[It's possible that if Ishida were more cynical in regards to Ami, her phrasing might give him pause. However...]

I'm very lucky that you did. Or should I say that I'm very grateful?

[... he's a teenage boy in love. How could he not be blind?]

[She tossed her head, almost, almost flirtatious.]

Maybe both. [Shameless of her, really. But she's always been demanding of those little affectionate tributes.]

Both, then. I'm lucky and grateful to you.

[Maybe it's that he can sympathize with her pride. Maybe it's that he can sympathize with her need for approval, given her absence of a father figure and his exceedingly troubled relationship with his own. Maybe it's just that he's a boy in love, happy to tell his girlfriend what she wants him to say. Maybe it's a little of all of the above, or maybe it's just that he thinks it's true, that he is lucky; certainly, he's grateful to have Ami in his life.]

[Maybe it's not hard to say things to soothe that insecurity. All she really wants is to hear he loves her, and if he does, that shouldn't be hard at all.. right? What worries her is when the day comes that it won't be true anymore. What then?

For now, she's content to let these little attentions make her relax. She smiles up at Ishida in a way that clearly says he's come up with the right answer.]

I'm glad you realize it.

[If he couldn't see it, how could he even begin to be worthy of her?]

[And if that's what she wants to hear, well, who is he to deny her? Especially when it's true.]

[Being loved is the most important thing. It's what's driven the best, and the worst, things she's ever done in her life.

It takes a moment before she makes any return of the gesture; not because she doesn't want to be with him, but because she's just not good at knowing what to say, what to do.]

[It's alright. Just as he understands her pride, he understands she struggles with expression how she may feel-- or even sorting out how she may feel. It's not like he's that much better about it himself, all told.]

I haven't any plans to go elsewhere, unless you say I do. [Then again, things don't always go according to plan... but for the moment, he's all Ami's, and seems quite happy to be that way.]

In that case...

Planning on dinner?

If you're asking me if I'll cook for you, the answer is yes. [Which is one way of interpreting what she said, though if she has other things in mind, he's certainly open to that.]

[Details. The important part was she wasn't letting him go anywhere.]

That sounds fine. [As if it wasn't entirely her idea to start with.]

Is there anything in particular you're in the mood for? [Aside from keeping him away from all other people.]

[Always that. Always. ~~Because if he doesn't stay away from other people, he will decide they're better than her, and she can't have that.~~

But she has another request, too, after seeming to think about it for a moment.]

Soup. I'd like some kind of soup tonight. [And a side order of romantic attention and affection.]

[He pauses thoughtfully.]

Would stew qualify? It's a family recipe.

[Which is... surprising, given the only family Ishida has left alive he's on awful terms with. Maybe someone who passed away...?]

[That is surprising, and Ami gives Ishida a quick look.]

Is that really alright?

Well, so long as you don't object and we have the ingredients... ['We'. It slips out so easily. Not 'you', but 'we'.] I don't see why it wouldn't be alright. Do you?

[We. It's a word she doesn't use often. It's a word she doesn't trust. It's a word she wants to hear anyway. It softens her.]

I'd like that. [Unfortunately, it comes with the tiny, guilty thought that she should explain just what's really on her mind. Tell him bluntly not to talk to other girls.

No. That would ruin things.]

We [She tries the word] should have everything.

[He smiles at that. He hasn't even specified what kind of stew it is. But he doesn't point that out. If it turns out they don't, well. They'll deal with that if and when it becomes an issue. They can go to the store, or he can cook something else. For now, he lingers a moment longer, his forehead against hers, his nose brushing lightly against hers.]

[It's for the best that he's oblivious to what she's thinking. Not that he would get upset, but he wouldn't understand. He would, of course, try to compromise, but in the end, being at a co-ed high school, the president of the student council and the handicrafts club... it just doesn't make any sense for him to not have any contact whatsoever with females. Especially once one factors in the teachers.]

[Reluctantly, he starts to pull away, though a hand finds hers, long fingers slipping between hers and giving her hand a squeeze before he makes his way, hand in hand with her, to the kitchen.]

[She doesn't let go. She's come to be used to Ishida's ways, the little touches and marks of affection.

The kitchen turns out, as promised, to have pretty much anything she might reasonably keep on hand. Only special ingredients for the stew might still be missing. A whim takes her to do some of it herself, mostly for an excuse to hang out in the kitchen once they get there without the awkwardness of standing there with nothing to do.]

I'll help if you want.

I'd like that. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to teach you. Sensei [He means Sokken, of course] made it for me when I visited him, or when I was ill. [It certainly explains why he's so careful, so deliberate in how he cooks. Not that he isn't normally, but there's... something more than his usual critical, scientific way of cooking dishes. This isn't just precision, for once, isn't just following the recipe to the letter. For this dish, and this dish alone... he puts some of his own feelings into the act of cooking.]

I'm afraid, though, that I've never quite made it as well as he did. Though I suppose it's possible that's just a filter of nostalgia.

[It sounds important to him. And for once, that makes Ami pay attention. The explanation makes her want to learn it even more.]

Let me see, then. What do you need, first?

Well, normally I start with making an incision on the skin of the mackerel like this. [He uses one of the slices as an example, carefully criss-crossing the slice of mackerel, leaving a diamond pattern on the skin. It's easier to show than to describe, after all. Though some simpler patterns are more common, just a simple 'x' over the center, Sokken always used this pattern, and so does Ishida.]

[It's simple enough, and Ami gives a brief nod. She takes another slice, and a separate knife, and duplicates the feat with neat, precise incisions.]

Do you season the mackerel?

After a fashion. Next, we prepare the stew. It's better if the ginger is freshly sliced. Aside from that, we'll be mixing the sake and fish stock with a little soy sauce and a little sugar in a saucepan. The miso is added to the stew last - I found out the hard way that it burns easily, [he admits a little ruefully as he assembles the ingredients, taking a moment to slice some ginger once the saucepan is on the stove.] Once they've mixed, we'll bring them to a boil.

[It was a tribute to Ishida's ability to distract Ami that they had gotten completely distracted from the question of the other girls on the student council. Then again, that was so much less important while he was here, with only her.]

Be careful from now on. [She hands Ishida the ingredients, and takes a moment to savor the very simple pleasure of cooking with someone else instead of by herself, for herself.]
