It hasn't always worked—mistakes have been made and collateral damage has occurred—but there's "damage" and then there's "the destruction of society as they know it, at least as far as anyone can tell because long-range communication is now a thing of the past."

Altaïr wonders, briefly, if this is what it was like for the First Civilization after the original solar flare. And he wonders now how much difference there is left between Assassins and Templars, and how much that difference even matters.]

[Katniss Everdeen, the Girl on Fire, is not the ideal post-apocalypse buddy.

Then again, Johanna does have to concede: she could do worse. There isn't a whole lot of game left to hunt in this area--too close to the place the Capitol dropped their bomb, in this region--but what's there can be hunted down, and as long as it proves safe, they can have themselves a little feast. Licking grease off of their fingers, sitting around their tiny fire. Someday maybe they'll be eating six-eyed squirrel instead of the usual two-eyes, but not yet.

It's mostly during these little picnics when Johanna thinks to be grateful that, of the handful of people that she knows who managed to survive the Capitol's big ol' surprise, Brainless was the one who decided to stick with her.

Or maybe she's sticking with Katniss. Honestly? Who knows anymore. Who cares. Johanna doesn't have a destination in mind. She's all about survival, about living in the present, and she isn't stupid enough to hope for a whole lot of miracles, for secret survivors hiding somewhere deep underground. They'd been out in the woods when it had happened, miles and miles away from the center of District 13. Routine training exercises, running around between the trees. Then the air had caught on fire around them, and that was it. Too far to run underground. Then again, maybe it wouldn't have mattered. District 13 was buried deep, but Snow had turned out to be pretty clever.

Not clever enough. Johanna smirks, grimly, as she hauls herself up over the next rock.]

You know what the best part of this is?

[She's a little behind Katniss, who is more dogged in her pace. Surprise, surprise. Probably still holding out hope for getting back and finding her little family all warm and safe. When she finds out they're dead--because they are dead, probably; because everyone is dead, and Johanna can think that so easily because she's used to everyone being dead--well. Johanna plans to be clear of Katniss when that sad day dawns. Brainless is one thing. Totally useless is another.

The hill that they're climbing has a tumble of rocks spilled down its side, as if someone dropped a very big bag of very big marbles down from the peak, let them roll down the side and stick in the dirt and dead grass. The sky today is a hazy orange, and so is the air around them. Like living in an old photograph. It's better than the thick black rain that had come in the days after the explosion, and better than the firestorms that had immediately followed. Better than the ponds and pools of poisoned water, banks strewn with animal corpses. Better than everyone in your little training group falling down dead, one by one, skin sloughing off, breath rattling in their throats.

Johanna has a pretty bad burn on her arm. She doesn't talk about it. Sometimes her breath comes shorter than she'd like. Whatever.

She grabs hold of another rock and hoists herself over. One step closer to the crest of that hill. One step closer to--District 13, probably. Or whatever's left.]

The best part is, all this shit happened to the Capitol too.

[Who knew, that bombing all of Panem would have such far-reaching consequences? Think before you act, Johanna's aunt used to caution everyone. She died. But at least she didn't die rotting from some gas from the inside out.]

I bet Snow makes a great corpse.

[Well in his canon Tokyo blew up, the US and Russia nuked the hlel otu of each other, and then Tokyo blew up again, followed by a chunk taken out of the moon, and Tokyo yet again. Poor Tokyo. 'course that was 18-20 years ago in Tetsuo's time and the city's sort of rebuilt again, but he lives out in the Old City ruins, so it's still sort of post-apocalyptic. M/F for shippy things!]

He could see how she thought she was safe for the moment, but he knew where the hoard of zombies were, lumbering towards them, and he grabbed her arm with the hand not holding an automatic weapon as he kept moving.

[ she had tried. she had tried and tried for so long to stubbornly hold onto what was left of herself, to rationalise the things around them. for every dark stain they encountered, she told herself that there was always light, too, that people were good. and they are. the good people are still out there, still good — it's just that it doesn't matter, in the end. and so Elizabeth kills, and she cuts her hair, and she can pretend that it's for convenience (because long hair is no good, as the people they come across are so fond of telling her, long hair that will become matted and caught and grabbed) when it's really about change. about that silly little girl dying with the first person she had killed. the world out here is about survival, and Elizabeth intends to survive.

because she can't rely on Booker forever — not that she has any intention of losing him. no, it's rather that if she wants to ensure she isn't going to lose him to anything, she needs to be capable of taking care of herself. if he's overwhelmed trying to protect her, or injured and unable to fight, or if he needs to do something by himself but he's too worried to leave her alone... there are a lot of things that could go wrong if she can't be counted on as a partner instead of a burden.

which is why in the morning, in the ruins of whatever building they've taken their shelter in this time, she waits until they've gotten through whatever scraps of uncontaminated (or otherwise, contaminated with little enough radiation to be safe) food they managed to scrape together and then she speaks up. ]

Booker? [ her voice is unsure, but there's a familiar set to her jaw, resolute and unyielding. ] I want you to teach me how to use a gun. Properly, I mean, not just... pull the trigger when someone's so close I can't miss.

[ holding onto a pistol and a knife "just in case" isn't enough anymore. ]
