What the heck kind of guidebook IS this? What other kind of means are we supposed to find? Spiritual?

_{[One corner of the box finally rips, spilling Maurice onto the floor.]}

[The cervitaur sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose.]

I...I honestly have no idea. I'm no closer to finding the cure than I was two weeks ago.

There's gotta be somebody in this town that knows magic...can I try your phone? Maybe Meranda just wasn't home last time.

[deernoise]

Sure...who's Meranda?

[toothaches]

My roomie. We live in Texas...and if I can't get ahold of her, I'm gonna try my mom. She's got a big rig I know can make the drive.

_{[The Sphinx Express stands up to allow Dipper back on. He doesn't know where the phone is and he doubts he can dial or even hold a phone with his dumb paws.]}

[deernoise]

[Dipper nods and tosses the blacklight onto his bed, gathering up the journal to put back in his vest before scaling back up onto Maurice's back.]

Signals tend to get a bit...weird in town here, but I think you should be able to make a few calls alright.

[toothaches]

_{[He grimaces as they make their way downstairs. He can only imagine the kind of trouble they could get into if they tried to go to another town to use a phone.]}

Now I wish I'd tried hitchhiking after all. I could at least fight off the guy if they turned out to be a weirdo. Now I'm the weirdo.

[deernoise]

No weirder than the rest of us are, I can promise you that.

[The boy responded dryly as he gripped Maurice's shoulders to keep himself from sliding off while the sphynxpire trundled down the stairs.]

What....what do you think would happen if I bit somebody? Would they turn into a vampire or a Whatever?

_{[Maurice momentarily forgets Dipper is on his back and rares up so that he can dramatically drag his paws down hi face.]}

I wish this was all just a bad Everclear Desert Walk!

[deernoise]

Woah woah, hey!

[Dipper exclaims, throwing his arms around Maurice's neck to keep from sliding off of his back.]

I dunno, but try not to bite anybody for now if you can, okay man?

[toothaches]

_{[Maurice drops back down and quickly pads the rest of the way down the stairs in search of a phone. There had to be one on the counter! He races over to it.]}

I'm going to try! This is the worst! Just...I don't know anything about what I am! What if they eat deer? Do you have garlic? Carry some garlic with you!

[deernoise]

[And so there is! It's pretty old- definitely not a cell phone or anything- but it should work.]

Don't worry about it, you- you're probably fine! ...trust me, you're not the only one who's a vampire around here...

[toothaches]

_{[He worries at it with his paws. They aren't as nimble as his dog paws. When he shape shifts he's able to fudge some things.]}

Crap...crap...HAH.

<sub>[He knocks the receiver off so that it lays earpeice up on the counter and drones out a tinny dial tone. Then he carefully dials his number with an extended claw. It rings. And rings. And rings. OKAY. Okay, Maurice, don't panic! He shoots the cervitaur a strained smile before dialing another number. And another number. And another. Suddenly in a fit of rage he swipes the phone, base and all, off the desk.]

[And then he pushes everything else off the desk because he's a fucking cat.]</sub>

THIS ISN'T HAPPENING!

[deernoise]

[Okay that. Happened. Maurice calm down-]

What isn't!? What happened?

[Dipper scrabbles off of Maurice's back to quickly bend over and retrieve the phone, hoping that the disturbance wouldn't be enough to attract Stan's attention.]

You couldn't get anybody?

[toothaches]

NO! I called every phone number I know! I even called my old landord!

_{[He shoves himself away from the desk and plods back over to Dipper.]}

We gotta get outta town!

[deernoise]

We what?

[Dipper exclaims, taking a small step back.]

No- no, we can't! We have to stay and try to...try to figure out a way to fix this! We can't run away from it!

[toothaches]

Dipper. Dipper, listen to me.

_{[He puts his huge paws on the kid's shoulders again.]}

Running away from your problems is a fantastic plan.

[deernoise]

Not- not when you're the one who caused them!

[Dipper flinches away from Maurice's touch, his ears flat against his head.]

None...none of this would even be happening if I didn't find the stream in the first place! Now everyone's a monster and it's been almost a month and I haven't been able to fix anything! I can't just- just leave everyone like this, don't you get it?! My sister is a FISH!

[toothaches]

_{[He pulls his paws away and sits on his haunches while Dipper has a freakout of his own.]}

Dude! Dude, I'm sure it's not your fault! You didn't make anybody go into the river.

[deernoise]

I know. ...I know, but...I still found it first. That's the only reason anyone else ever came in contact with it.

[He sighs, dragging his hands down his face.]

What good would running do, anyway? We're not out of place here, at least. I can't go anywhere looking like I do.

[toothaches]

<sub>[Maurice frowns down at his front paws and flops his tail from side to side as he thinks harder than he's had to think in a long time. Sphinxes are supposed to be good at riddles, so at least smoke doesn't start trailing out of his ears. He glances back over at the dangling sun catcher and feels the urge to go bat at it travel from the base of his tail to the nape of his neck. It was so shiny and--NO! He's a man, dammit! Not a cat thing!]

[His face brightens.]</sub>

The book said no physical means...what if...we can undo this ourselves? With the power of our MINDS? Mental means!

[deernoise]

Mental means...

[Dipper echoes, tapping a hoof against the wood floor.]

...I don't think you mean that we can just think the curse away, right? There has to be something more to it than that.

[toothaches]

Think about it!

_{[He spreads his wings.]}

I've been a monster for a while....A different monster. Not a weird cat thing. But I always make sure to think like a human so I remember who I am and don't go around treating people like Capri Suns! I'm not like those vampires in your book, right?

[deernoise]

You aren't, no...so we just have to think more...human?

[Now that he mentions it, far too many townsfolk have really succumb to their urges as monsters. Barely any of them can eat anything else but meat anymore, save for the very few who turned up omnivores like Dipper.]

[toothaches]

_{[The sphinx beams a huge jagged grin and nods frantically.]}

Yeah! Yeah, that's gotta be it! You wait here! I'm gonna go get my pants!

_{[He gallops back upstairs, his tail finally lashing with happiness for once. However, when he returns it's in a frantic cannonball of feathers and fur with his pants tangled wound his neck.]}

DIPPER, WE GOT A PROBLEM!

<sub>[Maurice wastes no time in hauling the kid into his back whether he wants up there or not and clambers back upstairs and up to the nearest window--which he presses the poor cervitaur's face against.]

[Outside, at the very edge of the property visible from the Shack is a big rusty truck with a cooler on the back and standing outside it are two men in flannel with numerous gadgets strapped to their belts. One is sporting binoculars while the other totes a high-end rifle. There is a teddy bear duct taped to it.]</sub>

Tell me I'm bein' paranoid and those dudes totally aren't monster hunters.
