The (Platonic) Love of my Life Meme

They're your partner, your soulmate, your other half... but you don't think of them *that* way. This is a meme for playing out intimate platonic relationships.

Post with your character, canon, preferences, etc. Tag around. Despite the wording of the meme, Golden Trios (or more) are fine too. Here's some prompts to get you started:



1. Love at First Sight: Your eyes met, and you knew with the tugging at your heart that this person would be your best friend for the rest of your life.

2. Better as Friends: You have mistaken your platonic bond for a romantic one, and are trying to make it work as lovers (and failing). The love and trust is there, but there's no attraction, no spark. When are you going to realize the truth?

3. Wedding Bells: The two of you want all the legal benefits of marriage -- or maybe you're being pressured to marry someone, so you pick your best friend. Just don't let anyone know you don't plan on consummating.

4. Confession: You've been friends for a while, and it's time to let them know the truth -- that your feelings for them go beyond friendship and into platonic partnership. Here's hoping they understand.

5. Under One Roof: You live together. Sharing a bed, arguing over furniture, going for groceries... can your relationship withstand being around each other nearly 24/7?

6. New Life: The two of you are going to raise a child together. Maybe you're adopting, or using artificial insemination. Maybe one of you conceived a child with someone else and the other one will serve as another parent figure for the child.

7. Not my Lover: The two of you are constantly mistaken for lovers -- how could you be so affectionate and intimate with each other without something romantic or sexual going on, after all? You might even get in trouble for this perceived relationship.

8. Three's a Crowd: One or more of you also has a romantic partner in addition to your platonic partner, and they're getting jealous of all the time you spend with your platonic partner. They may even accuse you of cheating, and you may have to choose between the two relationships.

9. Friends Never Say Goodbye: It's been a good run, but it's time for you to part ways. Perhaps you're simply breaking up, or someone has to go far away. Whatever the cause, your memories of this person and what you had together will never fade.

10. I Love You (Intensely and Platonically): Wildcard. Combine prompts, or make up your own scenarios.

"Of course you would be missed," Athos answers immediately, quietly intense. His eyebrows furrow, displeased with Aramis's lightness on the subject.

"Athos," Aramis starts, brows drawing together. If they couldn't laugh about their eventual fate, what could they laugh at? "I did not mean to alarm you," he says, reaching forward to touch Athos's arm. "My apologies."

"I am not alarmed," Athos dismisses, though his eyebrows stay furrowed. "I simply do not cherish the idea of either you or Porthos dying on my watch."

"We will endeavor to make sure we don't. Trust me on that," Aramis tells him, his smile small and crooked. "I have no wish to rush to God's pearly gates."

Athos mulls that over for a few seconds and then grins, small but playful.

"The pearly gates, Aramis? With all you raucous drinking and corrupting of innocent damsels, I think you're good for a few years of Purgatory first, at least," he taunts, though his eyes are fond.

"Athos - " Aramis puts his hand to his chest with a smile. "Would you punish me so? I have hardly corrupted those who didn't wish to be corrupted." And the drinking ... well, he knows better than to bring that up.

"I suppose not," Athos agrees with a silent snort, watching Aramis with open fondness as he opens the second bottle and pours himself more wine. He holds the bottle up, quietly offering more to Aramis.

One glass for him, thank you. Then Aramis leans back in his seat. "Do you think you will replace Treville when he moves on?"

Athos almost drops his glass. "God, I hope not," he says, with feeling. Not because he doesn't like Treville, or thinks his duty to be tedious, but he thinks he will most likely be dead, when the time would come for him to retire.

And he was angry that Aramis for bringing up death? Athos. "Does that seem so strange?" he asks, "to think of you being the leader?"

"I suppose not," Athos answers, wryly. "I am already the one who makes sure none of you get killed being reckless idiots."

"So, not so strange," Aramis says with a laugh. "You will be a fine Captain some day."

Athos makes a slight face, his lips curving down. His plans for the future are fairly limited, after all. Getting drunk and passing out on his bed (preferably) are his whole horizon, at the moment. So he empties his glass and pours himself another one.

For his part, Aramis says nothing, sipping his wine as he leans back into his seat. If Athos wants more, though, he will have to order it himself.

Athos will, ordering another bottle as soon as he finished with this one. He arches an eyebrow at Aramis, as if daring him to protest. He drinks slowly, methodically, without apparent enjoyment.

Then why does he do it? That is what Aramis wonders.

He won't ask, though, because he values his head on its shoulders. He does ask, though, "would you like bread? Cheese, perhaps."

To dull the sharpness of his own mind.

"I am not hungry," Athos answers, and his speech is slightly less crisp and composed than the usual. He waves a hand at Aramis is general permission for him to eat, if he wishes.

If the food is there, Athos might eat it just even absently. So, Aramis waves down the girl and asks for bread and cheese and runs a hand through his hair. "The nights have been getting more mild, haven't they?"

Athos will indeed eat everything Aramis slyly pushes towards him on the table, almost not realizing that he is doing so. He makes a small noise that could be a snort at the question, and doesn't answer.

Oh, Aramis is content to make conversation all by himself if need be: the weather, politics amongst the merchants on the street, even some gossip of what the ladies of the street have been up to. He keeps his ear to the ground.

And Athos is content to half listen, humming once in a while and giving Aramis flat looks to show his disapproval of some of the topics he broaches. A while later he's leaning on his elbow heavily, slouched in a way he never would sober, finishing his fourth bottle.

That will be all. Aramis gives the hostess a shake of the head: No more. And when the bottle has been wrung dry, he waits until Athos has finished what's in his goblet and then he can stand, hat back on his head. "Time to go home."

Athos is too drunk to protest this time, giving a bleary nod and rising unsteadily, heavily leaning against the wall behind him. His head aches but his mind is blissfully blank and hazy, all his painful thoughts dimmed to a distant memory.

"Here we are," Aramis notes, tone still light, as he pulls Athos's arm around his shoulders. A few coins get thrown onto the table and then they are making their way home, toward the Garrison, one step at a time.

Athos can be belligerent when he is drunk but he seems pliant at the moment, grasping Aramis's shoulder mindlessly to steady himself and following him, his eyes vague and his steps unsure.
