Hurt/comfort is a fan fiction genre that involves the physical pain or emotional distress of one character, who is cared for by another character. The injury, sickness or other kind of hurt allows an exploration of the characters and their relationship.

1. INJURY. You've been injured. Broken bones or bleeding out or maybe just a tiny little papercut. The choice is yours.
2. SICKNESS. You're sick and laid up in bed, at home or in a hospital. The severity is up to you.
3. FEAR/ANXIETY. Something is happening and you're scared beyond belief.
4. LOSS OF SENSES. Sight, touch, taste, hearing, smell, etc. You've lost some important sense or ability and now you're left to deal with it.
5. DESPAIR. Nothing is good or right anymore and you can't shake the depression. Maybe that friend of yours can help though...
6. BREAKUP. You've been dumped. You need someone to comfort you, possibly by the one who dumped you.
7. MAKE UP. Fight or break up, it's time to makeup.
8. RESCUED. You've just been held captive and/or tortured for however long and finally, someone has come to the rescue.
9. BAD ROMANCE. Fight, cheated on, abused, whatever the case is, someone else can clearly see you need comfort from someone who isn't your terrible lover tonight.
10. LOSS. You've experience a loss of some kind and need help getting through it.
11. INSANITY. You're seeing things that aren't really there, hearing voices, or you're just convinced you're at your wit's end finally and you're going to crack. Maybe someone can give you a helping hand.
12. TIRED. You've had a heard life recently and you're just worn too thin to really care anymore. There's no fight left in you anymore. Can someone help change your mind?
13. ADDICTION. Drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, or any other type of addiction has got you in its grasp. First time or relapse. Will someone be able to save you?
14. INSOMNIA. You can't sleep anymore, no matter how hard you try. Maybe someone can give you company.
15. NIGHTMARES. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, you can't sleep without gruesome, horrible nightmares. Either someone is stuck in your dream with you, witnessing it or they're just waking you up, soothing you out of it.
16. BLACKMAIL. You've been caught doing something you shouldn't and you were blackmailed because of it
17. SEPARATION. You're going to be separated for awhile or were separated for a long time. Either make up for lost time or try to spend every last moment together.
18. VIOLATED. You've been violated in some way. Can include sexual overtones or not. Can someone help you through it?
19. STRANDED. You've been stranded somewhere remote, with no help of anyone finding you for awhile. Can you survive this together?
20. SINS. You're feeling the weight of your sins and guilt clearer than ever. Can someone give you absolution or lessen the ache any?
21. SECRET. It's difficult having to keep that secret of yours, be it a relationship or something you just don't want to share with anybody else. Maybe it's okay to talk about it now though...
22. ADDITION. Babies should be joyous things unless you're in a situation where you know you won't be able to care for them. Either you've adopted or found out you're pregnant.

After all the time I put in, do you seriously think I'd move along to someone else?

[It's enough that he knows, regardless of what he is or isn't ready for. Their lives get complicated and she'd like to think the people she cares about understand that they matter to her.

Say it before it's too late, that's a hard lesson to learn.]

Oh, so that's what this is? I understand now.

[ And with that he was closing his eyes, rolling to lie on his back once more, apparently content to just go back to sleep with that sort of insinuation. All in jest, of course. ]

[She pushes up with a laugh, rolling close until she can press her lips to his chest.]

That's probably what I should tell the rest of the town. Clocked in too many hours and now I'm stuck with him.

[ An arm lowers around her shoulders as she draws in closer, the corners of his lips crooking upwards despite himself. ]

You just can't be bothered to get rid of me now. Too much effort to find someone else.

I don't know that there's anyone else like you.

[There's only one Mad Hatter. He may hate the nickname, but it proves her point.]

I think David and Mary Margaret are worried. I haven't said a lot of four-letter words after your name lately.

Don't they usually come before my name, anyway?

[ Still, he can picture their worry. Of all the people in Storybrooke she could have become involved with, she picks the neurotic shut-in widower. Yes, the Mad Hatter, as much as he hates that name.

If it were his daughter, he'd worry too. ]

[She actually pauses to think about this, going over it in her head for a few moments before she shrugs.]

After, when I'm complaining. Before when I'm telling a story.

[Hey, Henry approves of the neurotic shut-in widower.]

[ Henry, you are an alright kid, sometimes. ]

And what stories have you had to tell them lately? Or should I even ask?

Nothing much. I haven't been mad at you or anything like that.

[The opposite of that, actually. She doesn't really want to tell him...]

...I told them about your memories.

[ That steals the smile from his face. In fact, he looks faintly worried. ]

...how much?

Um....

[They were doing so well. she frowns when she realizes she just ruined it.]

All of it?

[ It's still nothing he likes to talk about. With anyone. If they were going to find out, maybe it was best that she was the one to tell them...even if that involves them more in his life than he might have been ready for. ]

...what did they say?

Not a lot.

[And she had omitted anything he would've been especially embarrassed about. They needed to know that Regina was capable of these things in case she tried anything on Emma, and besides, what did it hurt for them to know that she'd been dealing with something that they could probably relate to.]

Just that they were glad it worked out. It wasn't - they're not looking for reasons not to like you.

It's not as though they'd have very far to look.

[ If she was concerned that he was angry with her for having shared, the thought ought to be put to rest when he turns his head, resting it atop hers as his hold tightens ever so slightly. In the end it doesn't matter if they know or not, does it? So long as Grace doesn't hear about it...

That, he's definitely not ready for. ]

Yeah, well they also have me for a daughter. I don't think I'm what they were expecting when they heard that prophecy that their kid was someone important.

[She can't ever live up to what they thought they were getting, it's not possible. And yet this isn't so bad either, at least not when she has her son at home waiting and someone beside her who almost understands. She settles close, allowing herself to get wrapped up in that tighter embrace. If he's not mad, that's more than good enough for her.]

They keep trying to parent me and I'm more worried about my kid than being theirs.

You don't really think they're going to hold that against you, I hope.

[ He feels his lips twitch slightly. As good as they were getting sometimes, Emma still had that self-conscious streak a mile wide. Her role as the 'savior' had weighed heavily on her, especially for a woman who was used to being overlooked. He couldn't say he understood completely...

But at least he knew where to go with this. There was a thoughtful pause. ]

If you were in their place, if Henry grew up and had children of his own before you ever got to see him, if he made some bad calls in his life, would it really matter? Or would you just be grateful to have him in your life again?

You think you're smart, don't you?

[Turning it on her like that, putting her kid in the position of grown up. He's right, there's nothing Henry could tell her that would make her love him any less. She'll never judge him for his mistakes, no matter what comes their way.

It's just a little harder to be comfortable with your screw-ups when your mom is Snow White and your dad is Prince Charming. She tries not to look at them that way, but every once in a while...

Maybe that's why she isn't surprised Jefferson assumes they'll hate him. For the same reason that she knows they don't. They're just so good.]

I'd be there for Henry no matter what, but he's Henry and I'm -

[She shrugs her shoulders, giving in so that she doesn't have to get into it. They deserve better, but she knows what he'll say.]

Tired.

Well it's late. And I was the idiot who got us both up and talking, so...

[ Sometimes he wonders what it's like, having parents you want to please. Having a pedigree like that seems like more trouble than it's worth, but it only takes looking at the way Grace looks at him, or Henry at Emma, to know how much it means to have that link.

He can't give her answers, any more than she can make his nightmares disappear overnight. But maybe they don't have to fix each other's problems. It's enough to have someone there, aware of them, and staying anyway. ]

I'm entirely for trying for that whole sleeping business again.

[Tangled up together, no personal space whatsoever? Emma's comfortable enough not to put up a fight if that's what he wants. It might be a comfort to him if he starts waking up again. Although if he does, she's not far. This is one of the few things she has some real patience with.]

You could probably put a smaller bed in here, we only take up about 25% of it.

[Bigger isn't necessarily better, even if it is damn comfortable.]
