just yet. ]
If that were true, then you wouldn't have asked me to come with you. If we're being honest, I think it's because you're not really comfortable with the whole sneaking out bit yet. Need someone who knows the ropes to show you the way.
[ a shrug, and he's heading around the corner, stepping off a ledge just as the staircase moves to meet his foot. comfortable really doesn't even begin to describe how james feels when it comes to this castle, and it's even more obvious now that there aren't people to force his paths. he waves to a painting of a group of women, some dinner party scene he's sure, and looks back over to lily when they erupt into giggles and whispers. ]
He hasn't caught me for- actually, no, there was one time in second year that he did catch me. Saddled me with detention for a month, cleaning up rat dung. [ he shivers at the memory, even if he sounds just the tiniest bit fond. ] But it's fact, you know. He might work here, but I know the castle much better. Know him better. He's down at the dungeons, and then he'll move out down the main hall. Up this staircase, and then down the hall for the Ravenclaw dorm. [ james leans in a little closer to her, looking around at the paintings around them as his voice drops down into a whisper. ] He fancies the paintings down that hall more, only reason he walks down there.

[She's going to ignore the idea of her not being comfortable sneaking out. Mostly because it was true, and she didn't want to give him the satisfaction of being right. That just wasn't an option. Sorry, James.
She keeps up with him, but as they approach the staircase she slows, noticing it wasn't there. James, apparently has no such luck and before she can help herself:] James! [She shrieks, reaching a hand out to grab on to the back of his robes. But oh, hey staircase. Hastily, she lets go of him and tries to pretend that whole thing didn't happen at all. Save some face. Or something.
God damn it.
Let's just walk down the stairs and gossip about Filch and--] You're joking.

[ which, honestly, is a load of bologne. sirius and remus and peter will know about this as soon as he gets back to their room, but it's a matter of what they know and what they hear and how james decides to stretch the truth with them. a snog behind that statue on the first floor? well, only if it doesn't actually happen.
he doesn't expect her to reach out and grab him, and her shriek makes him jump, makes him think she's somehow in trouble or that she followed or missed the step and his heart is beating at a hundred miles a minute for all of two seconds before he realizes what really happened. he gives her a look, one of those double-raised-eyebrows did that really just happen sorts of things, but decides not to press his luck with it. just a knowing smile, and then back to filtch. ]
I swear. He sneaks off over there when he thinks everyone's asleep. The other portraits over there are early risers, so they're usually asleep by now. [ they've got a few more flights left to go and james rolls a few ideas over in his head while they descend, eventually deciding when they reach the next landing to try it out. he steps up onto the railing, where another staircase will soon be, and he turns back to her. ]
You trust me, don't you Evans?
[ and if lily doesn't recognize that mastermind sort of glint in his eyes, then she doesn't know anything about him. ]
What year are they in, anyway? IMPORTANT THINGS TO ESTABLISH.
And yes, yes it did happen, but if she's not saying anything, he's not saying anything, and she will just keep right on not saying anything. At all.
Instead, she grimaces, her nose wrinkling up.] Please tell me you're not suggesting what I think you are, James Potter. Because that is absolutely disgusting.
[She follows him still, trying to decipher her own feelings on the evening, as to if she's enjoying his company, or if she wants to push him off the roof of the Astronomy tower. Right now, she's hovering somewhere in the middle when--] Get down from there right now. [No, no she did not trust him. She certainly did not trust him with that gleam in his eyes, and with her mouth set into a line, she had no trouble telling him this.]
Why would you ever think I trust you? I know that look in your eyes and get down from there right now.
OH GEEZ I was assuming 6th? BUT I'M UP FOR EARLIER/LATER
[ you forget, lily. he might only have three close friends, but he's popular enough. charismatic, one could say. quick to draw a crowd. there are so many people he could possibly tell. but he won't, he already gave his word. ]
I'm just stating the facts, Lily Evans. You can interpret at will.
[ she still following him so he counts it as a win. a good win, a win-win even. especially when she tries to go all prefect and important on him and get him to step down. instead, it's just grins. all grins. he's doing that a lot, isn't he? maybe it's the effect she has on him. ]
Okay, poor choice of words. How about this - now that you've already taken the first step by sneaking out after hours, how about I show you something amazing. How about that? [ there's a quick glance over his shoulder, where he checks on a few things as he holds out his hand. ] Window of opportunity is closing...
WORKS FOR ME!
Oh just shut up, stop smirking and existing and being a jerk.
Seriously.
Right now.
But there's something about his words, and maybe it's the fact that this is, oddly, a once-in-a-life-time opportunity. And if she gets hurt, she can always blame him. Glancing down the hall, she looks at his hand, then back at him, before reaching out to take it, and stepping up on to the railing with him.] I swear, Potter, if this is a stupid idea of yours to get me to snog you, I will kill you.
OKAY GOOD C:
and there we go. she takes his hand and he pulls her up to stand on the railing next to him, holding back and even bigger grin because he knew it would work. he did. ]
This idea? Not so much. But hold judgement off when it comes for later, yeah? [ and he could very well pull her in and snog her in this very moment but he won't. instead, he'll just take solace in how close they're standing, and how he plans on this to work. ] Right, well, now that you trust me...follow. [ it's a glance back, and then he's sitting on what looks like air. and for a moment, it is air, and he's just pulling lily back with her hand still in his and they're falling.
for all of two seconds, maybe, until his behind ends up sliding right along the railing of another staircase. he pulls her right along, too, so that she ends up sitting right next to him, behind him, and without asking he just slides his arm around her lower back and holds her close as they slide down the next flight of stairs. ]
no subject
I never said I-- And she doesn't get to finish it, because he moves.
Lily gasps, but the next thing she knows, she's with him and they're falling and oh god they're going to die, death by James Potter's Stupidity, it was always bound to happen and-- wait. Wait what are-- she glances over to see the paintings whiz by as they slide, only vaguely aware of just how close James had gotten-- and he was going to get yelled at for it, later, when she realized-- and instead of a scream, she laughs, her frown spreading across her face in a smile. Oh my god, she was sliding down a Hogwarts staircase. And it was fun!
no subject
he really hopes this trick works because the last time he tried it he and sirius were in the infirmary for a week. so he taps the side of the staircase, and maybe holds lily a little closer, and he's laughing along with her just like before and hoping and hoping that the staircase moves to connect them to the next landing down...
not that he doesn't have a back-up plan, of course. he always has a plan b. this plan would just be much more fun. and less...possibly harmful to the two of them.
annndddd...nope. turns out james' luck isn't as on tonight as he would like, which means that they make it to the next landing but instead of that seamless transfer to the next set of stairs, lily and james go tumbling off the railing and sliding across the floor. but james is a gentleman, which means he maneuvers the two of them so that lily's more on top of him than anything, so when they fall and slide it's mostly james falling and sliding and lily's just kind of along for the ride. ]
no subject
Lily's oblivious to James' wand tapping or anything, but rather simply enjoying the ride, laughing, the wind in her hair. She'd hated flying-- of course, gung ho!Lily Evans in her first year had been overly eager to get on a broom and learn to fly, but that really only lasted until she couldn't stop her broom when it was heading towards the castle wall, and she had no choice but to roll off and hope the ground was soft (it wasn't). That had been enough to keep her off a broom for the rest of her life, even with That Former Friend Of Hers trying to assure her it wasn't all that bad, and she had almost had the hang of it.
But sliding down a stair case was... So completely different. It was almost like running in the halls of your school as a child, because you weren't allowed to, so when you did it you felt you went extra fast, and there was that rush of 'Oh I'm doing the thing!'. And well, here you have it.
Also, James: back-up plans. Make them.
Because when the railing ended her laughter turned to another shriek and oh, hey they're skidding to a stop and Lily is very much on top of James Potter and they're in their pajamas and he has a smudge on his glasses. Right.
Time to get off.
Get off of him.
She rolls off quickly, dusting off her knees.] That was-- [You are so smooth, Lily. So smooth.] Wow.
no subject
and he should have kissed her. but she moves damn fast, he realizes, and soon enough she's rolled right off of him and gone to stand up and james just kind of lays there staring up at the ceiling. at the other moving staircases and the portraits and main spine of the castle. just long enough to breath, laugh a little, before sitting up on his elbow to look at her. ]
Not bad, eh? [ hopefully she's not watching him too closely, because he's going to be a bit of a worrier for half a second and look her over, make sure she's not hurt or he didn't rip or tear anything. just in case. ] Lot faster, too, that's for sure. [ his eyes move back to her face, and he's just smiling. ]
no subject
She shakes her head.] No, to my surprise, not bad at all. [He's smiling, but there's something honestly different about it. It's not the vague, creepyish smile, it's a genuine, warm one. He's glad, she decides, that he shared this with her.] Very much faster.
[She shrugs, her hands behind her back.] So, uhm. Yeah. That was... That was fun. [Yeah, that's right, Lily Evans had fun. With James Potter. Alert the Daily Prophet.]
no subject
or at least until he gets another chance. which, if things go accordingly, might be sooner than she thinks. he waits for a moment just to watch her - which he's finding himself doing a lot more often recently - before he shakes his head to shake himself out of it and he's standing back up again.
so it's up and it's a moment to dust off his trousers and then it's back to work, right? ] Fun? That was brilliant, Evans. But that's okay, I know this whole sneaking out bit is new for you. We'll just have to keep easing into it. [ fun. with him. oh he's going to take a mental picture of this to keep with him for the rest of his life, and then it's just a quick flashy smirk before he's starting back off down the hallway. just one more flight and then sneaking around the bottom floor to do, but james wants to be careful. doesn't want to jinx their night. yet. ]
Coming?
no subject
[Would she do it with him again? Quite possibly, if the right situation arose. She can't stand him, but he at least keeps her on her toes.
Oh and then he's off and throwing her invitation back at her, and she has to stamp her foot once before starting off after him.] Oh shut up, don't throw that back at me, Potter. But yes, I'm coming, given I'm the only reason you're on this quest.
no subject
I wouldn't say only reason. There's a distinct possibility I could be on this very same adventure just because I was bored. But that'd just be awkward, wouldn't it? To meet out here in the halls? You'd probably drop your cocoa.
[ and waste a perfectly good cocoa, how dare you lily. ]
no subject
[She won't admit it, but James is very correct. At least about dropping cocoa.] But you weren't, is the thing, Potter.
no subject
Truth is, you need me here. And I'm doing you a favor by coming along.
no subject
I don't need you. Don't flatter yourself.
no subject
[ because really, lily, he is here. with you. he can't be too off about life. ]
Should I leave, then? If you don't need me and all. [ and they've hit the bottom floor. so close to those kitchens! ]
no subject
[Oh, she wants to tell him to leave. But she can't. And that's the problem. Because he's forced her into this position and she hates him for it.] No. You can stay. You're just-- you're impossible, Potter.
no subject
[ yup, and that's kind of what james is depending on at this point. but they won't be out for too much longer, seeing as they're rounding the corner to the kitchens now.
he shrugs a little, still looking quite smug with himself. ]
You've called me worse.
no subject
[She gives him a pointed look.] I'm not really in the business of calling people terrible names.
no subject
No, but you make an exception for me. [ annndddd have a grin just to top that off, why don't you. ]
