I Need You.

"I Need You."
Maybe it's desperation. Maybe it's just the right time. Maybe you're in the heat of the moment, body-to-body, and you don't even think about it. Maybe you're scared, or angry, or maybe you're so overcome with love that you can't help but say it. Whatever the reason, you've found yourself with someone important: your partner, your family, your rival, your lover, the person of your dreams--and the words have fallen from your lips.
"I need you."
How do they react? How do you react if they've said it to you?
HOW TO PLAY
→ Post with your character! Put their name and canon in the header, and any preferences you might have!
→Tag other people! Either your character is saying they need the other person, or they just heard that character say the words!
→Have fun!! (don't be a dick)

Nate knows this better than most. Doesn't mean it he's always happy about that. He isn't. Especially when it comes to this team that no one thought would work. There was hope it would work, of course. Determination, even. But it had still been a huge gamble all the same. They were all different, with different things to offer, personality clashes, complicated histories. There had been a lot of factors to take into account.
The team working and staying together as long as it had... Nate still found it hard to believe.
But what he had even more trouble accepting was that it was ending. Sure, there was a new team he would be staying on to train with Cap but it wouldn't be the same. Clint was leaving (as Nate always assumed he would at some point), Bruce was gone (something he still was having a hard time dealing with), and now Tony was leaving, too.
He makes his way to Tony's room on the compound and stands in the doorway, silently leaning up against the frame as he watches the other man for a while. He always had been good at sneaking up on people. Although he wasn't trying right now. ]
You never do things in halves, do you?
[ It always has to be everything or nothing with Stark. ]

Ever since Afghanistan he'd made a conscious change and after both Nate and Fury's help after his arc reactor issues... the commitment to the Avengers was one of the least selfish of his exploits. Their little band had done good, over all.
Except now, it was a very different story.
Ultron was a mistake he would very likely make again, and again given the chance. He knew it didn't make him popular, and the damage it had done, and more specifically. The death it had caused was difficult for him to accept. He needed a break, and more than that he needed to focus on other pursuits.
Pepper was long gone. With Happy, she could be safe. It hurt, to see them together, to know he'd driven her away so easily - but they were still, somehow friends. Pepper didn't need a farm in the middle of nowhere, she needed someone she could depend on.
He needed time away.
It was why he'd come to this conclusion, and why he was quietly packing his things.
Nate was the last person he expected to see, and it's his voice that first alerts him to his presence. How he doesn't startle is beyond him, but he does turn - and slowly breaks into a smile.]
Not going to start now.

He pushes off of the doorframe and walks over to one of the desks in the room. He leans his bum on the edge, arms still crossed in front of him. ]
Even though it'd be in your best interest to do so. That's typical.

Those words leave him and he ducks his head, focusing his attention back to folding this particular shirt. ]
You really think I should stay?

[ Adding, ]
And not let your guilt dictate it.

He takes a breath, shakes his head and turns - throwing that shirt into his suitcase and zipping it up.]
I've got other things to focus on.

You have a team that needs you.

[A breath, and he gives in - turning to level him with a stare.]
To engineer our next target?

You fucked up. If you haven't noticed, we all have. But we didn't just give up afterward.
[ Except maybe Bruce but Bruce has more reason to run from things than Tony does. ]

Who do you think funds this little project now, Romanoff?

And you think removing yourself from the team is going to be better for everyone, including you? You wanted this team, Stark. You've wanted to be apart of it from the beginning and now you're just going to leave.

[He's not going to take no for an answer, and honestly - he's had enough of it, so he's wandering to the door, reaching out to grasp it and gesture past. Leave.]
I'm out.

Tony.
[ Something he rarely says to the other man. Usually they refer to each other by their last names and keep it like that. ]

I wasn't made for this.

[ The one that started all of this. It all really began with Tony. Cap had been lost in the ice for decades. Hank Pym had left and started his own company. SHIELD was doing their own work, trying to keep under the radar. It was only after Tony Stark had decided to go around as Iron Man that shit really started to hit the fan and things started happening. ]

[This is effectively blackmail, and honestly - he's not even sure why Nathaniel is going to this much effort over him.]
Things are different now.
[Without thinking twice, he twists his wrist, only enough that hopefully he lets go.]
no subject
That's not a reason.

Why are you so desperate to keep me here?
no subject
You wouldn't believe me even if I told you.
no subject
You know, I'm about as sick of secrets as you are.
[Another sigh, and he ducks his head again - shaking it idly.]
I need time out.
