"Can You Handle Your Emotions?"

Emotions are... eh. We all have them, whether we want to or not. Some people have control over their emotions, and some people let their emotions control them. Where does your character fall on this spectrum? More importantly, what's their relationship with their emotions like? Do they bury everything deep, deep down inside, or are they the first one to cry over a sappy movie? Do they even know how they feel about what's going on inside? Pretty meta stuff.

• No blank top-levels.
• Instead, characters are to respond to the proposed question: can you handle your emotions? / are you in touch with your feelings?
• Get deep. Look within. Hear, think feel... or don't.

[ Renji's expression can truly be an ever-changing canvas of emotion. From looking somewhat dejected to breaking into a short grin, pulled along at the pace Kiyoaki set as if he were on a leash. ]

Yeah, yeah.

[ It almost sounds like a laugh, short and hearty. And at that, Renji claps one friendly smack on Kiyoaki's back. ]

See, ain't that growth?

( It's a scowl because it would be a pout, if Kiyoaki wasn't too proud for pouting. He shrugs his shoulder, faux-irritated, at Abarai's clap on his back. Like he need those kinds of reassurances, tch. )

You better follow my example.

[ Unfortunately for Kiyoaki, the reassurances will continue until morale improves. ]

Yessir, Matsugae, sir.

[ Renji gives a mock bow at that, the kind of casual bend that would have gotten his ass whooped in the academy. ]

( A small, slow smile, sharp and heavier at one corner of his mouth than the other, takes over Kiyoaki's features and he raises his chin slightly. )

Just don't be as careless with your feelings, all right? Or they'll come to bite you.

( Does he speak from experience? ... Well. )

[ Renji snorts at that, the bleak utterance of a man who had learned this lesson many times over. Temper is a difficult thing to handle with care, and Renji hasn't learned the trick of it yet. ]

Now who's making high demands, huh?

[ He makes an expansive shrug, taking the words to heart the way a dog takes a pill. Appearing to swallow it and then spitting it out. ]

Don't you worry 'bout me, I bite back just as hard.

( Kiyoaki makes a slight gesture of one hand. It's an address almost as much as the way he says the other man's name, bridging but keeping at bay at the same time. )

Abarai. ( It's said insistently, then fading into a semi-amused huff. ) No, nothing. Don't choke.

[ Renji's tone is light and unserious, carrying them past that too earnest moment to spare them both. Call it a strategic smoke screen. ]

But I haven't yet. So that counts for somethin'.

( Although the words are harsh, Kiyoaki's tone is almost fond, though he tries to hide it behind his own nonchalance. )

You're too sure of yourself.

( Though, with this emotional thing? He's getting a feeling neither of them is particular certain of anything. )
