The (Platonic) Love of my Life Meme

They're your partner, your soulmate, your other half... but you don't think of them *that* way. This is a meme for playing out intimate platonic relationships.

Post with your character, canon, preferences, etc. Tag around. Despite the wording of the meme, Golden Trios (or more) are fine too. Here's some prompts to get you started:



1. Love at First Sight: Your eyes met, and you knew with the tugging at your heart that this person would be your best friend for the rest of your life.

2. Better as Friends: You have mistaken your platonic bond for a romantic one, and are trying to make it work as lovers (and failing). The love and trust is there, but there's no attraction, no spark. When are you going to realize the truth?

3. Wedding Bells: The two of you want all the legal benefits of marriage -- or maybe you're being pressured to marry someone, so you pick your best friend. Just don't let anyone know you don't plan on consummating.

4. Confession: You've been friends for a while, and it's time to let them know the truth -- that your feelings for them go beyond friendship and into platonic partnership. Here's hoping they understand.

5. Under One Roof: You live together. Sharing a bed, arguing over furniture, going for groceries... can your relationship withstand being around each other nearly 24/7?

6. New Life: The two of you are going to raise a child together. Maybe you're adopting, or using artificial insemination. Maybe one of you conceived a child with someone else and the other one will serve as another parent figure for the child.

7. Not my Lover: The two of you are constantly mistaken for lovers -- how could you be so affectionate and intimate with each other without something romantic or sexual going on, after all? You might even get in trouble for this perceived relationship.

8. Three's a Crowd: One or more of you also has a romantic partner in addition to your platonic partner, and they're getting jealous of all the time you spend with your platonic partner. They may even accuse you of cheating, and you may have to choose between the two relationships.

9. Friends Never Say Goodbye: It's been a good run, but it's time for you to part ways. Perhaps you're simply breaking up, or someone has to go far away. Whatever the cause, your memories of this person and what you had together will never fade.

10. I Love You (Intensely and Platonically): Wildcard. Combine prompts, or make up your own scenarios.

Letting the silence stretch for a moment, Aramis finally says, "you know that I am your friend through thick and thin .... "

Athos makes a face at that, giving Aramis a look from above the rim of glass. He knows what type of discussion usually follows after such an introduction, and he is not looking forward to hearing it again. He pours himself another glass, his hands too steady still.

"Yes."

"And," Aramis says, carefully, "I wonder when it will come time for you to ... well, let go. And move on."

The initial urge is to tell Aramis to mind his own business, either with sharp words or an eloquent glare. But the man is his friend and Athos knows he means well in his own, annoying way. "When I am ready," he answers, tonelessly, and downs another glass of wine.

"You are not getting any younger," Aramis feels compelled to remind him. "And you have much to give a woman."

Thanks for that, Aramis.

Athos snorts in reply, almost silently. "What, bitterness and too-long days spent at the Garrison?" he answers, dryly. He has so little left to give, in truth, when he comes to matters of the heart.

It's Aramis's pleasure, Athos. And that is not true, at all; the look Aramis gives Athos is indication of that. "The bitterness can be lessened, surely. If you find the right woman."

Athos shakes his head, slowly. He doesn't want another woman. He can love only one and she is as deadly to him as a scorpion. Falling in love again would be showing a vulnerability he cannot spare, not after having been betrayed so thoroughly.

"Athos - "

Aramis has often felt like he could never love again and always, he has.

"Do you think you shall spend the rest of your life unhappy?"

But Aramis and Athos have such different personalities.

"Quite possibly," Athos answers, rising his eyebrows at his glass of wine. He is beginning to feel warm and a little softer already, though bitterness is still spreading in his chest. "But not too unhappy, perhaps."

"Not too, but just right?" Aramis's expression is gentle and caring. "Athos - "

[ruggedswordsman]

"Enough, Aramis," Athos interrupts, calmly. He sounds remarkably sober, still. "Enough." He looks back into Aramis's gentle eyes and shakes his head. "I have already found more peace than I ever thought I would, at the Garrison."

"I will only say this," Aramis replies, knowing not to push. "You are one of the best men I know. So you deserve the best."

[ruggedswordsman]

"I have the best friends, at least," Athos answers. It is possible that he is a little drunk, now.

[averygoodshot]

"You do. But ... that is not what God wanted to for men, to only have the best of friends."

There, Aramis has said his piece.

He raises his glass to Athos and drinks, too.

Athos will keep quiet on the matter of God, as he knows Aramis and he would drastically disagree and he does not mean to argue with his friend.

More wine seems an excellent idea and he promptly pours what is left of the bottle into his glass, his eyebrows furrowing. It used to take less wine, to make him drunk enough to sleep.

For his part, Aramis only has two glasses. He doesn't like his senses dulled. Even on Porthos's birthday.

"What shall we talk of now, Athos?"

[ruggedswordsman]

"Your reckless tendency to put yourself in grave danger during our missions?" Athos answers seriously, arching an eyebrow at Aramis. Then he grins, a tiny little curl of his mismatched lips, to show that he is merely teasing.

[averygoodshot]

"Very funny," Aramis replies, though he's glad to see Athos smile. "One man's recklessness is another man's strategy."

[ruggedswordsman]

That is going to earn Aramis a rude snort, a little louder than Athos would usually let himself be, now that he is beginning to feel a little drunk. "Strategy," he repeats, dryly.

"I have succeeded where you thought I would fail," Aramis reminds him. "You cannot deny that."

[ruggedswordsman]

"Yes, and almost got killed for your pains," Athos points out, more seriously this time. His eyebrows furrow a little. "Porthos would cry at your funeral."

[averygoodshot]

Feigning hurt, Aramis puts a hand to his chest. "And you would not weep? Athos."

[ruggedswordsman]

"I would," Athos states, meeting Aramis's eyes shamelessly, eyebrows raised. "And then Porthos and I would get roaring drunk."

"Well, at least I would be missed," Aramis replies dryly. "Alas, I am not dead yet."
