Hurt/comfort is a fan fiction genre that involves the physical pain or emotional distress of one character, who is cared for by another character. The injury, sickness or other kind of hurt allows an exploration of the characters and their relationship.

1. INJURY. You've been injured. Broken bones or bleeding out or maybe just a tiny little papercut. The choice is yours.
2. SICKNESS. You're sick and laid up in bed, at home or in a hospital. The severity is up to you.
3. FEAR/ANXIETY. Something is happening and you're scared beyond belief.
4. LOSS OF SENSES. Sight, touch, taste, hearing, smell, etc. You've lost some important sense or ability and now you're left to deal with it.
5. DESPAIR. Nothing is good or right anymore and you can't shake the depression. Maybe that friend of yours can help though...
6. BREAKUP. You've been dumped. You need someone to comfort you, possibly by the one who dumped you.
7. MAKE UP. Fight or break up, it's time to makeup.
8. RESCUED. You've just been held captive and/or tortured for however long and finally, someone has come to the rescue.
9. BAD ROMANCE. Fight, cheated on, abused, whatever the case is, someone else can clearly see you need comfort from someone who isn't your terrible lover tonight.
10. LOSS. You've experience a loss of some kind and need help getting through it.
11. INSANITY. You're seeing things that aren't really there, hearing voices, or you're just convinced you're at your wit's end finally and you're going to crack. Maybe someone can give you a helping hand.
12. TIRED. You've had a heard life recently and you're just worn too thin to really care anymore. There's no fight left in you anymore. Can someone help change your mind?
13. ADDICTION. Drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, or any other type of addiction has got you in its grasp. First time or relapse. Will someone be able to save you?
14. INSOMNIA. You can't sleep anymore, no matter how hard you try. Maybe someone can give you company.
15. NIGHTMARES. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, you can't sleep without gruesome, horrible nightmares. Either someone is stuck in your dream with you, witnessing it or they're just waking you up, soothing you out of it.
16. BLACKMAIL. You've been caught doing something you shouldn't and you were blackmailed because of it
17. SEPARATION. You're going to be separated for awhile or were separated for a long time. Either make up for lost time or try to spend every last moment together.
18. VIOLATED. You've been violated in some way. Can include sexual overtones or not. Can someone help you through it?
19. STRANDED. You've been stranded somewhere remote, with no help of anyone finding you for awhile. Can you survive this together?
20. SINS. You're feeling the weight of your sins and guilt clearer than ever. Can someone give you absolution or lessen the ache any?
21. SECRET. It's difficult having to keep that secret of yours, be it a relationship or something you just don't want to share with anybody else. Maybe it's okay to talk about it now though...
22. ADDITION. Babies should be joyous things unless you're in a situation where you know you won't be able to care for them. Either you've adopted or found out you're pregnant.

Vegeta knew Bulma was tired - it was impossible not to notice. But he already knew he'd not be going back to sleep. Perhaps... he didn't pull away from the gentle kiss, arm slipping loosely back around her and he let himself kiss back. Only stubborn will kept him from tightening his hold painfully. That would further show his fear of loss.]

... You should go back to sleep. We'll leave later.

[ Whatever it was that had spurred him in to such bad dreams... she was starting to be able to guess. The insistence that they go away, the fact that he had been unabashedly holding her, and was allowing this sort of soft affection with no guarantee that it would go further were all dead give aways, so far as she was concerned. Bulma may be a scientist, and not a psycologist, but damn if she wasn't good at making educated guesses anyway.

She was honored, honestly, that he clearly cared about them enough to have nightmares about something happening to them, but.... Bulma also had every confidence that Vegeta would protect them, even if he might seem like he didn't care at all, or had a devil may care attitude about his family.

She pulls away from the kiss, nestling her head back on his chest, arm thrown over his mid-section haphazardly. ]

Alright.. try to get some more sleep too, okay? [ A little pause as she yawns, and then: ] We're safe, Vegeta.

[And she knew him just that well. He'd let her get close enough for that at least.

Vegeta tensed at the last comment. She knew. Of course she knew, she wasn't actually a stupid person. And perceptive. He forced that unease away as best he could and lay back, tugging Bulma back down with him. For once he wanted to keep her close.

He didn't answer for a long few minutes before muttering, not entirely sure she'd hear.]

For now.

I trust you.. [ She murmurs back, knowing that it might not mean much to him, in the long run, but she wanted him to know anyway. The others may not trust him, and may have refused to wear the same armor as him because of things he'd done in the past, or asked her what in the hell she could possibly see in him, but the man she'd found underneath the many, complicated layers that had made him up, was a more than capable father and husband. More than capable and even more than willing, at that, despite his displays and occasional attitude.

Other opinions be damned - she would trust her life to Vegeta faster than any other Z fighter short of Goku.

She nuzzles against his chest, sighing gently as she settles in for sleep. Maybe it was the tender moment, or his current vulnerability, but something she'd been thinking on for a time finally slips past her verbal filters: ]

I want to have more babies with you, Vegeta.. Before I can't anymore..

[It meant more than she might realize. More than he'd ever admit, of course. Better not to make it obvious just how attached he'd become.

Vegeta kept his arms around her for once, not pulling away or otherwise physically distancing himself from her. He couldn't, not then. He tensed slightly at that unexpected admission. More children?]

... Tell me tomorrow.

.. Okay.. I should sleep, for now.. [ She knew he probably wouldn't, not after his dreams and what not, but she could at least try to get a few more hours of sleep. She curls in next to him a little tighter, running her hand down Vegeta's side. ]

And then we can get away, tomorrow..

[No, no he wouldn't be. Vegeta knew he'd be very closely guarding her sleep, likely for the next few days. Curled close around her, arms firmly wrapped around her and holding on firmly. If he clung a little too tightly, well maybe she'd shift a little and let him know without drawing too much attention to it and make him self conscious. In the meantime he just hummed in agreement.]

[ it was a delicate game to play, trying to balance between her comfort and not making him feel as though she's drawing too much attention to what's going on. She knows, subconsciously, why he grips her a little tighter when he sleeps, sometimes - but knows better than to bring it up too often. After all, Vegeta wasn't really known for being well in touch with his emotions or even his connections to her and their son - it didn't sit well with him when she made a point to say that they were fine, and healthy, and she had every confidence he was going to take care of them.

... Hell, she did't even want to think about there being a day when he couldn't.

So she lets herself drift in to sleep without comment instead, holding him gently in return. ]
