This meme is pretty simple and straightforward: shippy situations for all your cold-weather needs. From the cute to the hot to the sweet to the cool, it's all here for you. Don't be shy! He smiles and offers a nod.

"Not rewriting any of it...."

Because while they have twenty-four years ahead of them, it's hard to not think of the end. He reaches across and clinks his glass against hers. He takes a sip, stealing his nerves.

"River. I can't promise I'll be good at this. But, life on the 'slow path' doesn't mean we can't travel. We'll just have to be very careful."

River's smile softens at his words, nodding her head in agreement. Of all the things they've done, all the adventures they've had, the good and the bad - she wouldn't rewrite a single line of it.

Bringing the glass to her lips, she takes a sip to seal their cheers, but her eyes lift back to him when he speaks again. It's not often the Doctor allows himself to speak more seriously about their relationship - it's why she's lived so long believing he didn't truly love her - so when he does, she listens closely.

"You mean, we can travel in the TARDIS?" she asks slowly, curiously. Her eyebrows begin to lift, because that widens the possibilities even more.

He takes another sip before meeting her eyes and offering a smile.

"Well, I wouldn't be me if I didn't."

There's a moment, before River's lips twist into grin, an almost scolding look in her eyes that's easily outshined by the happiness there. "There's that smug little smile," she murmurs knowingly. He always had a way out, always something up his sleeve. An ending didn't have to be short - if he hates goodbyes, they can at least make theirs last as long as possible.

"Well, to be fair,I did offer it just before I said, 'Twenty-Four Years,' but I can't hardly be faulted if you weren't paying attention."

And now the smile turns into a playful grin. After all, she did ask for that. And maybe. Just maybe. They can do this. And he will survive saying 'goodbye' for twenty-four years. It's not goodbyes that are bad anyway. It's Endings. And he'll run from this one as long as the universe will let him.

"The wind was in my eyes," she quips in return, but her smile is soft and her remark good-natured. For all her worry and sadness, the pages of her diary that were running short, it breathes a new life into her to know they have more time left that she first feared. Here they are, at the last page, with stories that will go on unpublished.

"Though, 'it's never just the wind.'"

But there's a small twinkle to his eyes as he says it. He gestures to her seat.

"Look under your chair, Professor Song."

If she does, she'll find a little black book. If she opens it, she'll see the inside has a silken red lining. And she might note that it seems to only have a few pages. Not nearly enough to cover twenty-four years. Which... well, he has his reasons for that.

At his instruction, she pulls a little face of bemusement, before she does as asked, leaning down to see a book sat neatly underneath. She sits upright once more, opening the book to find the pages are blank, what few of them there were.

"What's this?" she asks uncertainly, shaking her head slightly as she waits for him to answer, a little note of curiosity in her voice. It reminds her of when he gave her her diary, but now they'll be travelling in the same direction, side by side.

"An appendix."

He offers a small shrug and sips his wine before saying more.

"Every good book has one."

River smirks slowly at that, closely the book and laying her hand fondly against the cover. They might not need to keep track of all the things they do now, but sometimes old habits die hard.

Glancing across to him again, she notes him taking a drink. "Now, that's new," she remarked. "The younger you would've spit it back in the glass by now."

"Well. The face of a twelve-year-old meant the taste buds of the same."

Wait until she sees how he drinks his coffee, though.

"And it's not new. That was the only body that didn't drink."

And he didn't give it to her for old habits. The Appendix will be his to keep. The only way to make sure the ending doesn't happen.

"Did plenty of other things, though," River jokes lightly. After all, she and that previous body of his had got rather.. familiar on occasion. She gives him a naughty little grin as she goes back to her own glass, because no doubt his memory is still working just fine.

He clears his throat and shifts uncomfortably. But he's going to try to turn it into a joke.

"Well I hope you enjoyed it. This body isn't the hugging sort."

And the joke falls completely flat. Right. Time to sip more of the wine.

"Whoever said anything about hugging?" River replies, raising her eyebrows at him knowingly. He might have changed since regeneration, but River Song is one and the same, in case he hadn't been reminded by her barrage of kissing and innuendoes since they reunited out in the snow.

He... has no idea how to reply to that. Luckily, he's saved by the waiter bringing their meals. He waits until the plates are settled and the waiter leaves.

"So what did you settle on?"

Because no, he can't remember. He had other things he was thinking about at the time.

He might've been saved by the waiter, but River knows exactly how her words landed, even if he doesn't flail and fluster like his younger self once had. She smirks discreetly to herself, eyes down upon her plate as it's set in front of her.

"I went for the cod," she tells him, reaching for her cutlery. He had recommended it after all. She takes a bite of her food and makes a noise of near immoral pleasure. "Mm. That is good! I didn't realise how hungry I was. Mind you, our dinner was rather rudely interrupted." She can refer to the Shoal of the Winter Harmony rather flippantly now they're all dead.

"Well, our dinners rarely go according to plan."

Everything is out of order. He cuts into his meat and takes a bite. It's food. Meant for energy and sustenance. He no longer understands people's obsessions with... being obsessed.

"Oh, I remember!" River replies, laughing and covering her mouth as she does. "Do you remember when we went to the State Ball in 2085? We barely got through the drinks, never mind the dinner!" She chuckles fondly at the memory, setting her chin on her hand as she recalls how it all kicked off, and resulted in the Queen being turned into a goldfish.

He can't help but grin at that.

"Don't think Rory forgave me for leaving him with Amy, but it was his turn."

"Ooh, I hope my mother didn't hear you say that," River says with a playful wince, knowing how kindly her Amy would take that because, well, she'd take it just the same. The brief thought of her parents softens River for a moment, and she pulls back from the jokes to concentrate on her food for a moment. She'd only recently been through Manhattan. It'd been harder on her than she'd let on. She'd done her crying when she was out of sight of the Doctor.

He's about to reply with just how awkward it had been when he notes her change in demeanour. He swallows. It had been billions of years for him...

"Sorry. Manhattan... wasn't that long ago for you, then."

"No, it wasn't," she says quietly to her plate. She might've lied, shrugged it off, but Flemming had read her diary to all those present, something that makes her blood boil even now. She tries to take the subject off herself.

"But, it's been a long time for you, I gather? How many years?"

He looks down at his plate as well. To give her a semblance of privacy. But when she tries to change the subject, he says her name soft, with just a hint of 'don't' behind it. "River..."

Don't push this away. Don't make it about him and certainly don't ask the 'how long' question. He's not ready to answer that and he doubts she's ready to hear the answer.

"I'm sorry I made you run. That I got caught up in myself..."

That he didn't let River grieve or share her grief. He always made her feel like she had to hide so much.

Her lips worry into a thin line as she keeps her eyes upon her plate, closing her eyes a moment as she tries to will back the threat of tears from this tender topic. It's all too recent for her, and tonight, her emotions are already raw.

She swallows down the burn of upset in her throat, fluttering her eyelids and taking a deep breath to smooth things over. Never let him see the damage.

"I told you, it doesn't matter," she says softly, not quite looking at him until she's sure she has control on her tears.

He reaches across the table to try to gather one of her hands in his. Even though he knows that River got more than he did. She got to see them again when she dropped off her book for Amy to get published....

"Did you give her the book yet?"

Because, well. Maybe he can make that be their first trip. Of course, he knows that happens. And it had already happened for him, but maybe it hasn't happened for her yet.
