Age of Sail Meme

Welcome to the high seas and the Caribbean, in the Golden Age of Sail—and Piracy! Hoist anchors and set sail, because there’s adventure—and treasure—on the horizon.


Roles:
Piracy
A. Ship captain, of course, would you be found anywhere else? Command and the sea, those are your callings. Along with, of course, plunder.
B. Quartermaster, elected representative of the crew’s interests, and with power to veto the Captain’s decisions whenever the ship is not engaged in battle.
C. Crew. You’re in it for the plunder, and can’t be bothered with those pesky decisions. Unless, just maybe, you’ve got a mutiny in mind.
D. Cabin boy. Lowest in rank and newest on the ship, without any sailing experience of your own, but you’ll work your way up.

The Law
E. Pirate-hunter. Maybe you’re working freelance, taking bounties where you find them, or maybe you are an officer of a royal navy, but either way, you’re tasked with bringing those lawless pirates to justice. There’s money in it, and glory for you.
F. Governor. You are the law, in your little corner of the Caribbean. Troops from the homeland, money and resources are yours, but anarchy is just one mistake away, and the pirates are always threatening your ships and those of your traders.
G. Honest sailor. You follow orders and don’t ask too many questions about them. Or the cargo.

Land-Lubbers
H. Innkeeper or Brothel Madam. When the pirates and sailors come into town, they’re going to need food, drink, and companionship. You’re here to provide that.
I. Shipwright. Ships and repairs, it’s all your business. You’re willing to serve any customer, and you don’t ask too many questions.

J. Wildcard! Who would your character be in the Golden Age of Sail?

Mix and match, pirates and pirate hunters, raid a ship or follow a map to treasure. Go get that horizon!

Well, it sure was a nice evening to set out on a long voyage, in seeking of fat, merchant ships, ripe for the plucking. Pirate Captain Dean Winchester stood at the wheel of his fine ship Impala, looking out over his crew, shouting orders from where he stood.

Calling it a nice evening might be a bit of a stretch, but then he might be inclined to view it favorably if he weren't in shackles. Lieutenant Bennet du Paris, formerly of the French royal navy and currently of the Impala brig, can do nothing at first but blink blearily at the fading evening light. He was captured weeks ago and has spent most of that time below deck, chained to a mast with a ring of salt drawn around him. The sun is something he has to readjust to after that.

He draws himself up, ready to fight bound if he must, but his resolve dies when he sees the man just in front of him, the man he's been brought to. The pirate captain, the man who beat him in a sword fight when he'd been defending his ship. It was the first time, the only time since his training days, that someone had been able to beat him -- a pirate no less, and fairly even. He cannot bring himself to attack this man from behind, even if his life is on the line.

"Are you waiting for me to beg for my life? I won't," he says, trying to sound brave and defiant in what he imagines will be his last moments. "I told your men it was pointless to try and ransom me. You could have asked me personally and saved yourself the trouble."

Dean snorts at the bravado.

"I figured as much out myself when we first captured your sorry ass," he says, "I've been having debates with them over what we should do with you. Most seem pretty hellbent on you walkin' the plank. The others seem more inclined to hold onto you, just to see if we can't negotiate some kinda release to the Frenchies for you."

[Probably a freelance pirate hunter, albeit someone else's subordinate. Alternately, I could play her as pirate crew! In either case, she's got a rough backstory that, more than likely, her current captain was the one to save her from.]

[The crew isn't what it used to be—not since he was stripped of his command by the governor. But the governor is the one who was mistaken. And, Erwin thinks, suspiciously ready to discard some of his best officers.

If the law is corrupt, he'll go against the law. So he's flying under a lawless flag, but his aim is still to protect the people. Many of those who he sailed with have deserted him, largely because there's no money in it now, but that hasn't sapped him of his conviction. The ones who are left are the best of them.

Like Maiya, who stands at his side now.

The sun has set, and the stars are their guide. They're hunting by night. He knows his quarry, but their ships are lean, their crews hungry, and now larger than his own. Most would say that his is not a winning battle. He isn't interested in the opinion of the majority.

He studies the horizon by moonlight, and the signs are easy to read: the eastern sky has become a dark wall, and there's a rising breeze from the east. A storm.]
