Whatever the reason, you've found yourself with someone important: your partner, your family, your rival, your lover, the person of your dreams--and the words have fallen from your lips.

[A breath, and he gives in - turning to level him with a stare.]

To engineer our next target?

[tantsor]

[ Nate meets that stare with a look of his own, still leaning against the edge of the desk. ]

You fucked up. If you haven't noticed, we all have. But we didn't just give up afterward.

[ Except maybe Bruce but Bruce has more reason to run from things than Tony does. ]

[It's the first time someone has actually openly blamed him for it since they got back, and the moment the words drop from Nate's mouth he looks down at the carpet, shaking his head.]

Who do you think funds this little project now, Romanoff?

[tantsor]

[ Tony's already blaming himself for it. If he really wants to do that, they might as well get it out in the open. Nate knows Tony had had good intentions. He normally does. But removing himself from the team isn't going to make this better. ]

And you think removing yourself from the team is going to be better for everyone, including you? You wanted this team, Stark. You've wanted to be apart of it from the beginning and now you're just going to leave.

[gbpp]

Aliens, Romanoff. Aliens.

[He's not going to take no for an answer, and honestly - he's had enough of it, so he's wandering to the door, reaching out to grasp it and gesture past. Leave.]

I'm out.

[tantsor]

[ Nate ends up doing what he did when he first met Tony and was made to "fight" Happy in the gym: he acts without thinking. Reaching to to grab Tony's wrist. The grip isn't tight or threatening. He doesn't even try to pull the other man back into the room. He just... keeps his hold. ]

Tony.

[ Something he rarely says to the other man. Usually they refer to each other by their last names and keep it like that. ]

[gbpp]

[That's more than enough to make him stop, and look rather shocked about it too. His gaze shifts instantly to the place where Nate's got him by the wrist - and then back up, eyebrows furrowing into a frown.]

I wasn't made for this.

[tantsor]

That didn't stop you from making that suit. The one that got you out of that cave.

[ The one that started all of this. It all really began with Tony. Cap had been lost in the ice for decades. Hank Pym had left and started his own company. SHIELD was doing their own work, trying to keep under the radar. It was only after Tony Stark had decided to go around as Iron Man that shit really started to hit the fan and things started happening. ]

[gbpp]

Don't--

[This is effectively blackmail, and honestly - he's not even sure why Nathaniel is going to this much effort over him.]

Things are different now.

[Without thinking twice, he twists his wrist, only enough that hopefully he lets go.]

[tantsor]

[ Nate tightens his grip. ]

That's not a reason.

[gbpp]

[The grip is enough to make him frown - and level Nate with a stare.]

Why are you so desperate to keep me here?

[tantsor]

[ He hesitates but then let's go. ]

You wouldn't believe me even if I told you.

[gbpp]

[It doesn't hurt, but there's something about the contact that makes him reach up once he's free, rubbing idly at his wrist.]

You know, I'm about as sick of secrets as you are.

[Another sigh, and he ducks his head again - shaking it idly.]
