We're both stubborn to a fault and arguments in the past would snowball until they were volatile, but we're a little more mature now. I still fear cornering them in a sense, though. This is not merely a fear based on their part, though -- I am as much to blame for past faults.
How do you pose talking through issues in a way that doesn't trigger a fight or flight response within someone who fears discussing aspects that aren't particularly savory to deal with? How can one lay it out so the other person will not internalize it or get immediately defensive? Is there a way to take a softer approach?
We're on better footing now, but I want to make the effort to meet him halfway in the future. I won't be listening to any advice encouraging me to leave him, that won't be happening.
