you don't put much thought into that sort of thing.

Something like that isn't important, though.

It's who a person is that matters, not the way that you see them.

Well, of course. It's the inside that counts and all that.

[He waves his hand dismissively.]

All I'm saying is that some people deem it important to have that outside reflect their inside...and others then pick up on it.

Yeah, well, I'm not one of those people.

[And, for the record, that dismissive hand-wave is quite possibly the single-most irritating gesture ever. At least until he finds another one of Joshua's gestures to be offended by, anyway.]

[even more irritating than his giggle? Because he's going to be doing that right now.]

Obviously. As I said, you're too straightforward. It's almost refreshing, actually.

[Oh god the giggle. The hand-wave is the most irritating gesture and the giggle is the most irritating sound.

If Joshua did both at once, Neku would spontaneously combust with rage.]

How can it be 'refreshing' when you phrase it like an insult?!

I didn't say it was a bad thing. If you interpreted it that way, it's no fault of mine.

[Now he's feigning innocence. This must be some kind of unholy trinity of Joshua's Irritating Gestures.]

If it's 'too straightforward' then that's too much, and how can you not mean that as a bad thing?

"Too straightforward" to bother with the nuances of fashion or usernames, is what I meant. Try to keep up, Neku.

[Not like Joshua made it easy to do that at all.]

[He still feels like he's been insulted somewhere along the line. Although, admittedly, he's pretty sure that's a general thing for anyone who ever talks to Joshua.]

Either way, how is something like that refreshing?

Well, with everyone trying to project the image they want to be seen as, it's nice not to have to wade through all the layers sometimes.

Maybe if you were a little more straightforward yourself then you wouldn't have a problem.

It's not my fault some people jump to conclusions. Or can't read between the lines.
