Because we've been roommates since our freshman year of college.

And I've gotten used to making sure he's okay if he ever gets drunk.

[Plus Jimmy was the first friend he made after years of keeping his distance from other people, so Clark feels he owes him that much.]

You've gotten used to it? That sounds pretty one-sided to me. What's he do for you?

He's been a good friend and roommate to me. Even with all his...eccentricities, we still get along pretty well.

And he figured out I wasn't exactly "normal" long before most other people did, but he's never judged me for it. So the least I can do for him is help him out when he needs it.

[levelshift]

[.... Ugh, he knows what it's like knowing someone who doesn't judge people for being different.]

So he's either way too kind of a bad judge of character.

[Or both, like Last Order. Dealing with people like that is so complicated, he hates it.]

Still sounds like too much effort to me.

[At least, too much effort for someone who is incredibly bad at peopleing.]

[Admittedly, Clark isn't the greatest at peopleing either, since he's got a lot of insecurities about who he is and that tends to get in the way of opening up to most people. But he's trying to get better with that.]

It does take effort, but I don't mind. I like helping people I care about.

[Of course, he does also want to help people he's not particularly close to, as well.]

That makes you sound like a kind person, too.

[Or a good person, even. The exact opposite of himself.]

I try to be, at least.

[Even when people don't believe he has no other motive for doing what he does other than wanting to help people. Or maybe it's especially because of that.]

It must get tiring.

[It seems like it would, but doing anything kind of exhausting when you're a terrible person. It's probably different for people who aren't like that.]

It can be, definitely.

[It certainly was tiring when his super-hearing first kicked in and he could hear just about anyone who was in trouble, so of course he felt compelled to do as much as he could without sleeping for a few days.]

But I'm still learning how to deal with that.

Shit, still learning? So you don't even have it figured out, that's even worse.

[No, it isn't. He's aware being a good person can't be an easy path, it's probably just nonstop work through a person's entire life to be good. The one time he did something good he nearly died for it.

But at the end of the day he knows it's still worth it, because it's better than being a terrible person like he is.]

Being a bad person is a lot easier. You don't need to put into any effort into it, you just be a monster and you're set.

[That isn't really true either, but this is the kind of thing a monster would say, so he's saying it.]

Honestly, there are a lot of things I'm still figuring out.

[Like where he comes from, how his powers work, or even how many powers he has.]

Maybe being a monster can be easier for some people, but I can't just stand by and let other people suffer. Even if I can't fix every problem out there, I still want to try and help to make things better.
