Quick update.

Hey [community profile] bakerstreet!

RESULTS FROM LAST WEEK
Okay, so last week we asked you guys your thoughts on how the community is going to be run and anyway I've reached a decision regarding that.

ANONYMOUS WILL BE KEPT ON, WITH IP LOGGING OFF.

That said, if there are anonymous problems that do turn up. Do not hesitate to PM or report it.

NEW MODERATORS! + APPLICATIONS

Welcome in, Chibs ( [personal profile] kostinaya ) and Eri ( [personal profile] vital ) to the moderating team! ♥ ♥ ♥

Anyway, it's a pretty big comm and I'm currently looking for TWO more moderators to make sure we get all the ground covered. If you're interested in applying, I've tossed up an application post.

MODERATED POSTING

Okay, I know it started out very rocky and consider last week a trial period, but we're extending the trial period for another week especially now that there are more moderators. There are a lot of really good reasons why I personally think the meme queue should be given another shot.

— It slows down the community. Some of us are in games, and [community profile] bakerstreet has had a point where it's received fourteen thirteen memes a day. there's some pretty cool raw stats here

— Memes are getting more play.

— Adjust the meme variety. Meaning if, for example, a smut meme gets posted yesterday, we'll try to avoid posting a smut meme today. So the last smut meme that gets posted gets more attention.

— We want to encourage backtagging and playing in older memes. A lot of people won't tag into something just because it's not in the front page anymore.

So since there are going to be more mods now, the queue should be sorted faster with the memes being posted in a wider range of timezones. Anyway, give us another week to try and run with this style. We want something that works for everyone. Which brings us to the question:

HOW MANY MEMES/DAY DO YOU WANT TO SEE?

MEME HEADERS
Okay, so no one in this community wants anyone accidentally triggered. So placing things under a cut, would benefit tremendously. We don't want anyone to feel uncomfortable.

Since what triggers what is subjective there's this list of common triggers that comes at a handy reference. Basically, meme makers, use your own discretion in handling it.

If there's an offending image, do not hesitate to report.

THEPILLOWFORT
a PanFandom Dressing Room
☁ premise
You wake up in a city it doesn’t matter where— a bedroom, an intersection, in a park, just somewhere in a city—and you quickly realize… this wasn’t where you were last. Or maybe you were just passing through on your way to somewhere else…. And couldn’t find your way out. Whatever the circumstances, you’re stuck in a city with thousands of other inhabitants; many are just like you, stuck with no way out.

The Pillowfort is a panfandom dressing room for anyone and everyone to join in on the fun. There will be scheduled events and setting suggestions, however everyone is free to play out whatever universes or settings they want to :]

☁ setting
The Pillowfort is set in a city called… well The City. There is no real name because the locals know no other place. And they will all be amazed by your characters’ stories of “far off places”.

The City is a large-city with no borders. There’s a bay, however the water extends on and on and it’s impassable. It doesn’t matter what language you speak or what kind of dialect you have, everyone can understand you and you can understand everyone else.

That isn’t all that’s strange about this place. Weird things such as setting changes, freak storms, or even monster attacks happen out of nowhere. No one knows how to explain it… and the locals aren’t even that thrown by it. However, new inhabitants should be on their toes. Who knows what’s around the corner!

I agree with 3 - 5 memes a day being posted. It's a decent amount of new stuff to look through without pushing too many other memes off the front.

Though I would prefer 5 more than 3 a day.

I think 4-6 would be a good range. I think at three memes or less a day, you don't have enough variety to appeal to enough people and at 7+ memes a day, there's too much variety and premises can easily get repeated or tired, and memes can get scrolled off before people have seen them, if they have to take a several day hiatus.

Just my two cents.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
it depends on the variety of memes + the popularity

and links to other comms or advertisements about "off-shore" memes (like club_id, tlh, etc etc) shouldn't count as one of the memes.

I'd suggest somewhere between 5-7 memes, although I'd be content with some of the lower numbers suggested if the few memes that were posted of a greater variety.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Putting memes behind cuts just makes more work and means you need to open a new page for every meme, which feels pointless. The words "trigger warning" and indeed, "triggered" in general are overused and I highly doubt the majority of whiny babies who use that term actually have a right to.

If you have a real phobia of something, like blood, then yes you can say something involving blood like a picture of a scar would trigger that. In which case, you have a right to politely ask the meme-maker to put it under a cut.

If you just don't like pictures with blood or cuts, you are not being 'triggered' by seeing it. You are just bothered because you don't like it. In which case, get over it and scroll on past.

also on the subject of memes that are hosted elsewhere but linked here, maybe those could go through first on the queue, because usually they've already built up some steam before getting linked here, which means if they languish around in the queue for a while, the initial hype of the players already there may have died down before bakerstreet people get there.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
I think the three strike system should be like

if you post a character to three memes and fail to answer your tags all three times, you should get a warning.

i don't care about any of this queueueue shit or trigger shit.

i just want people
to answer
their fucking tags.

it isn't hard to keep a thread going. seriously. NOT HARD.

and if you drop threads that are going perfectly well, but continue replying to every new meme? it pisses me right the fuck off. especially if you have started and dropped a ton of meme threads proving it's not for lack of interest, but lack of attention span or effort. i have a mental list of people i just don't bother replying to anymore because i know they never answer tags, ever.

Have Some Raw Data

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
I personally don't think we need moderated posting still. A little more mod vigilance? Sure. I've been finding moderated posting more aggravating than it is actually helpful.

But how about some raw data?

Just how many memes do we get on average? Is it really a rampant problem?

I decided to take a look, so I went back through Bakerstreet's archives to take a glance at Bakerstreet meme numberes to see exactly what kind of posts we are getting, and if it's really a problem. I took data from February—June, since January was generally the great exodus from LJ period. I did, however, include two weeks of July if anyone wants to glance at it, but I didn't include it in my combined totals.

Average Memes a day February—June: 5.54 Memes/Day. Highest Amount Posted in a day being 13 (only one day of this February through June), lowest being 1.

Raw Stats Per Month:

*I considered "high amounts" of memes to be 10+ per day, and listed those in the high totals. "Low" numbers were considered 3 memes or less posted a day.

February: 178 total

Average: 6.13 Memes/Day
Highest: 10 (1 day)

Lowest:
1 (1 day)
3 (2 days)

March: 223 total

Average: 7.19 Memes/Day

Highest: 13 (1 day)
11 (2 days)
10 (5 Days)
Lowest: 2 (1 day)

April: 215

Average: 7.16 Memes/Day

Highest: 11 (1 day)
10 (1 day)
Lowest: 3 (1 day)

May - 227 total

Average: 7.3 meme/day

Highest: 13 (one day)
12 (1 day)
10 (4 ays)
Lowest: 3 (1 day)

June: 167 Memes
Average 5 Memes/Day

Highest: 10 (1 day)
Lowest: 2 (1 day)
3 (2 days)

July 2012: (First 2 weeks)

Total: 106
Average 7.57

1010 total memes/182 days (Feb—June)

So, anons, with this data in mind, is this number enough to validate moderated posting?

Like stats anon said, most of the time without moderated posting we'd be getting the same amount of memes as people are wanting, with maybe a few more spikes. And moderated posting is really just an inconvenience. Maybe make a rule that we can't have more than 10 memes a day, or something, if you're really worried about that. But I don't think moderated posting is a good idea.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
But it's more than just to keep numbers down, but also to keep variety in. No three smut memes in a row that are so similar that no one's going to tag the first anymore, and the like.

I don't mind the idea of moderated posting because I really don't give a flying fucking how many memes we get a day, just so long as something is going on. I do, however, like the notion of it simply because it's aggravating moaning anonymous bitches. I say keep doing it just to annoy them. The OOC anon whining is more entertaining than the memes and the responses they get these days.

i'm a-okay with moderated posting (to prevent memes dumps that happen sometimes), but the only problem i have with it, is that the memes that do get posted, well, um, they suck.

at least in my opinion they do. and, before, all we had to do was wait a couple of hours before a new better meme appeared and, hey, there was something to tag in. now we have to wait what seems like days for a good one.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-26 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)

Question for [personal profile] bakerstreet_mod here regarding post moderation: What do you do with the memes that are similar to one another? For instance, if you get three fluff memes that are pretty similar save for a tweak or two. Say you post one. What happens to the other two? Do they get deleted from the moderation line for being similar, or what?

I have a question:

Would anyone like the idea of encouraging people to go back and commenting on the tags that don't have any replies yet on past memes?

I can already see that this might be annoying, or could be, but I think it might be a nice surprise for some to get a tag, especially if you have seen that no one has replied to them on a few memes.

This is my preference, but I'd like to see a meme where everyone has a thread going. :)

I think moderated is fine, it doesn't bother me.

But this whole new level of moaning over something like mods actually doing their jobs? I'm going back to LJ. DW was fun in the early days when the transition was new, now it's just full of wank and bullshit and very flimsy opportunities to actually find good CR anymore. This place is just full of jerks.
