[It's a struggle to make it work. They knew it would be, after months of shared horror and a lifetime of regrets apiece even before they met. That's a lot of baggage. Perhaps lesser beings would be smothered under the weight of so much baggage.

Not Loki. Not Balthazar. Call it strength of will or sheer stubborn spite, once they've made up their minds to try again--together this time--gods help anyone who says otherwise. That bloody-mindedness makes what they do possible, but it doesn't make it easy.

There's touch, and there's food and drink, sunlight and slow walks around quiet neighborhoods. Books and trinkets bought and stolen to amuse one another. Breathless kisses, whispers, and sex that ranges from timid to desperate in the span of a few minutes. 'Love' comes up mostly in casual conversation, a reality to heavy to dwell on, but too important to ignore.

And so it goes, and they move from Chicago to Manhattan to Boston, doing nothing productive other than trying to heal themselves. It's not bad, except...

Except the nightmares aren't really fading. Not for Balthazar, at least, and given Loki's restless insomnia and sudden cries at night, he's convinced he's not the only one. Immortal beings, evidently, are subject to post traumatic stress, in much the same way as humans. But they don't go to counselors and they don't take medication to help.

That leaves them to heal the hard way, and Balthazar knows from bitter experience that a wound often has to bleed to heal. There's a chasm between them, and he thinks he has some idea how to bridge it, if not seal it up.]

I have a proposal. [It's voiced one day in the quiet of early morning at a home they've rented on the coast of Maine. The air smells of bitter cold and sweet sea-spray, wafting through a window propped ajar.

And the angel sits across the breakfast table from Loki, taking his hands, and makes a quiet plea. It's for himself he asks for this, though he thinks the idea will suit Loki well enough. But Balthazar needs to be reminded he's not merely a tool honed in their captors' unfeeling hands. Needs to be reassured that he can weaken and crumble and not be abandoned.

Knowing Loki as he does, he imagines he could use the reminder that he's more powerful than he gives himself credit for, for good and for ill.

And so he writes out a series of detailed sigils on a sheet of paper. Arranged properly in a circle, they'll dampen his Grace enough to keep him too weak to fly, and slow his healing factor enough to allow him to feel pain in earnest. From there...well. They can discuss the possibilities, and if it feels like the negotiations preceding a BDSM scene, at least that's something Balthazar has some experience with.]

For people who didn’t know him, who only new Superman from the TV and newspapers it was just a weird concept to think about. Especially when they considered what he could end up doing if he only took it too far.
