They shouldn't keep Running Into each other. Particularly not Intentionally. Particularly not when people have started to Question it, Question loyalties.

But he can't help himself. Can't not text her to meet him from time to time, ask even just to see her a few moments to hold her hand.

Maybe he doesn't get asked. Maybe it's one of the perks that comes with being a low ranking Soldier. But every time she leaves the office, she gets questioning stares that suggest to her that everyone knows where she's going.

Today, when she meets him in the back corner of a cafe, her hand doesn't immediately reach out for his. "... Declán."

And then she can't continue.

That's a Tone he's not certain he understands. That has him Pausing more than waiting for her to finish her thought, more than the lack of motion.

"...Miss?"

"... doesn't anyone... ask?" she says slowly, a hint of exhaustion on her face as she looks up at him. "When you leave to see me?"

Maybe it will be easier if he stays Standing. It makes it feel more like Work, certainly.

"...not particularly. I've got... personal time."

She breathes for a moment, then presses a hand to her forehead. "I... I don't know how to do this," she says quietly.

It looks like a Burden. That's the sort of thing that makes people make Mistakes.

"Ought we stop?"

"...could you sit down?" she asks softly, waiting for him to do so. Once he's seated across from her, she'll continue, voice barely above a whisper as she stares down at her clenched knuckles. "If... if you could easily stop... then I could-- I would have to find a way to- to do the same, and... that would be that."

He sits lightly at the edge of the chair, watching with his habitual blank expression, brow barely furrowed. "...I could if you told me to, Miss."

"... I don't want to," she admits, her shoulders slumping as she finally reaches out for his hand. "I- I like-- I... you mean... quite a lot to me," she finishes lamely.

"...then how do we... stop me being a problem for you at work?" It's Impulsive to reach across the table, shy of actually taking her hand.

"I don't... I don't know that there's an easy fix," she says, spreading her palms. "I mean, unless we can make this into- a reason for our families to be allies or something like that, I don't think there's anything that can really justify... this. Even though... even though I don't- ever want to lose this."

[piqued]

"...do they really care?" His fingers shift closer, lift briefly from the table to brush at a strand of her hair. "Aren't you... allowed some freedom in your own affairs?"

It's an optimistic gambit.

Her hand almost raises in a mirror as she smooths at his cheek, leans into his fingers. "I don't think they consider love a worthwhile distraction for me," she murmurs before pulling away from him, not quite making eye contact.

There's a bit of a Pause before he justifies to himself. She probably meant Love in the general sense, after all.

"It... isn't so far-fetched our families ought... work together."

It was, after all, Working Together that had got them caught in this situation.

"... I'll suggest it. We'll see what happens." She leans closer, presses her forehead to his, smooths her thumb over his cheek again. Quietly, regretfully, "it's been too long since we actually had time for ourselves."

"Suppose I could get myself shot again." But his head ducks slightly, lips pressing carefully to her palm in Apology even as he murmurs it.

"Please don't," she murmurs, laughing softly as she leans in impulsively to kiss the corner of his lips.

It's not so difficult to turn his head slightly, catch her lips Properly against his own for half a second. They're talking about changing the Shape of their World to be closer, after all. It Must be Appropriate.

She doesn't pause. Yes, the kiss is short, but there's nothing hesitant about it. Blythe just gasps softly as she pulls back, then asks slowly, "... can we- try that again?"

"...if you like." Not that he Wouldn't. He's absolutely already leaning in again.

This time, she answers almost hungrily, pressing closer into the kiss as both hands fly to his cheeks. Pulling back for breath is a brief movement before her lips find his again.
