listen to your heart 😌

"Can You Handle Your Emotions?"
Emotions are... eh. We all have them, whether we want to or not. Some people have control over their emotions, and some people let their emotions control them. Where does your character fall on this spectrum? More importantly, what's their relationship with their emotions like? Do they bury everything deep, deep down inside, or are they the first one to cry over a sappy movie? Do they even know how they feel about what's going on inside? Pretty meta stuff.
  • No blank top-levels.
  • Instead, characters are to respond to the proposed question: can you handle your emotions? / are you in touch with your feelings?
  • Get deep. Look within. Hear, think feel... or don't.

I'm an elite athlete at the top of my game. Of course I can handle my emotions. You bring those into a game with you and you've given your opponent an immediate advantage [ which is to say: he's had years of practice at repression and denial, so-- ]

Can I ask which sport you play?

Hockey. I'm the Captain of the Montreal Metros.

[ it's their year, he can feel it. And he can talk about it--talking about hockey has always been as easy as breathing. It's the rest of it that's hard ]

Are you a sports fan?

[ Now hold on. She’s not the most proficient in sports but she knows every time she hears about a hockey match, it’s because someone’s gotten into a fight on ice. That seems like the last sport to talk about guarded emotions. ]

Kind of. I’ve watched a few games while interviewing for class, and they’re fascinating to watch. I’m just not very athletic myself.

Captain’s a lot of responsibility though. I can see why you’d want to stay calm and collected.

That's generally accurate of any adversarial profession. Any time you let it show, you're opening yourself up for disaster.

Exactly. [ Easier to push things down. Keep from showing them. Besides - people are always watching and he has expectations to fulfill. People that look like him. People that look up to him. Brands that expect him--

--there's just not a lot of room for emotion in all of that ]
Doubly so for someone in the spotlight.

There's also the added pressure of having people count on you in a team setting, whether that's athletics or in an occupation where you need to be at your best. There's not a lot of time for wayward emotions when you have to carry others on your back.
