Life is hard. You can go through rough patches and over bumps, and sometimes it feels as though you're definitely worse for the wear, both physically and mentally. It's nice to have someone - someone more than a friend - there for you in those times...even if you don't think you want them or deserve them. But they're here, and they'll take care of you.

How to Play:
* This is a shipping meme for more tender, soft moments, but a little more serious than your usual "fluff." It's for people who've been broken down by their experience and those who wish to heal them.
* Comment with your character/your preferences. You may also want to specify whether your character will be the one "cared for" or the one doing the "caring" + pertinent information, but for most effectiveness, it's best to be open to both.
* Comment around.

[ It's rare that Soubi sleeps at night. Afternoon naps are more suited to him. He'll collapse into bed after he returns from class at four o'clock, and sleep until his phone rings, or until Kio barges in with beer, or until his dreams trouble him so much that he wakes with the urge to paint itching in his fingers. If he isn't bothered at all, he'll wake around midnight, and paint until sunrise.

Sumeragi Subaru, too, keeps an unconventional schedule. That isn't their only similarity.

Soubi doesn't typically enjoy being around other people. He finds them noisy and tedious and shallow, and anyone who is not a part of his world simply doesn't matter. But Subaru is neither noisy nor tedious, and this makes him not only the perfect neighbor, but a perfect companion when Soubi can't stand being alone anymore, but couldn't possibly stomach the expectations that any other person would have. Soubi doesn't do friendships--and neither, it seems, does Subaru.

They've been neighbors since Soubi moved from the suburbs into the inner city at Seimei's behest about six months ago. He'd had to leave his old apartment behind (requiring several unpleasant phone calls to Ritsu), and even transfer schools. As a result, he doesn't see Kio as much, though Kio does still show up from time to time, obstinate as ever, despite the fact that Soubi has told him under no uncertain terms to stay away, that Seimei doesn't want him to have any possible links to Ritsuka anymore. And nothing, nothing hurts as much as that does. He hasn't seen Ritsuka in nearly a year. He's almost fourteen now, in middle school. Has he grown up well? Does his heart hurt as terribly as Soubi's does when he thinks of him?

The only person that he sees or talks to at length other than Seimei--who arrives at his door semi-frequently with a cold smile and a new task (Come, Soubi, don't make me wait, we have things to do. ) or calls to relay his orders--is Subaru. There is a loneliness about him that Soubi recognizes, and though he doesn't know everything, he knows enough to realize that Subaru understands him much more than most.

It's a little past one in the morning, and Soubi woke half an hour ago, but has done little other than lay in bed and stare up at the ceiling and tell himself, again, that a good Fighter does not question his master's orders, does not even think of disobeying them, however much he might want to. Yet still, he thinks about it--though he will never actually follow through. Seimei's word, after all, is absolute.

He gets up, finally, to smoke. The summer night is hot, and that heat washes over him the moment he slides open the door to his balcony. He leans against the railing as he lights up, and glances to the left as he inhales deeply. Someone else has apparently had a very similar idea; Subaru is on the balcony beside his, doing much the same thing. This isn't an infrequent occurrence, and Soubi is glad for it, especially tonight, when he doesn't think he could stand going back to his empty room, or face a blank canvas. ]

I made korokke earlier. [ Soubi doesn't really do the whole 'hello, how are you' thing. ] Would you like some?

[Bofur stays home this time when Legolas goes out. He wants to work for a while, carve a bit more and work on a more ~secret~ project for the elf. He loses track of time in his work, and by the time he looks up, the sun has gone down and Legolas has still not returned. Frowning, he stows his work away where Legolas won't see it, wandering out in the main hall by the gate to ask if the prince has returned yet. The answer is in the negative.]

Backing off was not Jim Kirk's style. It wasn't Jane's, either, and he knew that, and that was part of why he could make this decision. With another lover, he might have pressed the point, knowing that they wouldn't come to him. But with her, so in tune with himself, he knew.

If she needed him, wanted him, she would say so. Because it was what he would do. It was why he loved her, and why they had the problems they did. They were alike. They were the same. Literally. While the differences made her intriguing and attractive, it was that sameness that led him to believe she needed space.

And that she would seek him out when she didn't.

Em could have sworn that Xavier's trail had lead here. But instead all she'd found was a story that the town had told for hundreds of years and a vamp nest.]

Well one more story they don't have to fear anymore...

[There were bones - bodies, people they'd taken for food. And a few live people that had run off when she'd come in guns blazing. Just her alone. She needed to find Xavier... but first something else. There was another guy there, one who hadn't gotten up. He needed to be seen to. And he didn't seem like a local. The others would have taken them with them if he was.

Hey. You okay? [She moves her hand to his face and starts checking his eyes.] Come on, it's time to go.

[the trip to kyoto felt longer than it should have; however, that was certainly aided by the constant glares rin felt from behind him on the train. he smiled it off, laughed it off, but honestly? when izumo had sat in the same row and had said what she had--he felt accepted for once.

she really was a nice girl when she wanted to be.

the problem was that despite that... now he was alone at night, he just couldn't sleep. the nagging feeling that no one wanted him there, that he should be alone and isolated from everyone for being too 'dangerous' was building up until he was in a cold sweat.

it hurt.

it's why, when everyone is asleep, he sneaks outside of the ryokan until he can sit on the ledge behind one of the paper slide doors. it's a hot night, and all is quiet save for the buzz of insects in the garden. in the quiet he balls his hands into fists and presses them against his legs. he stares at them for a long moment, then there's a loud bang as he slams his fist into the floor in frustration.]

[His vision is clouded in blood. It's everywhere, on his face, on his hands, streaked along the walls, puddling on the floor. Everywhere he looks it's red. He feels the blood from his wounded eye slipping between his fingers and down his hand, warm and sticky. His throat is hoarse and scratchy from screaming but he keeps muttering under his breath.

I'm not doing this, Father. This isn't me. Please. It's not my fault.

He stumbles, shoulder connecting hard with the wall. It takes all he has not to slide down the wall and stop moving. He's in so much pain. But then he hears screaming from down the hall. Screaming. A sign of life. Someone is left. He pushes off the wall with the rest of his strength and runs down the hall and...

Blood. The corpses of his step mother and half brother are splayed out on the floor. His eye catches on the figure standing in the middle of the room. The darkness shadows his face until he turns and Worick sees...himself. You wanted this.

[Now that Mako knows Asami is on her way, he thinks inviting her over to his apartment was a bad idea. So is the dinner table with the candles and the flowers, handpicked because he doesn't like the idea of paying for them, and he almost loses track of the dinner cooking on the stove because of it. Absence of thought led him to think that he was just trying to create the kind of atmosphere an upperclass woman like Asami is used to in his comparatively mediocre apartment, but as he stares at the setup he begins to realize that isn't the case at all.

He's falling for her. For real, this time.

Mako quells the flames, and he turns the flowers into ashes over his trashcan. He dresses down into something less nice, just a ragged shirt from his hard knock days, and then he returns to the stove top to salvage the burning rice he'd forgotten in apprehension. His panic doesn't wear itself with frenzied fret; his lips are locked grim, brows furrowed, movements stiff.

He and Asami have been broken up for eight years, and friendship and camaraderie has worked fine for them. Besides, it should take him more than three and a half years to get over someone like Korra. Even though Asami's company has helped hasten the healing of his wounds, he can't imagine reopening the ones they used to share together. That part of them needs to remain left alone.

Dinner isn't ready yet, but he expects Asami to show up at any minute. By now miniature flames have exhaled his want and caring, and his walls are fortified.

[ 'Given that my views on impossibility and physical reality are so commonly challenged and abused, it's surprising that the occasional nightmare seems to be the worst psychological damage I've yet to suffer. Stranger still is that the subject of these nightmares is actually a surprisingly mundane fear, all things considered. Now that anything is possible, it wouldn't be so illogical to dream of giant spiders, or the monster under your bed - that Slenderman myth even starts to feel a bit more feasible.

I would take any of those over the nightmare I seem to have most often. No, rather, I would take all of those at the same time.

The monster of my dreams is so much worse, because I've faced her. I've been hunted by her. I was brought to death's doorstep by her, and if I hadn't been saved both times I wouldn't even be here right now. I don't need some legend to keep me up at night. Just knowing that it's never impossible to see her again gives me all the torment I need.' ]

[ It isn't the first time he's dreamed of that saccharine smile and that bloodied knife, and it wouldn't be the last - but tonight's is certainly the worst so far. Every time he closes his eyes he can see the gleam of blood-soaked metal, hear her mirthful laughter as she closes in, and feel an echo of pain from a wound he technically never had.

It's too much, tonight, and he finds himself getting dressed in the middle of the night to wander his way to the local park. Maybe some fresh air will do him some good.

Usually this happened the other way around; Kagerou would make sure they had oil, would somehow have found enough wax for the both of them, would be the one taking care of Shadowmaru.

Well, Shadowmaru was going to turn things around and take care of Kagerou for once. He had the oil and the wax, so now he just needed the other mech to show up.
